Where to buy used books in Birkenhead

Updated 01/10/2026

Birkenhead sits on the Wirral peninsula in Merseyside, facing Liverpool across the Mersey. A few miles north, Wallasey and New Brighton have Literally Books on Atherton Street and the Floral Pavilion, home of the Wirral Book Fair, about 0.4 miles apart by the seafront, while the Friends of Wallasey Central Library hold their sales in Liscard. Birkenhead itself has two Sunday car boots, one in the open air at Prenton Park and one under the roof of a former swimming baths in Rock Ferry. Expect to pay in sterling throughout.

Further south, just over the Wirral boundary in Cheshire West and Chester, Shop 4 Neston sells donated books on Liverpool Road. Carry on south-east from the town for another mile and a half and Ness Botanic Gardens keeps a set of second-hand shelves for its visitors.

Independent second-hand bookshop

Literally Books

12 Atherton St, New Brighton, Wallasey CH45 2NY

In New Brighton, part of Wallasey, roughly 3.5 miles north-north-west of Birkenhead centre, this shop is one of the two booksellers behind the Wirral Book Fair down the road. The Floral Pavilion calls it New Brighton's well-loved independent bookshop. Its own Facebook page announced a fresh batch of Ladybird books on 25 April 2026, and on 9 July 2026 warned that the shop was taking a few days off before reopening the next Tuesday, so look there before you make a special trip.

Book fair

Wirral Book Fair

Floral Pavilion, Marine Promenade, New Brighton CH45 2JS

New Brighton, Wallasey: the Plaza at the Floral Pavilion theatre, 3.5 miles up the peninsula from Birkenhead, hosts a Saturday book fair with free entry. The venue's regular-events page lists the coming dates as 17 October and 14 November 2026, then 23 January, 20 February and 27 March 2027, and says the second-hand stock comes from Literally Books and the Liscard Book Exchange in Wallasey. In a post of 23 September 2026 Literally gave the October fair extended hours, from 10am until 4pm, whereas the theatre's listing keeps the usual 10am to 2:30pm, the same slot the Wirral Globe printed for the 9 May 2026 edition.

Library Friends book sale

Friends of Wallasey Central Library 20p Book Sale

Wallasey Central Library, Earlston Rd, Wallasey CH45 5DX

In Liscard, Wallasey, 2.9 miles out of Birkenhead heading north-north-west, the volunteer Friends group sells books inside the central library on Earlston Road. Its newsletter of 20 September 2026 set the next sale for Saturday 3 October, with every book, DVD and CD going for 20p, a reminder to bring cash, and refreshments on sale. Earlier issues announced Saturday sales on 16 May and 11 July 2026, each with the same pause between 1pm and 2pm, which matches the lunch closure Wirral Council applies to all its libraries.

Community charity shop

Shop 4 Neston

6 Liverpool Rd, Neston CH64 3RA

Across the Wirral boundary in Neston, Cheshire West and Chester, about seven miles south-south-west of Birkenhead, this community shop gives all its profits to local good causes, according to its Instagram post of 22 July 2026. On 19 May 2026 it priced all its books at three for £1, and two months later it was appealing for paperbacks because stock was running low. That appeal asked readers to drop unwanted paperbacks at the shop, which opens Monday to Saturday.

Botanic garden book shelves

Second-hand bookshelves at Ness Botanic Gardens

Ness Botanic Gardens, Neston Rd, Ness, Neston CH64 4AY

At Ness, near Neston in Cheshire West and Chester, some eight miles south of Birkenhead, the University of Liverpool's botanic gardens sell pre-loved books from shelves set out for visitors, and each purchase goes towards looking after the gardens. They are part of the gardens' programme for the National Year of Reading 2026, covering everything from gardening and nature to travel and fiction, and you're invited to leave a book of your own for the next reader. Admission to the gardens is £8.50 for an adult without Gift Aid, the university doesn't say where on the site the shelves stand, and under the summer timetable running to 31 October 2026 the gates open at 10am with last entry at 4:30pm.

Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

The BIG Wirral Car Boot Sale

Prenton Park car park, Prenton Rd W, Birkenhead CH42 9PY

In Prenton, 1.2 miles south-south-west of Birkenhead's centre, the car park at Tranmere Rovers' ground fills with up to 250 sellers on Sunday mornings, although the organiser stresses it has no tie to the football club. Its Facebook page reported on 29 November 2025 that Wirral Council's licensing committee had cleared the sale's return for 2026, and its website promises a sale every Sunday in good weather, bans new goods and charges buyers £1 with children free. Rain called it off on Sunday 27 September 2026, with the news posted the previous lunchtime. The organiser never mentions books, so paperbacks depend entirely on who has a pitch that week.

Indoor car boot sale

Byrne Avenue Baths Indoor Car Boot Sale

Byrne Avenue Baths, Byrne Ave, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead CH42 4PQ

Rock Ferry sits 1.4 miles from Birkenhead's centre on a south-south-east bearing, and there the trust that rescued the old Byrne Avenue swimming baths fills its building with sellers' tables on the second Sunday of each calendar month and lets buyers in free. On 1 October 2026 its booking page was taking seller reservations for Sunday 11 October, and an Instagram post of 18 August 2026 admitted it may not be the largest sale on the Wirral while promising a dry morning. The trust advertises its café and its own shop alongside the pitches but never lists books, so any paperbacks come down to that month's sellers.

Local sourcing tips

  • Business directories still carry a Wirral Hospice St John's charity bookshop on Seaview Road in Wallasey, but that address is missing from the list of eleven shops on the hospice's own website as of 1 October 2026, and the same page puts donations of books and DVDs on hold.
  • On a fair Saturday, take the Wirral Line to New Brighton: the Floral Pavilion's directions send you down Atherton Street, past Literally Books, to the promenade, then right towards Fort Perch Rock for about five minutes.
  • On Friday 18 September 2026 the Prenton Park car boot used Facebook to forecast sunshine and a very busy Sunday, urging buyers to arrive early, so its page is worth a look the evening before you go.
  • Hulme Hall, a function venue in Port Sunlight village, advertised book fairs for 13 July 2025 and Sunday 26 April 2026; the 2026 fairs calendar on its website lists flea markets and antique, craft and Christmas fairs but no book fair, so follow the hall on Facebook for the next one.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Birkenhead?

Everything at the Liscard library sale on 3 October 2026 costs 20p. Shop 4 Neston ran its whole book stock at three for £1 in May 2026. On Sundays, buyers pay £1 at the Prenton Park car boot and nothing at the indoor one in Rock Ferry, though neither organiser promises books.

Where do I sell used books in Birkenhead?

Shop 4 Neston and the Ness gardens want your unwanted books as gifts, not purchases. If you'd sooner turn them into cash, a seller's pitch at Prenton Park is £10 a car, and the online route is eBay.co.uk, Vinted or Amazon.co.uk. Before you pick a channel, point BiblioScan at the bookcase: from a single picture it estimates what every recognised spine could resell for, which tells you what deserves a proper listing and what can simply go back in the donation bag.

Are there any used book fairs in Birkenhead?

Yes, in New Brighton: the Wirral Book Fair returns to the Floral Pavilion five more times between October 2026 and March 2027, always on a Saturday and always free to enter. Two Wallasey dealers bring the stock, and Literally has announced longer hours for the October date. Over in Port Sunlight, Hulme Hall advertised one of its own for April 2026.

Which day is best for book hunting in Birkenhead?

Saturday, above all in October 2026, with the 20p library sale in Wallasey on the 3rd and the book fair in New Brighton on the 17th, plus Shop 4 Neston, which trades Monday to Saturday. Sunday mornings belong to the car boots: Prenton Park whenever the weather holds, and the indoor sale at Rock Ferry on the second Sunday, next on 11 October.
