Where to buy used books in Canterbury

Updated 20/10/2026

Canterbury, the cathedral city of east Kent in England, keeps its second-hand bookshops inside a compact loop of the medieval walls. Chaucer Bookshop on Beer Cart Lane stocks antiquarian and second-hand titles over two floors, the homelessness charity Catching Lives keeps a volunteer-staffed bookshop inside the leaning Crooked House on Palace Street, and Pilgrims Hospices fills Burgate Books, a short walk from the Cathedral's Christ Church Gate, with more than 5,000 donated titles. Oxfam has a dedicated bookshop on St Peter's Street and a flagship general shop round the corner on Best Lane; Age UK Canterbury's shop on the same street and the hospice's St Dunstan's branch, just outside the Westgate, add a shelf of books each. Prices mentioned below are in pounds sterling.

The coast and the Swale towns widen the round. Pilgrims Hospices runs Horsebridge Books near the harbour in Whitstable and a general shop on Herne Bay High Street, where an Oxfam trades next door, all under seven miles away. Faversham, about eight miles to the west in the borough of Swale, packs three shops into a few hundred yards: Past Sentence and a Pilgrims shop next door to each other on West Street, then the Faversham Society's Fleur bookshop on Preston Street, where the Alexander Centre also hosts an indoor boot fair on set Saturdays into March 2027.

Two changes stood out by October 2026. The Crooked House building was put up for sale in August with vacant possession on completion, and Catching Lives said it held the lease and hoped to stay. Outdoors, K&T near Whitstable and Tilmanstone towards Dover had both closed their 2026 car boot seasons by mid-October.

Antiquarian and second-hand bookshop

Chaucer Bookshop

6-7 Beer Cart Lane, Canterbury CT1 2NY

About 480 yards from the Guildhall, heading south-south-east inside the city walls, this shop has traded since 1956 and spreads its stock over two floors of an 18th-century house, from fine bindings down to paperbacks, with original prints and maps alongside. Its homepage, unchanged in a June 2026 snapshot on the Internet Archive, counts upwards of 20,000 books on the premises and says only about a third of them appear in the online catalogue, so asking at the counter can turn up titles the website lacks. The owners buy good antiquarian and second-hand books but want a phone call or a description of the books before anything is brought in. They also advise ringing 01227 453912 before a trip, since weather and transport can shift the posted times, which include Sundays and bank holidays from noon.

Charity bookshop (Catching Lives)

Catching Lives Bookshop

28 Palace Street, Canterbury CT1 2DZ

Facing the King's School at the far end of Palace Street, the skewed 17th-century Crooked House, also called Sir John Boys House, holds the fundraising bookshop of Catching Lives, a Canterbury charity for people who are homeless or insecurely housed. The charity's page describes a large range of second-hand and collectable books, with every shift worked by volunteers, and asks for donations of classic and modern fiction above all. KentOnline reported on 17 August 2026 that the building had gone on the market with vacant possession on completion, after 12 years of the charity running the shop there, and quoted Catching Lives as saying it was the leaseholder and hoped to remain.

Charity bookshop (Pilgrims Hospices)

Burgate Books

10b Burgate, Canterbury CT1 2HG

Roughly 720 yards east-south-east of the Guildhall on the street leading to the Cathedral gate, Pilgrims Hospices' Canterbury book shop goes by the name of its street. Its branch page, archived in September 2026 with the same wording it carries in October, promises upwards of 5,000 books at any time across fiction and non-fiction, titles for children and teenagers, classics and vintage copies, together with a wide range of vinyl. Closing time is 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays but 5pm from Wednesday to Saturday, and Queningate car park is the nearest pay-and-display.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Bookshop Canterbury

51 St Peter's Street, Canterbury CT1 2BE

Less than 200 yards from the Guildhall going south-east, the charity's book-and-music branch was listed on its own Oxfam page when the Wayback Machine archived it in April 2026, and it still is. The city's visitor site, Visit Canterbury, lists the branch among its shops with vinyl, CDs and DVDs beside the books. Oxfam itself posts no timetable and tells shoppers to call 01227 454091; the visitor site lists Monday-to-Saturday opening from 9:30am until 5:30pm and Sunday trading from 11am to 4pm, so ring ahead if Sunday is the plan.

Charity bookshop (Pilgrims Hospices)

Horsebridge Books

9 Horsebridge Road, Whitstable CT5 1AF

In Whitstable, 5.9 miles NNW of Canterbury and close to the harbour, Pilgrims Hospices fitted out its books branch with shelving made from reclaimed timber. The hospice calls it Whitstable's only second-hand bookshop on its page, archived in September 2026, and promises fiction and non-fiction, books on local subjects and some antiquarian copies. Doors are open every day, with Sunday closing at 4pm.

Second-hand bookshops

Second-hand bookshop

Past Sentence

119 West Street, Faversham ME13 7JB

In Faversham, in the borough of Swale and roughly 8⅓ miles west-north-west of Canterbury, a family-run shop on the pedestrian stretch of West Street buys and sells second-hand books across a broad and shifting range of subjects, from fact to fantasy. Its one-page website showed the same text and timetable when archive.org stored a copy in July 2026: four days a week, skipping Monday and Wednesday, plus a five-hour Sunday session from 10am once a month, on the first Sunday, next due on 1 November 2026. Write to [email protected] or ring 01795 590000 about selling.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Shop Canterbury

13 Best Lane, Canterbury CT1 2JB

Near the Marlowe Theatre, a little over 300 yards from the Guildhall towards the Cathedral, the Best Lane branch calls itself a flagship shop on its Oxfam page, carrying the whole Sourced By Oxfam line of Fairtrade food, detergents and toiletries. Donated clothes, accessories, books, music, musical instruments, homewares and collectables make up the rest, wording that already stood when the page was archived in May 2026. Times aren't posted anywhere, so phone 01227 478821 first; the St Peter's Street bookshop is under 150 yards away.

Charity shop (Age UK Canterbury)

Age UK Canterbury

13A St Peter's Street, Canterbury CT1 2AT

Barely 30 yards from the Oxfam Bookshop, some 165 yards along St Peter's Street from the Guildhall, the local Age UK charity describes its shop as small and friendly and lists books with the clothing, crockery and bric-a-brac it sells. That wording and the timetable were both in place when the Wayback Machine archived the page in February 2026. The page gives 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 11:30am to 3pm on Sundays but says nothing about Saturdays, so ring ahead before a weekend visit.

Charity shop (Pilgrims Hospices)

Pilgrims Hospices St Dunstan's

78 St Dunstan's Street, Canterbury CT2 8BH

Just beyond the Westgate on the road to Canterbury West station, roughly 165 yards from the Guildhall in a north-westerly direction, this hospice shop lists games, DVDs, books and jigsaws for every age among its children's toys, clothing and the kitchen and bedding basics students need when they move in. The branch page, as it stood in a September 2026 archive copy, also credits one volunteer with more than 30 years of service to the charity. It is the closest of the hospice shops to the Westgate and keeps the same Monday-to-Saturday hours as its Faversham sister, with Sundays closed.

Charity shop (Pilgrims Hospices)

Pilgrims Hospices Herne Bay

42 High Street, Herne Bay CT6 5LH

On Herne Bay's High Street, some 6½ miles north-north-east of Canterbury, Pilgrims Hospices runs a shop staffed by volunteers, and the branch page lists books and DVDs next to clothes, toys and a large range of bric-a-brac. That page was archived in September 2026 and adds that the team is trained to point people towards bereavement support. Doors open at 9am from Monday to Saturday and stay shut on Sundays.

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Shop Herne Bay

40 High Street, Herne Bay CT6 5LH

In Herne Bay, next door to the Pilgrims Hospices shop on the High Street, this Oxfam's branch page opens with 'All yours!' and puts books and music beside the donated clothes and homewares it sells. A Wayback Machine snapshot taken in May 2026 shows the wording unchanged. Opening times aren't listed, so ring 01227 369528 before making the trip.

Charity shop (Pilgrims Hospices)

Pilgrims Hospices Faversham

117 West Street, Faversham ME13 7JB

Also in Faversham, right beside Past Sentence, the hospice's West Street branch lists toys, books and DVDs for children alongside family clothing and household bric-a-brac, so expect the shelf to lean young. Its page, in a copy kept by archive.org from September 2026, also advertises an antiques fair the shop holds on the first Sunday in every month. On ordinary weeks the doors open from Monday to Saturday only.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–4:30pmWebsite
Charity bookshop (Faversham Society)

Fleur Secondhand Bookshop

11 Preston Street, Faversham ME13 8NS

In central Faversham, beside the Fleur de Lis Museum it helps to fund, the Faversham Society's volunteer bookshop sells donated books on every subject, from antiques to world religions, and also sells through eBay, with reduced prices offered to locals. The society's September 2026 newsletter put the shop's takings at upwards of £40,000 a year and noted that children's books go for 50p. It closes at 3:30pm and never opens on Sundays, so it suits a morning visit.

Indoor boot fair

Pre Loved Market at the Alexander Centre

The Alexander Centre, 17 Preston Street, Faversham ME13 8NZ

In Faversham, inside the Alexander Centre about 60 yards from the Fleur bookshop, the venue runs an indoor boot fair with free entry; its diary, read in October 2026, gives Saturday 31 October 2026 and then 23 January, 13 February and 6 March 2027, each from 8:30am to 3pm. Stallholders book pitches online and set up from 7am, and the café is open. The listing never mentions books, so treat any boxes of paperbacks as luck.

Local sourcing tips

  • Several bookshops around Canterbury sell only new stock, so keep them for gifts: Waterstones on Rose Lane, Harbour Books on Harbour Street in Whitstable, The Little Green Bookshop on Herne Bay High Street, Chapters Coffee & Books in Sturry, and Tales on Market Street in Faversham, which shares its shop with hats. Spellbound In Sandwich opened on 15 November 2025 with new books and gifts, while Blackwell's on the University of Kent campus and the University Bookshop at Canterbury Christ Church are campus shops for new titles.
  • Three book leads have no walk-in counter. Justin Croft, the antiquarian dealer on West Street in Faversham, sees visitors by appointment only according to his ABA entry. Books2Africa, the charity at Barton Business Park on New Dover Road, takes donated books on weekdays but sells through an online shop. The Faversham Book Fair at the Alexander Centre last ran on Saturday 19 September 2026, and the venue's diary shows no later date, so watch it for 2027.
  • Car boot season is over until spring. K&T Bootfairs, in a field off Whitstable Road between Whitstable and Herne Bay, called time on 19 October 2026 because the ground had become unsafe, and Tilmanstone Boot Fair, out towards Dover, announced on Tuesday 13 October that its last fair of 2026 had been held. Both say they will be back next year, so watch the two organisers' Facebook pages for 2027 dates before driving out.
  • Plenty of Canterbury charity shops may carry a few books without saying so on any page of their own. The British Heart Foundation on St George's Street and Cancer Research UK on Burgate use their charities' standard wording, as do British Red Cross on Burgate and Shelter on Northgate, and Demelza's Burgate shop gives no stock details at all; the Preston Street Oxfam in Faversham lists books in the sentence its network uses on many shop pages. Store50, the Pilgrims shop at 50 St Peter's Street, deals in vinyl and clothing and was shut for maintenance in October 2026.
  • The city stops chain together on foot. From the St Dunstan's shop it is about 330 yards through the Westgate to the Oxfam Bookshop, another 145 to Best Lane, then roughly 270 yards to Chaucer Bookshop. Burgate Books lies about 430 yards east of Chaucer, and Catching Lives is a similar distance north-north-west up Palace Street. Further afield, the Pilgrims Media Store on Castle Street in Ashford sells books, records and DVDs, but at over 12 miles it makes a separate day out.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Canterbury?

Start with the three shelves run by charities in the centre: Catching Lives in the Crooked House, Burgate Books by the Cathedral and the St Peter's Street Oxfam Bookshop. Over in Faversham, the Fleur bookshop charges 50p for children's books, according to the Faversham Society, and nearby Past Sentence keeps a broad general second-hand stock. Chaucer Bookshop covers the scarcer end, from paperbacks up to fine bindings.

Where do I sell used books in Canterbury?

Chaucer Bookshop is a buyer of quality older and second-hand stock, but only after a call or a written description, and Past Sentence in Faversham buys as well as sells. For a mixed boxful, prop the books on a shelf with the spines outward and take one photo: BiblioScan works through that single image spine by spine and attaches a second-hand value to every book it identifies, so the keepers head for Vinted or the British eBay and Amazon marketplaces and the rest to Catching Lives or a Pilgrims Hospices shop as donations.

Which charity shops have books in Canterbury?

Three are given over to books: Catching Lives on Palace Street, Pilgrims Hospices' Burgate Books and the Oxfam Bookshop on St Peter's Street. Books also appear on the branch pages of the Best Lane Oxfam, the Age UK Canterbury shop and the St Dunstan's hospice shop. Out of town, Horsebridge Books in Whitstable and the Faversham Society's Fleur shop are book specialists, and the Pilgrims shops in Herne Bay and on West Street in Faversham, plus the Herne Bay Oxfam, list books among their general stock.

Which day is best for book hunting in Canterbury?

From Thursday to Saturday every shop above with a full weekly timetable is open, Past Sentence in Faversham included; Age UK's Saturday is the one gap in what is published. Monday and Wednesday drop only Past Sentence, and Tuesday is the same as Thursday. Sunday is thinner: in the city, Chaucer Bookshop, Catching Lives, Burgate Books and the Age UK shop trade, as does the Oxfam Bookshop by Visit Canterbury's listing, plus Horsebridge Books on the coast. The general Pilgrims shops and Fleur stay shut, and Past Sentence opens on just one Sunday a month.
