Lancaster, the county town on the River Lune in Lancashire, England, keeps its second-hand book stops in a tight knot west of the Town Hall on Dalton Square. Oxfam Books & Music trades on Penny Street, Atticus is around 150 yards away on King Street, and the Assembly Rooms Emporium, a little further up the same street, hosts Assembled Books on one of its market stalls. Prices, where quoted, are in British pounds.
Morecambe, about 3 miles to the north-west on the bay, has the busier seafront trail. The Old Pier Bookshop has filled a building on Marine Road Central since 1990, and autumn 2026 brought two newcomers a few streets back from the promenade: Lost at Sea moved off its Festival Market stall into a shop on Victoria Street in September, and The Borrowed Book opened on Pedder Street in October. Farplace Animal Rescue keeps a cheap book corner in its seafront charity shop.
North along the A6, Carnforth pairs a many-roomed bookshop on Market Street with the 3R Foundation's community charity shop. Further out, the Lune Valley village of Hornby hosts a dealers' book fair at its Institute, and Daisyroots Books trades in Grange-over-Sands, on the far shore of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria.

In Morecambe, facing the bay roughly 3.3 miles north-west of Lancaster Town Hall, this second-hand shop has had the same owner since it opened in 1990, and the Lancashire Post's July 2025 visit explained that the building, once a café and chip shop run by the owner's parents, has belonged to the family since the 1960s. The paper found narrow aisles grouped only loosely by genre, nothing in alphabetical order, and sci-fi, fantasy and crime as the busiest sections. Visit Lancaster's listing quotes the shop on a stock of more than 100,000 titles and calls it disorganised in its own words, and Beyond Radio reported the shop cheering on a fellow Morecambe bookseller in September 2026.

Just off Morecambe's promenade, some 3.3 miles from Lancaster Town Hall, a couple who had documented their plans in daily video diaries opened this preloved bookshop on Saturday 10 October 2026, Beyond Radio reported two days later. The shop's website says its shelves are filled from house clearances, private collections, community donations, charity shops and independent sellers, with every copy cleaned and checked before it goes out, and there's coffee to drink while browsing. Wednesday is the closing day on its published timetable.

26 King St, Lancaster LA1 1JY
About 315 yards west of the Town Hall, Atticus sells second-hand books with a small run of vinyl and CDs, and its profits support the Tasikoki wildlife rescue centre in Indonesia. The shop's own history traces the name back to a Liverpool bookshop of 1974, recounts a first Lancaster branch that closed in 2001 and the not-for-profit reopening in 2014, and admits the doors stayed shut for most of a year after its founder fell ill in 2024; by October 2025, it says, things were back to normal. Writers, musicians and good causes can borrow the window, the noticeboard or the floor itself, as the central shelving moves aside for talks and small gigs.

54 Penny St, Lancaster LA1 1XF
Some 165 yards along Penny Street from the Town Hall, Oxfam devotes this branch to books and recorded music, so expect records, CDs and DVDs among the shelves. When Beyond Radio reported on 15 May 2026 that Oxfam's clothing and homewares shop at 62-64 Penny Street was about to reopen after months shut, it noted that this book and music branch had stayed open. Its own page lists no fixed hours and asks shoppers to ring 01524 380478 instead.

In Carnforth, a railway town about 5.8 miles north-north-east of Lancaster, this bookshop dating from the 1970s told Lancs Live in August 2025 that it fills 14 rooms with new, second-hand and antiquarian books, runs specialist sections and puts selling in the shop ahead of online sales. Collectors travel in from Manchester and Liverpool, according to that interview. The Westmorland Gazette, on 20 October 2026, summed it up as a sprawling place across three floors and many rooms.

Where do I sell used books in Lancaster?
The Borrowed Book fills its shelves partly from private collections and independent sellers, so it's a fair place to ask, and it also takes donated books in good, clean condition if you get in touch first; the 3R Foundation in Carnforth accepts books too, turning the proceeds into community grants. Before splitting the haul, line the books up upright and photograph the shelf in one go with BiblioScan: the app sets a current resale price against each title it can identify, and the handful worth listing on Vinted, Amazon or eBay separate themselves from the giveaway box.
