Chester, the walled Roman city on the River Dee in Cheshire, England, concentrates its used-book browsing within about half a mile of the Town Hall on Northgate Street. Bookingham Palace sells books and records a short way up from the Town Hall, Amblongus Books trades just beyond the Northgate arch, and the Oxfam on Frodsham Street is two shops knocked into one, with one side kept for books. Down by the Roman Amphitheatre, the SHARE Shop on Pepper Street raises money for a homelessness charity, and Secret Identity Comics, out along Boughton towards the station, deals in back issues as well as the week's new comics. Prices quoted throughout are in sterling.
One more stop sits further out. Across the Welsh border in Buckley, Flintshire, about 8 miles away, The Berwyn Bookshop moved into bigger premises on Brunswick Road in April 2026 and shelves second-hand titles beside new ones. As of 20 October 2026, the PBFA calendar for 2026 and 2027 lists no antiquarian fair in Chester or anywhere else in Cheshire.
The trail lost a shop in summer 2026. Aldous Books, an antiquarian and second-hand dealer on Godstall Lane by the cathedral, had opened on 5 April 2025 and shut its doors on Sunday 28 June 2026, Chester Nub News reported, with its owners blaming rising costs; their Liverpool branch carries on. Chapters, the book-and-wine bar launched on Watergate Row South in March 2026, and Books on the Walls are both new-book shops by the Six Bookshop guide's reckoning.
Second-hand and rare bookshopAmblongus Books
19 Upper Northgate St, Chester CH1 4EE
Outside the city walls on Upper Northgate Street, roughly 400 yards north-north-west of the Town Hall, Sally Atkin opened this second-hand bookshop in December 2021, and since few of its books ever go up on the website, browsing in person is the whole point. Amy Clarke of the rare-book dealer Six Bookshop, writing in June 2026, found children's collectables and specialist runs on religion and art, and left with ornithology and vintage natural history. A blog post the shop published on 28 January 2026 explains what it will take in: unusual titles and whole collections, house-clearance lots included, get a hearing, while cheap, tired or damaged copies usually don't. A self-contained flat above the shop is let to visitors, and the shop's number is 01244 726360.
Book and record shopBookingham Palace – Vinyl Richie
98 Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HT
About 150 yards up Northgate Street from the Town Hall, a book-and-vinyl shop whose Facebook page promises a huge stock at low prices and a friendly face behind the counter. The Six Bookshop guide of June 2026 files it among Chester's second-hand bookshops, with shelves running from folios and poetry to religion and new editions, and sends natural-history hunters to a big case of wildlife titles at the back. Its page was still posting book videos on 7 October 2026, and that is also the place to check the opening times before making a special trip.
Charity shop (Oxfam)Oxfam Shop Chester
31/33 Frodsham St, Chester CH1 3JJ
On Frodsham Street, a 300-yard walk east-north-east from the Town Hall, Oxfam's branch is two shops joined together, and its own page sets one of them aside as a book shop where anything from a paperback for a long bus ride to a first edition can turn up, alongside DVDs, postcards, stamps and coins. Clothing and accessories fill the other half, and homewares are sold too. An April 2026 capture in the Wayback Machine shows identical wording, and the branch still lists no hours, telling shoppers to contact it instead.
Bookshop (new and second-hand)The Berwyn Bookshop
Unit 1, Brunswick Court, 13-17 Brunswick Rd, Buckley CH7 2ED
In Buckley, over the Welsh border in Flintshire and about 8 miles from Chester as the crow flies, a family-run bookshop that has traded since 2022 and, by its website's account, mixes the latest releases with second-hand favourites, rare finds and special editions. The Leader reported on 20 April 2026 that the shop had opened its larger new home on Brunswick Road two days earlier, with the town's mayor on hand, and summed up the stock as new, second-hand and specialist titles. Its National Book Tokens listing adds a coffee shop on site and free parking nearby.
Hours: Mon–Sat 10am–4pmWebsite Where can I find cheap used books in Chester?
Start on Northgate Street at Bookingham Palace, which pitches itself on low prices and which the Six Bookshop guide found cheaper than the big chains. The Oxfam on Frodsham Street keeps a whole side for books, and SHARE's Pepper Street shop is the place for children's titles. Amblongus is better for scarcer volumes than for bargains.
Where do I sell used books in Chester?
Amblongus will look at unusual titles and at larger collections such as house-clearance lots, ideally after seeing a sample list, but turns away cheap or damaged copies. Fables, the Beeston station shop, says it is actively seeking stock. Got a box of mixed paperbacks? Lay them out with the spines showing and snap a single photo in BiblioScan, which prices every spine it can match against the resale market; the few titles that earn their keep can go to a dealer or onto Vinted, eBay or Amazon's UK site, and the remainder can be donated.
Which charity shops have books in Chester?
The Oxfam on Frodsham Street has a dedicated book side, and SHARE pushed its children's books in a July 2026 post. Other city-centre charity shops could well hold a few books, yet their pages only repeat each charity's national wording.
Are there any used book fairs in Chester?
Not as of 20 October 2026: none of the PBFA fairs listed for 2026 and 2027 is in Cheshire. Closer to home, the Rummage Club suitcase market in Exchange Square brought out sellers with books in summer 2026, though no further date was up by the middle of October.
Which day is best for book hunting in Chester?
Wednesday to Saturday, the days on which all three shops with published trading days overlap. SHARE and The Berwyn Bookshop open Monday to Saturday, and Secret Identity Comics opens Wednesday to Sunday. On a Sunday, Secret Identity is the one of those three to rely on; for Amblongus, Bookingham Palace and Oxfam, a quick call or message first saves a wasted journey.
