Where to buy used books in Toowoomba

Toowoomba's secondhand book trade is spread thinly across the range, so plan it by car. In the CBD, Lifeline's Emporium sits on Ruthven Street; a couple of kilometres west in Newtown, a Lifeline superstore on Herries Street and a Salvos Stores op shop in Clifford Gardens are less than 300 metres apart; and Lifeline's book-focused shop is in East Toowoomba's Range Shopping Centre. The rest sit further out: an independent secondhand shop at Top Camp on the southern edge, a children's bookshop with pre-loved stock in Highfields to the north, and a charity op shop down in Withcott, just past the edge of Toowoomba's official urban footprint in census geography. Each listing beyond the CBD leads with the suburb's name, and any dollar figure here is in Australian dollars.

Charity carries most of the cheap stock, and one event sets the calendar. Lifeline Darling Downs ran its 45th Chronicle Lifeline Bookfest at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in March 2026 and says it will return in 2027. In East Toowoomba, inside The Range Shopping Centre on James Street, Lifeline Darling Downs keeps a shop built around pre-loved books, which its store page says run from timeless classics and bestsellers to children's titles and hidden gems. A Facebook post from the charity on 23 September 2026 said the Neverending Stories Book Sale had returned, taking half off children's and teen books from 19 September to 3 October 2026 and spreading the savings across all of its stores that year. Lifeline's shop list puts its general Range store at the same street address, so one car park covers both.

In Top Camp, roughly 7 km down the New England Highway on the town's southern fringe, a secondhand bookshop that The Field Guide placed across from the University of Southern Queensland in March 2023. On 16 January 2026 an author congratulated the owner on opening the new Top Camp premises, three rooms full of books, and the shop posted its new address and trading times on Facebook on 25 January 2026. The page still invites readers to bring in books they have finished to keep them circulating, and the shop put up a new Facebook post on Saturday 26 September 2026.

Up in Highfields, close to 11 km north of the city centre, a bookshop whose Facebook bio promises new and preloved books for women and children; the High Country Hamlets tourism group said the same of its gently used stock in a post of 1 September 2026. The shop's own page added on 7 September 2026 that books deserve a second chance too. Its website adds a Wednesday morning story-time and craft session for three- to five-year-olds, an adult book club that takes a different genre each month, and author visits over the September school holidays.

The Chronicle Lifeline Bookfest

In Glenvale, some 7 km out on the western side of town, the Founders Pavilion at the Toowoomba Showgrounds hosted the 45th Chronicle Lifeline Bookfest on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March 2026, with free entry, free parking and EFTPOS, according to Lifeline Darling Downs. The charity describes the fair as one of the region's annual events, run for more than 45 years, and stacks it with thousands of secondhand titles plus puzzles and games. Its Bookfest page promises a 2027 edition but had no dates up as of 28 September 2026; the 2025 and 2026 rounds both ran over a weekend in early March.

Salvos Stores Clifford Gardens is around 270 metres away, so you can park once and walk between them.

In Newtown, inside the Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre on Anzac Avenue, a Salvos Stores op shop that opened on Thursday 9 October 2025, as Toowoomba Minute reported the following day. In that report the centre's marketing manager singled out homewares, second-hand clothing and books as the draw for shoppers. The Salvation Army's store page gives six-day trading, and its 5pm Saturday finish beats every other shop here that publishes its hours.

Out in Withcott, some 7 km east of Toowoomba's CBD and beyond the boundary of the Toowoomba Significant Urban Area in census geography, a not-for-profit op shop tucked behind the row of shops on the highway, so watch for its sign. Its Facebook page called a one-day rainy-Friday sale with books, DVDs and CDs at half price on 27 February 2026, then showed off its stock on 4 June 2026 under the line "Books glorious books!". Its posts give an 8:30am to 3pm day but disagree on the week: a video of 21 March 2026 said Monday to Saturday, while a post of 23 May 2026 said every day, so check before a Sunday visit.

Local sourcing tips

Lifeline Darling Downs has seven Toowoomba shops, but most of their store pages share one stock sentence, word for word, about clothing, linen, books, homewares and bric-a-brac. The Range, Wyalla, Wilsonton and Anzac Avenue shops carry it, as do the Oakey, Dalby and Warwick branches, which proves nothing about any single shelf. Wilsonton had its grand opening as a Lifeline 2.0 concept store in September 2026 and is the next one worth checking in person.
Vinnies on Ruthven Street is missing for a similar reason: its page carries a near-identical sentence about clothing, toys, books and media to the one Vinnies Queensland uses for its Dalby and Warwick shops. The Red Cross store page for Ruthven Street mentions no books at all, and Tony's Community Op Shop in Rockville lists clothing, furniture, household goods and bric-a-brac on its own site. Drop in if you're nearby, though none of them documents books for that particular store.
PCYC's Sunday market on James Street may turn up books. The Toowoomba Regional Council visitor guide, whose markets page carries twilight market dates through December 2026, says the stalls run from fruit to furniture and from books to bubble tea, so it is the council rather than the organiser vouching for the books.
Several Toowoomba bookshops deal in new stock. The Book Tree on Ruthven Street, under new owners since 2024, The Book Pour, a bookshop and wine bar that opened on Ruthven Street in late July 2026, and the chain stores are good browsing but not a resale source. For comics, Kaboom Comics & Collectables at 345a Ruthven Street keeps a back-issues section online alongside its new comics.
Library stock gets cleared out too. Toowoomba Region Libraries held a book sale at Highfields Library on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August 2026, where a shopping bag filled cost $5 and payment was by card only, as the libraries announced on Facebook on 25 August. It has posted no repeat date, so follow the libraries' page for the next one.
Rare-book hunters will need to travel. The Queensland list of ANZAAB, the Australian and New Zealand antiquarian booksellers' association, names three members and none of them is in Toowoomba.
