Where to buy used books in Sedbergh

Updated 16/10/2026

Sedbergh sits under the Howgill Fells inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a Cumbrian market town that has been part of Westmorland and Furness since 2023. The town's visitor site says it became England's official Book Town in 2003, after a group of residents formed the Sedbergh Literary Trust, and the NW Evening Mail repeated that date on 8 October 2026. Great British Life's history of the project, written for the twentieth anniversary in May 2025, traces the idea to the slump after the 2001 foot-and-mouth outbreak and dates the shared book centre and visitor office to May 2005. Money figures are in pounds sterling.

Seven of the twelve stops are in Sedbergh itself, and six of those are within a quarter-mile of St Andrew's Church: Westwood Books on Long Lane, the dealer shelves of Howgills Bookshop, Clutterbooks and Sleepy Elephant on Main Street, the book corner of Farfield Clothing off Joss Lane, and the People's Hall, where North West Book Fairs pitches its Sedbergh fair. Farfield Mill's pre-loved bookshop is the exception, about 1.2 miles east on the road to Hawes. The town's own site is frank about scale, writing that only a couple of shops sell books and nothing else, while many others keep shelves on the side.

The other five stops need the car. Kendal, nearly nine miles west, adds Oxfam's Highgate shop, the Lions' charity bookshop in Wainwright's Yard and a fair at Stricklandgate House; Kirkby Stephen, up the A683 to the north-east, has a new bookshop that also takes and sells pre-loved copies; and Ingleton, over in North Yorkshire to the south, gets a summer fair on the same circuit as Sedbergh's.

Secondhand and antiquarian bookshop

Westwood Books

Long Ln, Sedbergh LA10 5AH

A building at the eastern end of Main Street that had been a factory and, before that, the local cinema and village hall, opened as a bookshop at Easter 2006 by a couple who had kept a Hay-on-Wye bookshop for more than 20 years; its About page says local owners took over in June 2020. Two floors hold more than 70,000 titles, mostly secondhand with some new and antiquarian stock, and scarcer copies go into a dedicated Collector's Book Room. The NW Evening Mail gave the same stock figure on 8 October 2026 and headlined it as the biggest bookshop in the Yorkshire Dales. Westwood buys according to condition and what it already has, and would rather sellers made contact before arriving with boxes.

Multi-dealer bookshop

Howgills Bookshop

Sedbergh Information Centre, 72 Main St, Sedbergh LA10 5AD

Shelves rented by secondhand dealers inside the Information Centre, about 230 yards east of St Andrew's, with a subject list that runs from cricket, railways and outdoor pursuits to Lakes and Dales topography, local history, maps and prints. It descends from the Dales and Lakes Book Centre that opened alongside the visitor office in a former National Park office, ready for the bank holiday weekend at the start of May 2005, as Great British Life recounted in its anniversary piece. On 17 January 2026 the centre's Instagram account joked that it carries so many books some visitors take it for a library. The website gives 9am to 4pm every day while a December 2024 post said 10am to 4pm, so ring 015396 20125 before an early start.

Community charity bookshop

Clutterbooks

77 Main St, Sedbergh

The book outlet of Sedbergh's community charity shop, between the Information Centre and the church, where the town's visitor site also lists music, games, puzzles and collectables beside the books. A Daily Express travel feature of 24 February 2026 pointed readers to its shelves of secondhand books, and on 8 July 2026 the charity posted on Facebook that donations were welcome from Monday to Saturday. Takings from Clutterbooks and from Clutterbooks & Clobber, the general charity shop further along Main Street, go into a fund that makes grants to local groups; the Express listed that second shop among the town's book outlets in August 2025.

Book fair (People's Hall)

Sedbergh Book Fair

The People's Hall, Howgill Ln, Sedbergh LA10 5DQ

The People's Hall, a short walk north-west of the church, is the Sedbergh venue of North West Book Fairs, which held fairs here on Saturday 23 May and Saturday 18 July 2026. Its Facebook notice for the July date promised around twelve dealers selling secondhand, antiquarian and collectable titles alongside ephemera, a café with home-made food and a small free car park, with pay-and-display spaces on Joss Lane and at Loftus Hill as overflow. The printed programme for 2027 brings the fair back on 22 May and 10 July and puts admission at 50p to £1.

Walking gear and collectable books

Sleepy Elephant

41 Main St, Sedbergh LA10 5BL

Walking boots and outdoor kit at the front, books for walkers and collectors on the shelves: the shop's website lists new and secondhand mountaineering and climbing titles, Dales and Lake District topography, and collectable children's books from the 1960s and earlier, Richmal Crompton, Enid Blyton and Angela Brazil among them. Great British Life told would-be book town volunteers in May 2025 to call in here, and the same Express feature of February 2026 picked out its mountaineering books. Hunting one particular title? Send an email or ring ahead, the shop suggests.

Book corner in a factory shop

Farfield Clothing book corner

The Old School, Joss Ln, Sedbergh LA10 5AS

Just up the hill from the Joss Lane car park, a fleece and jacket maker whose factory shop also holds what the firm calls a small second-hand book shop, wording the Wayback Machine found unchanged on its About page in May 2026; the town's bookshop trail names it the Old School Room Bookshop. Despite the shared name, the firm stresses it has nothing to do with Farfield Mill. That February 2026 Express round-up says the shop has been known to offer paperbacks. Anyone travelling far is asked to ring 01539 620169 first.

New and pre-loved bookshop

The Book Nook

7 Waltons Yard, Market Square, Kirkby Stephen CA17 4QT

In Kirkby Stephen, about twelve and a half miles north-east by the A683, a general bookshop in the corner unit of Walton's Yard on Market Square that opened on Tuesday 9 September 2025, the Westmorland Gazette reported two days later. New titles lead, but the paper says it also stocks previously loved books and runs a part-exchange scheme, letting customers trade old books against new ones, with a small selection of records too. The shop's Facebook page was still advertising its book club on 14 October 2026.

Pre-loved bookshop (arts centre)

Farfield Mill pre-loved bookshop

Farfield Mill, Garsdale Rd, Sedbergh LA10 5LW

Out on the Garsdale road, roughly 1.2 miles to the east, a 19th-century woollen mill run as a charitable community benefit society, with artists' studios, a craft gallery, a tea room and a pre-loved bookshop up on level 4. The Mill's bookshop page says it raised over £3,000 for the building in 2019 and that donated books can be left at reception. The Express put this bookshop on its list of places to find books in the town in early 2026, and the NW Evening Mail dated the mill to 1836 in October 2026.

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Shop Kendal

46-48 Highgate, Kendal LA9 4TF

In Kendal, nearly nine miles west along the A684, Oxfam's general shop on Highgate describes itself, on its branch page, as keeping a specialist books section alongside its secondhand goods and Fair Trade products. An archived copy taken by the Wayback Machine on 8 June 2026 carries identical text and address, and the branch takes donated books and music as well. No opening hours appear on Oxfam's page for this branch, so phone 01539 735420 before making the trip.

Charity bookshop (Kendal & District Lions)

Kendal Lions Charity Bookshop

Wainwright's Yard, Kendal LA9 4DP

In Kendal, a short walk north of Oxfam, just off Stricklandgate inside the Wainwright's Yard shopping courtyard, a bookshop staffed by volunteers from Kendal & District Lions, where every book, jigsaw, CD and game on the shelves was given by local people. A news item from the courtyard's managers dated 14 January 2026 described how ten bookcases from a closing local shop prompted a rearrangement, after which specialised titles went onto tables and stands of their own. The club says it can collect donated books from anyone unable to bring them in.

Book fairs

Book fair (Stricklandgate House)

Kendal Book Fair

Stricklandgate House, 92 Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4PU

Also in Kendal, Stricklandgate House, about 360 yards north of the Oxfam shop, is the town's stop on the North West Book Fairs circuit, which describes its stock as secondhand, antiquarian, collectable and out-of-print books, maps and ephemera. The 2026 calendar ran a fair here on 5 September and has one more on Saturday 21 November, a date D B Derbyshire, one of the exhibiting dealers, also lists. For 2027 the programme gives 17 April and 12 June, and its leaflet notes that fairs generally open from 10am to 4pm.

Book fair (community centre)

Ingleton Book Fair

Ingleton Community Centre, Main St, Ingleton LA6 3HG

In Ingleton, a North Yorkshire village about 12 miles south, the community centre on Main Street is a Sunday venue for the same dealers' circuit as Sedbergh and Kendal. North West Book Fairs held a fair here on 2 August 2026, and its 2027 programme lists Sunday 8 August. The leaflet names a single contact for the Ingleton, Kendal and Sedbergh fairs, so one call covers all three.

Local sourcing tips

  • The Book Shelter on Main Street is a disused bus shelter turned into a free book swap: the town's site asks you to leave a book for any you take. Express readers were sent to it as one of the town's book stops in February 2026.
  • Death in the Dales, billed by its organisers as the third annual festival of crime writing in the book town, runs from 16 to 18 October 2026; its programme is talks and author events rather than secondhand sales.
  • Smatt's Duo on Main Street and the Cross Keys Temperance Inn at Cautley appear on the town's list of Book Cafes, selling novels, cookery, history and nature titles alongside the menu, by the town's own description.
  • North West Book Fairs also runs a fair at Clapham village hall near Ingleton, about 15 miles south-south-east, on Sunday 25 October 2026, with the next one in its 2027 programme on Sunday 17 October.
  • Left On The Shelf, at Yard 91, 87 Highgate in Kendal, buys and sells secondhand radical books, pamphlets and ephemera, but its owner opens the storeroom by arrangement only and does not run a shop.
  • In Hawes, 13 miles east, the Upper Dales Community Partnership describes a community book shop with secondhand and some new books in the Little Shop On The Hill, on the cobbles. It was announced on Facebook in November 2024 as an expansion of the book sales at the library and community office; ring 01969 667988 before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Sedbergh?

Start with the charity counters. Clutterbooks on Main Street turns donated books into grants for local groups, and the pre-loved bookshop on level 4 of Farfield Mill raises money for the mill itself. Over in Kendal, the Lions' bookshop in Wainwright's Yard sells only donated stock for club causes. The Book Shelter costs nothing if you bring a book to swap. On fair days, getting in to see the dealers at the People's Hall costs between 50p and £1, if the organiser's 2027 leaflet is a guide.

Where do I sell used books in Sedbergh?

Westwood Books buys, but wants to hear from you before you bring anything: it chooses by condition and by gaps in its stock. Up in Kirkby Stephen, the Book Nook's part-exchange scheme lets you trade books in against new ones. Clutterbooks, Farfield Mill, and in Kendal both Oxfam and the Lions, take donations rather than buying. Before you choose, take one picture of the bookcase in BiblioScan, which tags every spine it recognises with a likely resale price; the copies worth a listing on Vinted, on eBay.co.uk or with Amazon.co.uk get set aside, and the remainder can head to a dealer or into a charity bag.

Which day is best for book hunting in Sedbergh?

Saturday, ideally on a fair date. All the Sedbergh shops that list their times open on Saturday, though Sleepy Elephant and Farfield Clothing both shut at 3pm, and the North West Book Fairs dates at the People's Hall and Stricklandgate House in Kendal fall on Saturdays. Avoid Tuesday for Farfield Mill, which closes that day, and Sunday for Farfield Clothing, which lists no Sunday hours; Sleepy Elephant only opens on Sunday afternoons.

Are there any used book fairs in Sedbergh?

Yes. North West Book Fairs brought around twelve dealers to the People's Hall on Howgill Lane on 23 May and 18 July 2026, and its 2027 programme brings them back for two more Saturdays, in late May and early July. Kendal's next fair at Stricklandgate House is on 21 November 2026, Ingleton's community centre has one on 8 August 2027, and Clapham village hall hosts another on 25 October 2026. Death in the Dales, the crime-writing festival, sells tickets to talks, not secondhand stock.
