Where to buy used books in London, London

Updated 01/10/2026

London, England, the capital on the Thames rather than the Ontario city of the same name, has no single book quarter but several. Charing Cross Road and Cecil Court still carry the West End's secondhand and antiquarian trade, Bloomsbury feeds students from Marchmont Street to Museum Street, and the rest is scattered across the boroughs, from Stoke Newington and Leyton in the east to Chiswick, Kew and Kingston in the west and Brixton, Brockley and Sydenham in the south. Prices are given in pounds sterling throughout.

Charity bookshops do much of the heavy lifting. At 1 October 2026, Oxfam's shop finder listed eighteen Oxfam bookshops or books-and-music shops across the London boroughs and Epping, Amnesty International ran two London bookshops, in Hammersmith and Kentish Town, and volunteer-run House of Hodge kept going on Blackstock Road. One of those Oxfam shelves made headlines in September 2026, when a first US edition of Harper Lee's novel, given to the Portobello Road shop, ended up in the British Library.

The trade keeps moving. Sotheran's moved its shop from Mayfair to the Leicester Square end of the West End in 2025, Quinto has been selling from Leyton since June 2024, and the Osterley Bookshop in its old station building pulled back from closure in September 2025. Autumn is fair season: Etc Fairs' Bloomsbury Book Fair returns on 11 October 2026 and the ABA's Chelsea fair at the end of the month, while the Hook car boot near Epsom runs on Sundays until the end of November.

Second-hand bookshops

Skoob Books

66 The Brunswick, off Marchmont St, London WC1N 1AE

In Camden's Bloomsbury, Skoob fills a long basement unit under the Brunswick Centre, which Time Out's February 2026 guide to London bookshops likened to a secret bookworm's bunker, with a 10% student discount and a shelf kept for old orange Penguins. Londonist's 2025 map of independents calls it London's broadest selection of second-hand academic books, priced at least 50% below new, alongside a sizeable fiction section. The shop's homepage prints two slightly different timetables, one opening at 10:30am and one at 11am, both closing at 7:30pm and earlier on Sundays, so allow for either.

Second-hand bookshops

Any Amount of Books

56 Charing Cross Rd, London WC2H 0QA

At 56 Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster, Any Amount of Books keeps the street's secondhand trade going, with prices that Londonist's 2025 map put at anywhere from £1 into the thousands and a leather rebinding service at £15. On 5 September 2026 its Instagram reminded Saturday browsers that the doors stay open until 7pm, and in May 2026 it offered a £5 tote bag with any book costing £5 or more. The website has a separate page for people who want to sell.

Book market

South Bank Book Market

Queen's Walk, under Waterloo Bridge, London SE1 9PX

Under Waterloo Bridge on the Lambeth side of the river, the South Bank Book Market has traded since 2 July 1983 and became part of the Southbank Centre in 2001, which describes eight stalls running from contemporary fiction and children's books to antiquarian editions, maps, prints and postcards. Londonist's 2025 map pictures hundreds of second-hand books tucked under the bridge, open every day come rain or shine. The Centre warns that individual stalls keep their own days and hours.

Second-hand bookshops

Hurlingham Books

91 Fulham High St, London SW6 3JS

By Putney Bridge station on Fulham High Street, in Hammersmith and Fulham, Hurlingham Books is what Time Out's 2026 guide calls a chaotic vortex of secondhand literature, run since 1968 by Ray Cole and kept topped up from his warehouse nearby. FulhamSW6 reported on 18 August 2026 that the Telegraph had placed it among London's ten best independent bookshops, and a regular quoted in that piece singles out the £1 rack. Hunting for one particular title in the piles is a lost cause, Time Out warns, but prices are fair.

Second-hand bookshops

Bookmongers

439 Coldharbour Ln, London SW9 8LN

On Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, Lambeth, Bookmongers is the secondhand shop that Time Out, in its 2026 list, names a Brixton institution, which American-born Patrick Kelly opened over three decades ago and where a resident cat, Popeye, keeps watch. Londonist's 2025 map points out the mural Patrick dedicated to his late dog, Leo. The shop also sells online, with UK delivery usually within 48 hours.

Its Instagram account was posting batches of recent arrivals for the downstairs room in March 2025. Londonist's 2025 map sends students here for used academic texts in literature, film, architecture and politics.

9 Mortlake Terrace, Richmond TW9 3DT

Near Kew Gardens on Mortlake Terrace, in Richmond upon Thames, Lloyds of Kew leans towards horticulture and botanical art, with rare, vintage and antiquarian works that Londonist singled out in 2025. Time Out's 2026 guide mentions a driftwood book tree decked with ivy inside.

Local sourcing tips

  • Cecil Court, the alley between Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane, is worth walking end to end. Beyond Sotheran's and Bryars & Bryars it holds Marchpane, a rare and illustrated children's bookshop holding around 200 copies of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland by Londonist's 2025 count, and Alice Through the Looking Glass, which Londonist calls more boutique than bookshop. Goldsboro Books, also on the court, specialises in signed first editions of new titles, Time Out explains, so it is not a secondhand stop.
  • Oxfam's shop finder also showed, at 1 October 2026, further Oxfam bookshops on Camden High Street, Kentish Town Road, Heath Street in Hampstead, Highgate High Street, Park Road in Crouch End, Half Moon Lane in Herne Hill, Strutton Ground near Victoria, Wanstead High Street and Epping High Street. Several of them publish no opening times and ask you to phone. The British Heart Foundation's shop finder lists a books-and-music branch at 94 Streatham High Road.
  • Car boot season is winding down. Hayes Street Farm in Bromley ran its sales from late March, and its last 2026 date was 27 September; at 1 October 2026 the Battersea Sunday afternoon car boot described itself on Facebook as permanently closed, under a 1999–2025 banner, with a closure date written 10/8/26. Pimlico's year-round sale and Hook Road Arena's Sunday dates are the two on this page with autumn dates.
  • London's PBFA fair, the London Rare & Antiquarian Book Fair, ran on 16 and 17 May 2026, and at 1 October 2026 its calendar showed no other London fair in 2026. Its nearest autumn dates are out of town, at Sherborne on 10 October and Oxford on 17 October.
  • Three more second-hand counters for anyone nearby: Morden Hall Park, a National Trust property in Merton, keeps a second-hand bookshop in its Stableyard, open daily according to the Trust's page, and Halcyon Books on Lee High Road is a family-run secondhand shop with a cafe that also buys collections, records and postcards. Halcyon's old Greenwich shop shut in late October 2018, so ignore guides that still send you there. In Stoke Newington, the Church Street Bookshop at 142 Stoke Newington Church Street is a second-hand shop with no website of its own, as Londonist's 2025 map noted.
  • Several famous names sell new books only: Foyles on Charing Cross Road, Daunt Books, Waterstones Piccadilly, and Wimbledon Books, whose own site describes a range of new fiction and non-fiction despite a used-books label on some maps. Skip them on a sourcing run.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in London?

Start with the £1 rack at Hurlingham Books, which a regular praised in FulhamSW6's August 2026 piece, then try Crofton Books in Brockley, where Time Out put most titles at £2. Abney Books in Stoke Newington runs four books for £10, Walden prices most of its stock between 50p and £50 with cheap paperbacks outside, and Any Amount of Books starts at £1. Charity shelves round it out, from the Oxfam bookshops to the two Amnesty shops and House of Hodge.

Where do I sell used books in London?

Several shops on this page say they buy. Walden Books wants good-quality secondhand stock, Any Amount of Books has a selling page, Foster Books takes emailed photos of whole shelves, the Book & Comic Exchange in Notting Hill pays cash or exchange and does home visits, and Peter Harrington handles rare material. Abney Books takes house clearances. First, though, let BiblioScan look at the bookcase: one photo of a shelf is enough for the app to attach a probable selling price to the spines it picks out, and those numbers settle which titles you list on Vinted or Amazon.co.uk, or on eBay's UK site, and which ones travel to a shop counter.

Which day is best for book hunting in London?

Saturday. Each London shop on this list that posts its hours is open then, including Walden, which trades only from Thursday to Sunday, and Quinto, open Wednesday to Saturday; Sotheran's opens its Cecil Court shop but not the Charing Cross Road room. Sunday suits car boots and fairs, with Pimlico's weekly sale, Hook Road Arena until November and the Bloomsbury fair on 11 October 2026, but Atlantis, Sotheran's, Quinto, Archive Bookstore and Oxfam's Kingston shop stay shut. On Mondays, Walden, Quinto and Treadwell's are the ones to avoid.

Which charity shops have books in London?

Oxfam has the most. The Bloomsbury Street shop is its flagship, Upper Street in Islington and Turnham Green Terrace in Chiswick are books-and-music shops, and Portobello Road, Muswell Hill, Ealing, Greenwich, Balham and Kingston all trade as Oxfam bookshops. Amnesty International's two London bookshops are on King Street in Hammersmith and Kentish Town Road, House of Hodge on Blackstock Road gives its takings to animal welfare and literacy, and FARA runs a dedicated bookshop in Teddington.

Are there any used book fairs in London?

Yes, two this autumn. Etc Fairs' Bloomsbury Book Fair, billed as monthly, is next at the Coram Street Holiday Inn on Sunday 11 October 2026, with £4 cash entry. The ABA's Chelsea Rare Book Fair follows at Chelsea Old Town Hall on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, free on the Saturday. The PBFA's London fair took place in May 2026 and had no further London date listed at 1 October.
