Where to buy used books in Southend-on-Sea

Updated 01/10/2026

Southend-on-Sea, the Essex seaside city on the Thames estuary, scatters its second-hand books over small, separate stops rather than a single bookshop street. Two sit a short walk apart near the city centre, Books-on-Sea on Alexandra Street and Southend Mencap's Novel Coffee Shop on London Road, while a Sue Ryder charity shop in Westcliff lists books in its mixed stock, Leigh Gallery Books holds on along Leigh Road in Leigh-on-Sea and the Shoebury Bookshed works out of a church car park at the city's eastern end. All the figures quoted are in sterling.

Battlesbridge, just over the Chelmsford boundary, hides an antiquarian dealer inside one of its antiques centres. Further out, treat the extras as separate outings: a church-run book corner inside a Rochford charity shop, the Canvey Island air ambulance shop announced for a 22 December 2025 opening with a dedicated book area, and a Rayleigh car boot whose latest dated Sunday fell on 20 September 2026. The library's spring 2026 clearance sale and a handful of postal and online buyers fill the gaps.

Second-hand and antiquarian bookshop

Books-on-Sea

23 Alexandra St, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1BX

On Alexandra Street, close to the heart of the city, Books-on-Sea describes its stock as second-hand and antiquarian books, with some new titles, bookish gifts and Southend souvenirs alongside. It buys over the counter too, naming science fiction and fantasy, contemporary fiction, music, film, art and the local history of Essex, Southend and Leigh as the shelves it wants to fill, and it warns that condition decides whether a book is taken. Great British Life's guide to living in and visiting the city, published on 28 August 2025, sent readers here for the second-hand stock and pointed out that the shop also buys. The shop's website carries two different opening grids, one with Tuesday and Sunday trading and one that closes both days and shortens Wednesday to a morning, so ring before building a trip around the quieter days.

Second-hand and rare bookshop

Leigh Gallery Books

137 Leigh Rd, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 1JQ

In Leigh-on-Sea, a couple of miles west along Leigh Road, Leigh Gallery Books has traded since 3 December 1985, a date its owners recalled on Facebook on 1 January 2026 when they marked passing the 40-year mark. Its AbeBooks storefront lists secondhand books, CDs, vinyl, DVDs, prints, posters, ephemera and collectables, and adds that the titles listed online are kept in a different location, so ask before making the journey for one of them. Facebook posts on 11 and 25 February 2026 announced a sale halving everything previously priced up to £20 and taking 20% off anything dearer. The same AbeBooks text offers visits at other times by arrangement.

Antiquarian bookshop

Jim's Books & Ephemera

Bones Lane Antiques Centre, Hawk Hill, Battlesbridge SS11 7RE

Across the boundary in the City of Chelmsford district, at Battlesbridge on the River Crouch, 8.5 miles to the north-west of Southend, this antiquarian dealer, established in 2017, trades from Bones Lane Antiques Centre, whose Haybarn opened for antiques on 11 September 1969. The about page says most of the books are more than a hundred years old and mainly in English, sold alongside vintage art, historic newspapers, periodicals and printed ephemera, with 5% off purchases over £10 for students, NHS staff, pensioners and armed forces personnel among others. A Book of the Month feature on the home page covered June, July and August 2026, July's pick being Edgar Allan Poe. The shop warns that its daily hours are subject to change and says it prefers to arrange sales by appointment, so phone first.

Hours: Mon–Sun 11am–4pmWebsite
Charity book café (Southend Mencap)

The Novel Coffee Shop

98 London Rd, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1PG

Just west of the centre on London Road, Southend Mencap runs a café whose shelves carry second-hand books next to records, CDs and DVDs given by supporters, and whose page, in the copy archived in February 2025, suggests pairing a coffee and a slice of cake with a browse for a book. The café gives adults with learning disabilities training and work placements, and the charity asks for good-quality books, CDs and DVDs to keep the stock up. Its Facebook page calls it a book shop and coffee shop selling secondhand books, DVDs, CDs and vinyl, and was still posting on 30 September 2026. The opening times given here come from that same charity page, which still carries its launch-era wording, so ring before a special trip.

Church-run second-hand bookshop

The Shoebury Bookshed

Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church, 90 Thorpedene Gardens, Shoeburyness SS3 9JD

In Shoeburyness, the city's eastern tip, nearly three miles out, Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church runs a second-hand bookshop out of a shed on its car park, its shelves split between novels, non-fiction titles and children's reading. The church's community page promises Saturday mornings plus varying weekday sessions, and says each week's times go up on the Bookshed's Facebook page. A post there on Friday 24 July 2026 priced every children's book at 50p and gave school-holiday opening of Monday to Saturday, 9:30am till 2:30pm, so read the newest post before setting off.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Sue Ryder)

Sue Ryder Westcliff

144 Hamlet Court Rd, Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 7LN

In Westcliff-on-Sea, a 0.8-mile stroll westward from the city centre, Sue Ryder's branch at 144 Hamlet Court Road counts books, CDs and DVDs among the clothing, accessories, bric-a-brac and toys sold by its local team, according to the charity's own listing for the shop as archived on 3 January 2026. The same page puts it a minute from the bus routes and five minutes from Westcliff station, with parking outside for anyone unloading donations. Books make up one strand of a mixed stock, not a separate section, so fold the shelf into a walk towards Leigh instead of making a special journey.

Local sourcing tips

  • Selling locally comes down to a few doors. Books-on-Sea, the Alexandra Street shop, looks at good fiction, genre titles and anything on local history, and turns away tired copies. Theology has a specialist: Gage Postal Books, a mail-order dealer working from a Westcliff PO box that dates itself to 1971 and lists catalogues of more than 20,000 books, says it is always keen on theological collections, early Methodist material and anything printed before 1800. Comic runs can go to ACE Comics, whose Clarence Street branch is one of two it runs in Essex; its buying page offers 10p to 25p a comic for a whole clear-out, never more than half the market value, against a list you email in.
  • Keep an eye on the Southend Libraries Instagram account for the next clearance sale at The Forum on Elmer Square. On 8 May 2026 it announced a week-long sale from 9 to 16 May with every book at 50p and comics at 20p, covering science fiction, romance, fantasy, horror, crime, non-fiction and manga.
  • Car boots around the city run on their organisers' terms. The field beside the Carpenters Arms on London Road at Rawreth, in Rochford district near Rayleigh, had dated sales from Sunday 21 June to Sunday 20 September 2026, buyers paying 50p; the post for that last date, on 16 September, promised to keep the season going while the field stayed dry, and none of the announcements mentions books, so watch its Facebook page for anything further. Lazybones has advertised a Sunday sale on the Leigh-on-Sea station car park, but the most recent organiser post naming the station site dates from May 2025, so confirm it is still trading before setting an alarm. The Sadlers Farm boot sale lies in Basildon, outside Southend's area.
  • Three more charity counters reward a detour when you are nearby. The Isaiah Project's Project Too on Southchurch Road, numbered 623 on the project's own website, specialises, by its own account, in clothing and bric-a-brac, yet a video the project posted on 6 November 2025 showed books at five for £1. In Rochford, Hawkwell Baptist Church calls its Book Hub the bookstore arm of its charity shop, and its Facebook posts of 19 January and 2 February 2026 placed it inside the Faith, Hope and Charity Shop on Ashingdon Road, with books at 50p and donations welcome. On Canvey Island, in Castle Point, the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance shop at 39-41 Furtherwick Road appeared in the Essex Chambers of Commerce Grapevine for December 2025 with a large, dedicated bookshop area, a first for the charity, and its shop page lists Sunday trading.
  • Not every promising shopfront sells second-hand books. Read on Sea on Leigh Broadway sells new books, and Waterstones on the High Street is a new-book chain. Havens Hospices runs charity shops in Southend, Leigh, Hadleigh and Rayleigh, yet its shop pages list books only among general donations, so count a paperback shelf there as luck, not a plan.
  • Books-on-Sea, the Novel Coffee Shop and The Forum library form one easy loop on foot around the city centre, and Sue Ryder on Hamlet Court Road lies a little further west, on the way to Leigh. Leigh Gallery Books, out west on Leigh Road, and the Project Too, east along Southchurch Road, each make a short hop by bus or car. Shoeburyness, Rochford, Canvey Island and Battlesbridge are separate trips, and at Battlesbridge the antiques centres sit close together around Maltings Road and Hawk Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Southend-on-Sea?

Start with the charities. The Shoebury Bookshed put its children's books at 50p each in a summer 2026 post, Hawkwell Baptist Church's Book Hub in Rochford advertised 50p books in January 2026, and the library's spring clearance at The Forum in May 2026 sold every book for 50p. The Project Too on Southchurch Road showed five books for a pound in an autumn 2025 video, and Leigh Gallery Books runs its own sales, with everything up to the £20 mark going for half in February 2026.

Where do I sell used books in Southend-on-Sea?

Books-on-Sea buys across its own counter, choosily, with subject and condition both counting. Theological collections suit Gage Postal Books, the Westcliff mail-order dealer, while ACE Comics on Clarence Street makes offers on comic back issues from a list you send. For everything else, WeBuyBooks and Ziffit quote online, and eBay.co.uk or Vinted suit the better titles. Before any of that, let the camera do the sorting: one picture of the bookcase goes into BiblioScan, which works out what every spine in the frame should fetch, and the high scorers get listed singly while the remainder leave together as a job lot.

Which day is best for book hunting in Southend-on-Sea?

Saturday. Leigh Gallery Books, Books-on-Sea, Southend Mencap's café and the Sue Ryder shop in Westcliff all trade that day, the Shoebury Bookshed's church lists Saturday mornings, and Jim's Books at Battlesbridge keeps daily hours. Avoid Monday, when Books-on-Sea and Leigh Gallery Books are both shut. On Sunday the choice comes down to Jim's Books, Sue Ryder, whose current page gives Sunday hours, and Books-on-Sea if its longer grid applies, with the air ambulance charity's Canvey branch also listing Sunday opening; the Carpenters Arms boot sale near Rayleigh last advertised a Sunday on 20 September 2026.

Which charity shops have books in Southend-on-Sea?

Southend Mencap's book café, the Novel Coffee Shop, sits on London Road, the Shoebury Bookshed is run by a Baptist church in Shoeburyness, and Sue Ryder's Westcliff branch includes books in the range its team sells. Outside the city, Hawkwell Baptist Church runs a Book Hub inside its Rochford charity shop, and Essex & Herts Air Ambulance trailed a dedicated book area for its Canvey Island branch. Havens Hospices also trades from several branches across the area, but its branch pages use near-identical wording about books, so check the shelves in person.
