The verdict in two lines
TopDollar4Books is a legitimate, long-running buyback vendor with no minimum order, a free shipping label and payment by check or PayPal. On our 10-book test it quoted only half the books and was never the top offer (closest miss: eleven cents), so treat the name as branding: compare it against BooksRun, Valore and World of Books before you ship, and skip buyback altogether for anything worth more than $30.
I build BiblioScan, a scouting app that shows buyback offers next to resale value, so read this knowing where I sit. The offers below are not mine, though: on September 3, 2026 I ran the same 10 ISBNs through BookScouter, which relays TopDollar4Books' live quote alongside 20+ other vendors, and wrote down what each one paid.
How TopDollar4Books works
- Enter the ISBN in the "Get Quote" box. If they are buying, you see "We are paying X for your book" and can add it to a buyback cart.
- Check out with your address and payment choice. There is no minimum order amount, which is rarer than it sounds: BooksRun, for example, requires $7.50.
- Print the free USPS shipping label, pack the box tightly, drop it at the post office.
- Within 36 hours of the package arriving at the post office you get a confirmation that payment has been initiated. Checks arrive in 2 to 5 business days, PayPal within 24 to 48 hours.
The company has been listed on BookScouter for years (151 vendor reviews there as of September 2026), is reported to hold a high BBB rating and to return rejected orders at its own cost. On process, it is one of the cleaner vendors in the market.
The test: 10 books, TopDollar4Books vs. the field
The books are a deliberate mix: two textbooks, a reference code, a photography book, a comics omnibus, an investing classic, a medical atlas, a 15-book paperback set. Offers in US dollars, all read on September 3, 2026:

Three things stand out. TopDollar4Books quoted 5 of 10 books, which is normal for a single vendor; BooksRun quoted all 10. On the five it quoted, it was the best offer zero times outright and tied once, on Margin of Safety, where World of Books beat it by eleven cents and everyone else was under $90. On the other four it was 32 to 63 % below the best offer: $51 against $160 on the water-testing manual, $26 against $48 on Moving the Mountain.
So is it "top dollar"? On the day, on these books, no. But that is the wrong conclusion to stop at, because the same table shows that the winner changes per book, and that all of the buyback offers, TopDollar4Books included, sit far below what the books list for.
Pros and cons
What works:
- No minimum order. You can sell one $6 book and still get a free label.
- Fast, well-documented payment: initiated within 36 hours of drop-off, PayPal or check.
- Rejected orders reportedly returned at the vendor's expense.
- Occasionally the top offer on investing and business titles, where it clearly has demand.
What does not:
- Quoted half our test books; textbooks in current editions were "not currently buying".
- Where it quoted, BooksRun and Valore usually paid 1.5x to 3x more.
- Like every buyback vendor, it prices on its own stock, not on the book's market value.
When TopDollar4Books is the right choice
The honest part
If you have two or three books to sell and the other vendors' minimums are in the way, TopDollar4Books' no-minimum policy makes it the simplest option, and its payment speed is genuinely good. It is also worth a look on finance and investing titles, where it has quoted competitively. Just do not send it a box on the strength of the name: run the ISBNs through a comparator first, because on any given book another vendor is likely to pay more.
When no buyback offer is enough
The right-hand column of the table is the one that matters. The Virginia code had a $4.03 best buyback offer and sold twelve times last year at a median of $166. Moving the Mountain: $26 from TopDollar4Books, $47.88 best offer, $1,295 median sale. Klarman's Margin of Safety: $151 against a $1,704 median, sold 43 times in twelve months. These are not exotic books; they are the kind that turn up in estate sales and thrift stores every week, and a buyback vendor is the worst possible exit for them.
The problem is knowing which books those are before you ship.
