Where to buy used books in Preston

Updated 01/10/2026

Preston, the Lancashire city on the Ribble, keeps much of its secondhand book trade within a ten-minute walk of the Flag Market. Halewood & Sons holds the antiquarian end of Friargate, Oxfam's bookshop stands on Market Place itself, and two furniture-led charity shops, Emmaus in the old Debenhams on Fishergate and St Catherine's Hospice on Corporation Street, slip books in among the sofas and clothes rails. Every price mentioned here is in pounds sterling.

Across the river, South Ribble adds three charity shops whose own pages or posts name books: Regenerage in Leyland and in Bamber Bridge, and Cats Protection on Liverpool Road in Penwortham. Chorley borough makes the longer day out, with dealers' book stalls inside Bygone Times, a converted mill at Eccleston, the antiques centre in the Old Corn Mill at Bretherton, a St Catherine's shop in Adlington and a Regenerage branch on the edge of Chorley town. North of the city, the village hall at Barton hosts a secondhand book fair on four Saturdays in 2026.

Older guides send book hunters to Preston Market, but both of its book stalls have gone. The Book Stop's Here stopped trading there with immediate effect after 34 years, Central Radio reported on 14 December 2025. Derek's Books had already left Preston Market in October 2025 and was due to close for good on Thursday 10 September 2026, when its owner retired, the Lancashire Post reported on 17 August 2026.

Its Facebook page said on 14 January 2026 that the centre trades 363 days a year, shutting only on 25 and 26 December, and the Cotton Cafe on site helps on a long rummage.

Local sourcing tips

  • Friargate carries a second Halewood name. The Antiquarian Booksellers' Association lists Halewoods at number 37 as a separate member specialising in travel and fine books, trading Monday to Saturday with an earlier finish on Thursdays, so check the door number if you have arranged to meet a particular dealer.
  • The car boot that used to run at Park Hall in Charnock Richard was due to reopen on a field on Long Lane, Heath Charnock (PR6 9EE), on Saturday 28 February 2026, the Lancashire Post reported on 2 February 2026, with free entry for buyers and Saturday trading planned. Check the organisers' Facebook group for the current weekends before setting off.
  • Just over the Wyre boundary near Bilsborrow (PR3 0TR), the St Michaels & Bilsborrow car boot posted weekend sales through summer 2026, among them 15 and 16 August, with buyers getting in free after a dawn start. Its posts never mention books, which makes any boxed paperbacks a matter of luck.
  • Dealer fairs come and go: the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association brought a two-day fair to Brockholes nature reserve, on the city's eastern fringe, in July 2024, but its published 2026 list has no Lancashire date at all. North West Book Fairs fills the gap, with a Sunday 11 October 2026 fair at Gorton Monastery in Manchester on the same programme as Barton.
  • Most St Catherine's branches around the city, including Leyland, Fulwood, Bamber Bridge and Chorley town centre, list clothes, bric-a-brac and household goods on their pages but no books, so keep the Ashton book shop as the hospice stop that matters for reading matter.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Preston?

Start at the charity end. Oxfam on Market Place and the St Catherine's book shop in Ashton are both given over to books, while Emmaus on Fishergate and Sue Ryder at Tulketh Mill mix them in with furniture and clothes, and the Regenerage shops in Leyland and Bamber Bridge shelve them beside the clothes racks and the toy boxes. Barton's dealers' fair asks between 50p and £1 at the door, according to the North West Book Fairs programme.

Where do I sell used books in Preston?

Halewood & Sons advertises for fine and rare books, so ringing the Friargate shop with a list is the first move for anything old or scarce. Everyday paperbacks are better given away: St Catherine's in Ashton accepts only books and jigsaws, and Oxfam on Market Place takes books, music and DVDs. For titles worth selling yourself, eBay.co.uk, Vinted and Amazon.co.uk are the usual routes; photograph the full shelf with BiblioScan beforehand and the app puts a resale figure on every spine, which shows which copies are worth the effort of a listing.

Which day is best for book hunting in Preston?

Saturday, when Halewood & Sons, the St Catherine's shops, Emmaus, Sue Ryder, the Regenerage and Cats Protection shops, Bygone Times and the Old Corn Mill are all trading, and when the Barton fair is held on 10 October 2026. On a Sunday, Emmaus opens from 11am and Sue Ryder from 10am in Preston, the South Ribble charity shops in Leyland, Bamber Bridge and Penwortham open too, and both mill antiques centres, at Eccleston and Bretherton, keep their doors open. Thursday mornings start half an hour later at the Ashton book shop.

Are there any used book fairs in Preston?

Yes, at Barton village hall on the A6 north of the city, where North West Book Fairs held dealers' fairs on 24 January, 25 April and 20 June 2026, with the last one of the year set for Saturday 10 October. The same organisers list Gorton Monastery in Manchester for the following day.
