Where to buy used books in Ludlow

Updated 21/10/2026

Ludlow, the south Shropshire market town built around its castle and the Buttercross, saw its Oxfam bookshop on the Bull Ring due to close in April 2025, the Shropshire Star reported. The public library on Parkway, a short stroll from the Buttercross, has a pre-loved sale in the last days of October 2026, while the other stops are spread across the villages and small towns nearby.

North up the A49, Craven Arms has a charity bookshop run by volunteers, and out west towards the Welsh border a barn on the Harley estate at Brampton Bryan, over the county line in Herefordshire, has been a second-hand bookshop for some twenty years under its previous name. South down the same road, a Sunday car boot by the A49 at Leominster runs until the end of October. All sums mentioned are in pounds sterling.

OK Diner Car Boot

Behind the garage by the OK Diner, A49, Leominster HR6 0DQ

Beside the A49 on the edge of Leominster, Herefordshire, about 9.3 miles south of Ludlow, this Sunday car boot occupies a field behind the garage next to the OK Diner, and buyers and sellers go in together from 8am. Its Facebook page counted down the last weeks of the 2026 season through October, and a post on Sunday 18 October announced that the following weekend's sale, on 25 October, would close the year. Local sourcing tips

  • The Ludlow Fine Book Fair, which its organisers describe as biennial, brought around 35 stands of bookbinders, private presses and dealers to the Clive Pavilion at Ludlow Racecourse over the weekend of 17 October 2026, Blackwell's Rare Books and Cheltenham Rare Books among the exhibitors, with antiquarian books on sale and no charge to get in. On that two-year rhythm the next fair would fall in 2028, but the fair's website gives no date for it.
  • St Michael's Hospice calls its Home & Living warehouse on Ludlow Business Park, off Orleton Road, its first charity shop in Ludlow; a Facebook post from the hospice's shops in December 2025 said it was due to open in late February 2026, and its branch page lists books, music and media alongside furniture, electricals and clothing. In Leominster, the hospice's £1 shop at 3 Victoria Street prices everything, books included, at £1 or less. Over in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, Age UK Wyvern's Market Square branch includes books in the stock list it shares with most of the charity's shops.
  • The Oxfam that remains on the Bull Ring, at number 3, sells donated clothing, accessories and homewares, its branch page says, without a word about books. The Oxfam bookshop further along the Bull Ring was due to serve its last customers on Saturday 26 April 2025, and the Shropshire Star reported that its books would be sent to other Oxfam bookshops around the country, since the second shop had no space for them.
  • Peter J. Hadley Bookseller, listed at 132 Corve Street, states on its AbeBooks profile that it has stock to view in both Ludlow and Leominster, and its ABA profile has listed Friday and Saturday opening, though no 2025-26 source confirms those hours. In Leominster, the 35 West café and bottle bar on West Street keeps more than two thousand second-hand books selected by Peter Hadley, its own website says.
  • Also in Leominster, Albion Books sells second-hand books on all subjects next to restored hand tools from a space in the Merchant's House Antiques Centre, by its own account, and it also buys books. Leominster Library, at the town's Buttercross, ran a book sale from 10 to 29 September 2026, according to Kimbolton Parish Council's events list, with the money going to library resources and events.
  • In Ludlow itself, Castle Bookshop on Castle Street sells new books, stationery and art materials, and Mod Lang, in Wood Yard off Corve Street, is a record shop that also deals in music books and posters. Ludlow Market fills Castle Square on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, plus an antiques market on the first and third Sundays of the month, though its trader directory doesn't single out a bookseller.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Ludlow?

Ludlow Library's pre-loved sale (30–31 October 2026) promises bargain prices on hundreds of donated books. Outside the sale weekend, try the Working Together bookshop in Craven Arms, or drive out to Brampton Bryan, where the barn's shelves run mostly to second-hand stock.

Where do I sell used books in Ludlow?

Elderwood Books says it will consider fiction from roughly the last ten years, good fantasy and science fiction and recent children's books, and suggests an email first if you're unsure; the Working Together bookshop accepts donations at Craven Arms or at the Rockspring Community Centre in Ludlow. Before you split a pile, photograph each shelf with BiblioScan: the app finds the spines across the frame and attaches a likely resale price to every title it can match, showing which few justify the bother of a Vinted or Amazon.co.uk listing, with eBay.co.uk as the fallback, and which belong in a bag for the charity shop.

Which day is best for book hunting in Ludlow?

Wednesday, Thursday or Friday: by their published hours, Elderwood and the Craven Arms charity bookshop are then both open for the full day. On Saturdays the Craven Arms shop shuts at 1pm, on Sundays the barn trades and, until 25 October 2026, so does the OK Diner car boot from 8am, and on Mondays and Tuesdays the barn is closed.

Which charity shops have books in Ludlow?

The Working Together shop in Craven Arms is given over to books, with jigsaws, records and maps on the side, and St Michael's Hospice includes books in the range at its Home & Living warehouse on Ludlow's business park. Oxfam's Bull Ring bookshop was scheduled to shut in spring 2025, and its other Ludlow branch lists clothes and homewares.

Are there any used book fairs in Ludlow?

The Ludlow Fine Book Fair at the racecourse took place in October 2026 and is held every two years, so the next would be due in 2028. Closer at hand, Elderwood Books hosts Sunday flea markets at Brampton Bryan, where the barn's own shelves are open while the stalls trade; the next one falls in mid-November 2026.
