Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire in England, sits inside a tight loop of the River Severn, and most of its second-hand book stops are a short stroll from the Old Market Hall on The Square. The Raven Bookshop trades upstairs in the Market Hall, Oxfam's bookshop and Second Chapter Books are a short walk east around Dogpole and St Mary's Place, and the Unitarian church on the High Street hosts a monthly book sale. Any price you see quoted is in sterling.
Over the Welsh Bridge, Frankwell has a shop of vintage books and collectables, and the West Mid Showground, a short way north-north-west, runs a Sunday car boot in season. Further out, Attingham Park, the National Trust estate at Atcham, sells donated books in its grounds, Much Wenlock's High Street has a shop of used books and music under new ownership since 2026, and Church Stretton, among the hills to the south, has a small bookshop raising money for its community centre.

Shrewsbury Market Hall, Claremont St, Shrewsbury SY1 1HQ
Upstairs in Shrewsbury Market Hall, about 140 yards west-north-west of the Old Market Hall, Laura Bottomley has run this pre-loved bookshop since taking it over in the summer of 2017, and My Shrewsbury marked its eighth birthday with her on Saturday 31 May 2025. In that interview she explained how completing York's Antiquarian Book Seminar in 2023 led to the shop joining the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association and printing a catalogue of its collectable books. Her website lists crime, classics and children's fiction next to local and military history, plus a run of antiquarian and collectable books. In May 2026 the Market Hall promoted a free Book Collecting for Beginners session with the shop on its gallery level.

Some 240 yards east of The Square, this is Oxfam's book branch, and its own page promises classics, specialist subjects and rare or collectable titles alongside modern fiction. Staff here picked out an 1890 first edition of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four from a routine donation, and the BBC reported on 27 March 2026 that it had fetched £11,520 at Bonhams. Shropshire Live covered the reopening after a full refit in November 2025, describing oriented strand board fittings and wallpaper printed from 1970s and 1980s covers of Oxfam's Bother magazine.

Across the Welsh Bridge in Frankwell, around 535 yards north-west of The Square, a 16th-century building beside the river holds three floors of what the shop's website describes as second-hand books, with vintage and antiquarian titles and paper ephemera as its specialities. Coins, medals and militaria, old photographs and film and sporting memorabilia share the space, a little stock is sold online through eBay and AbeBooks, and dogs are welcome. The shop's Facebook page posted a short video on 7 April 2026.

At Atcham, roughly 4 miles out of town to the east-south-east, the National Trust's 18th-century Attingham Park estate runs the Grooms' Rooms second-hand bookshop in the Stables Courtyard, which its shopping page says holds hundreds of pre-loved books over two floors: fiction and children's books on the ground floor, factual and reference titles upstairs. A post on the estate's Facebook page on 19 April 2026 reminded visitors that every sale helps pay for the care of Attingham's buildings, collections and landscape. Small donations of good second-hand books can be handed in at Visitor Reception.

6 High St, Much Wenlock TF13 6AA
In Much Wenlock, about 11.3 miles south-east of Shrewsbury, this High Street shop deals in second-hand books and music, and the Shropshire Star reported on 22 March 2026 that 24-year-old Abi Nuttall had taken it over that month after almost 24 years in the hands of one family. Its website boasts upwards of 40,000 books, ranging from modern titles to the more antiquarian, and also supplies books by the metre for shopfits and decorative shelving. Books, vinyl, CDs and DVDs are bought in too.
Hours: Mon–Tue, Thu–Sat 10am–4pmWebsite Where can I find cheap used books in Shrewsbury?
Head for the Raven in the Market Hall first: its owner told My Shrewsbury in 2025 that crime paperbacks go at three for £5 and that the sale shelves stay out all year rather than for one annual clearance. The Unitarian church's monthly sale is pitched at bargain hunters and helps mend the church roof, and the tables at the showground car boot are a cheaper, if less predictable, gamble.
Where do I sell used books in Shrewsbury?
Laura Bottomley at the Raven says on her website that she buys from local people clearing their shelves, and Much More Books in Much Wenlock takes books, vinyl, CDs and DVDs, though it wants a call first. Before you split a box between them, prop the books up so their spines face you and snap one photo with BiblioScan, which puts a title and a current second-hand price against each spine it manages to recognise; the handful worth listing separately, on eBay.co.uk or else Vinted, will be obvious. Oxfam on Dogpole and the Unitarian church sale both take the rest as donations.
Which charity shops have books in Shrewsbury?
Oxfam's branch at 10 Dogpole is the charity's book shop in town, with greetings cards and music alongside. Out of town, the National Trust's bookshop at Attingham Park raises money for the estate, and Reuben's shop in Church Stretton passes its takings to the Mayfair Community Centre.
Which day is best for book hunting in Shrewsbury?
Saturday, above all the month's first Saturday: the Raven, Second Chapter, Oxfam, Welsh Bridge Books, Much More Books and Reuben's all list Saturday opening, and the Unitarian church adds its midday sale. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday also suit all six, though the Raven keeps short hours on Thursdays. Mondays shut the Raven, Second Chapter and Reuben's, Much More Books closes on Wednesdays, and of those six, Sunday leaves only Oxfam and Welsh Bridge Books, plus the showground car boot in season.
