Where to buy used books in Warrington

Updated 01/10/2026

In Warrington, the Cheshire town on the Mersey between Liverpool and Manchester, the hunting inside the borough means two Sunday car boots, at Winwick beside the motorway and at Rixton out east, where books are never advertised, and charity shops in the villages of Stockton Heath and Lymm. All the prices given are in pounds sterling.

For shops that specialise in books, head across the boundary into Cheshire East. Oxfam keeps a book-specialist branch on Princess Street in Knutsford, and volunteers keep a pre-loved book room in the Stableyard at Tatton Park, a little short of two miles to its north. Lymm, Tatton and Knutsford line up along one drive to the south-east.

Car boot sale

Warrington's Favourite Carboot Sale

Townfield Ln, Winwick, Warrington WA2 8TE

This sale is held at Winwick, opposite B&Q beside junction 9 of the M62 and 1.9 miles north-west as the crow flies; the organiser dates its first sale to 6 June 1999 and bills 2026 as its 28th year, a season its website set to resume on 15 February after the winter break that followed the last sale of 2025, on 21 December by the Warrington Guardian's account of 13 December 2025. A Facebook post from the organiser on Saturday 26 September 2026 promised the Sunday sale from 5:30am to 1pm, with parking at £2 before 10am and £1 after, straight-in pitches at £10 and no booking needed. A Wednesday session runs too, though its start is given as 6:30am on the organiser's website and as 7am, finishing at noon, in the Warrington Guardian of 28 April 2026; nothing the organiser publishes mentions books, so finding any is up to the sellers on the day.

Oxfam Bookshop

Oxfam Bookshop Knutsford

31 Princess St, Knutsford WA16 6BW

Across the boundary in Knutsford, the Cheshire East town about 10.4 miles south-east, Oxfam's Princess Street branch has specialised in books for two decades, the Knutsford Guardian reported on 12 December 2025 as it reopened after a major refurbishment. Its manager told the paper it is the town's only second-hand bookshop, and that so many books are donated each week the shelves never struggle for stock. Records have claimed a growing share of the room, with sheet music and CDs, while antiques, jewellery and homewares make up about a quarter of what is for sale. Oxfam's page for the branch gives no opening times and asks you to contact it first, on 01565 650741.

Charity bookshop (Tatton Park Charitable Trust)

Tatton Park Pre-loved Book Shop

The Stableyard, Tatton Park, Knutsford WA16 6QN

Inside Tatton Park, the Cheshire East estate about nine miles south-east on the edge of Knutsford, volunteers run a second-hand bookshop just to the right of the gift shop in the Stableyard. An Internet Archive snapshot taken on 19 May 2026 shows the park's page for it promising fiction, non-fiction and even rare editions, and saying every sale funds the Tatton Park Charitable Trust's conservation projects. Under the 2026 timetable it trades every day until 25 October, then from 26 October keeps to Tuesday-to-Sunday afternoons, from noon to 4pm, and shuts on Mondays.

Charity shops

Charity shop (North West Cancer Research)

North West Cancer Research Shop, Stockton Heath

65 London Rd, Stockton Heath, Warrington WA4 6SG

On London Road in Stockton Heath, the village 2.2 miles to the south, North West Cancer Research runs the branch that its own news piece describes as its first ever charity shop. That article lists books among the donated clothing, homeware and designer pieces, alongside never-worn stock from high-street retailers. A Warrington Guardian reporter touring the street's charity shops with £10, in a piece published on 10 August 2025, called its clothes rail beautifully laid out. St Rocco's, Save the Children, The Children's Society and Claire House trade on the same stretch, so several charity shops fit into one walk.

Charity shop (St Rocco's Hospice)

St Rocco's Hospice Shop, Lymm

2 The Cross, Lymm WA13 0HP

In Lymm, the village about four miles east of the centre, St Rocco's Hospice keeps its shop at The Cross, on the site of the old post office by the Lower Dam. When the hospice gave up its separate book shop on Bridgewater Street, a spokesperson told Warrington Worldwide on 4 March 2024 that both operations would be combined here, while residents warned that the space for books would shrink. A Warrington Guardian story of 7 April 2026, about a surprise birthday party thrown for one of its volunteers, shows the shop still trading. The hospice suggests ringing 01925 758057 before carrying donations in.

Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

Rixton Car Boot

Moat Ln, Rixton, Warrington WA3 6EE

In Rixton, about 3.7 miles east of the centre, this Moat Lane sale announces its openings on its Facebook page. Shortly after midday on Sunday 27 September 2026 the organiser posted an apology for that day and announced that its indoor car boot would open from the following Sunday, 4 October. A post on the Monday set £15 for two tables, which sellers must bring themselves, and £10 whatever the vehicle, with buyers arriving at 11:30am. Books never come up in those announcements, so treat any as a bonus.

Local sourcing tips

  • Directories still place the Warrington Book Loft at an address in town, but its own website says it has traded in second-hand books since 1994, first from a shop and, by its own account, online only from a base in Somerset; phone or browse its Antiqbook listings rather than set out to find it.
  • Under the arches of Warrington Central Station, next to the bus station, Rock Steady Boxing advertised a Sunday book sale in November 2025, stocked with more than 800 books donated through St Rocco's Hospice, as Warrington Worldwide posted on 7 November; keep an eye on local event pages in case it returns.
  • St Peter's Church at Oughtrington, on the Lymm side of the borough, held a bric-a-brac and book sale on Saturday 22 August 2026, and its Facebook page, which thanked visitors the following morning, is the place to watch for the next one.
  • In the town centre, the British Heart Foundation shop at 12 Buttermarket Street and Barnardo's in the Bridge Shopping Centre on Knutsford Road both list books among the goods on their own shop pages, and both open on Sundays.
  • Warrington Market at Time Square counts comics among the goods sold by its 50-plus traders, according to the council's market page dated 22 September 2026; the main hall closes on Sundays.

Where can I find cheap used books in Warrington?

Within the borough, start with the London Road charity shops of Stockton Heath, where North West Cancer Research names books in its own write-up, and St Rocco's at The Cross in Lymm, where the hospice said in March 2024 it would merge its old book shop. Book-specialist shelves are a short drive south-east: Oxfam's Knutsford shop has concentrated on books for 20 years by the local paper's account, and the volunteer-run room at Tatton Park funds the estate's charitable trust.

Where do I sell used books in Warrington?

None of these charity shops buys books, because they run on donated stock, but both car boots rent pitches to sellers: £10 for a car at Winwick on Sundays, £10 for any vehicle or £15 for two tables at Rixton. Anything collectable earns more listed on its own, through Vinted, an eBay.co.uk auction or, when it carries a barcode, Amazon.co.uk. Stand the box spine-up on the bonnet before you drive to Winwick, take one BiblioScan picture of it, and the app prices each title for resale, telling apart the ones that deserve their own listing from those headed back into the crate.

Which day is best for book hunting in Warrington?

Sunday, if you start early: the Winwick car boot opens at 5:30am, Rixton lets buyers in from 11:30am on 4 October 2026, and the North West Cancer Research shop and St Rocco's in Lymm both trade from 10am to 4pm. Tatton Park's book room opens daily until 25 October, but from the next day it shuts on Mondays.

Which charity shops have books in Warrington?

North West Cancer Research in Stockton Heath names books in its own account of the shop, and St Rocco's Hospice announced in March 2024 that its Lymm book shop would be combined with its shop at The Cross. Beyond the borough, Oxfam's Princess Street branch in Knutsford and the Tatton Park Charitable Trust's Stableyard shop both specialise in second-hand books.
