The Best Book Buyback Sites in 2026: 10 Books, Every Vendor, One Day

Which book buyback site pays the most? We ran 10 ISBNs through every major vendor on the same day: BooksRun won 8, World of Books 2, TopDollar4Books none. Real offers, minimums, payment speed, and the point where buyback stops making sense.

The verdict in two lines

There is no single highest-paying book buyback site: on our 10-book test BooksRun had the best offer 8 times, World of Books twice, and the spread between vendors on the same book reached 40x. Use a free comparator (BookScouter) for every ISBN, and keep buyback for books under about $30, because the ten best offers added up to $544 against $4,633 in median sale prices for the same books.

I build BiblioScan, a scouting app that shows buyback offers next to resale value, so I look at these vendors every day. On September 3, 2026 I ran ten ISBNs through every buyback vendor listed on BookScouter and wrote down each offer. This is that table, plus what each site is actually good for.

The test: 10 books, every vendor, one day

A deliberate mix: two current textbooks, a reference code, a photography book, a comics omnibus, an out-of-print investing classic, a medical atlas, a fascia atlas with DVD, a memoir and a 15-book paperback set. Offers in US dollars; the last column is the median price the book actually sold for on Amazon.com over the previous 12 months, with the number of sales, per BiblioScan on the same day.

Best offer per book, combined: $543.95. Everything to BooksRun: $478.95. Everything to World of Books: $264.71, and it declined one book. The winner changed six times in ten rows, which is the whole reason a comparator exists. And even the winners are small next to the last column: the Virginia code sold twelve times last year at a median of $166 and drew a $4.03 best offer.

The best book buyback sites, ranked by what they are good at

1. BooksRun — the default

Quoted all ten books, won eight, and was within twelve cents of the winner on a ninth. Minimum order $7.50, free shipping label, offers on textbooks and technical titles that no one else matched ($160 for the water-testing manual). If you only check one vendor, check this one; better, check it through a comparator so you catch the two books where it loses.

2. World of Books (Sell Your Books) — the wildcard

Best offer on the two books it wanted (Klarman's Margin of Safety at $151.11, the DC vs Marvel omnibus at $44.94), useless on the rest ($0.32 for a $200 photography book, $3.84 for a $160 manual). It buys against its own stock needs. Free FedEx or USPS label, a minimum trade value equal to two or three books, payment by ACH or PayPal in 2 to 3 days or by check in 5 to 7. One rule to know: items that fail its condition check are recycled and cannot be returned.

3. Valore — the second opinion

Tracked BooksRun within five cents on six of the eight books it quoted, and never beat it. Useful when BooksRun declines a title or you want to split a big order across two minimums; not worth checking on its own.

4. TopDollar4Books — no minimum, fast payment

Quoted five of ten, won none, and came within eleven cents of the top once. What it has that the others lack: no minimum order at all, and payment initiated within 36 hours of the package reaching the post office, by PayPal or check. The full breakdown is in our TopDollar4Books review.

5. TextbookAgent, Empire Text, eCampus, Powell's, Comic Blessing — the specialists

Each quoted one or two books and each was competitive on exactly its niche: TextbookAgent within a dime of the omnibus winner, Empire Text $75.50 on the investing classic, Comic Blessing $5 on the comics omnibus. None of them is a site to send a whole box to; all of them are one line in a comparator result.

6. BookScouter and Bonavendi — the comparators

Neither buys books. BookScouter shows the 30+ vendors above side by side per ISBN, free; Bonavendi adds a multi-item split that assigns each book to the vendor paying most. Every number in this article came through BookScouter. If you remember one thing: never ship to a vendor without running the ISBN through one of these first. Our guide to BookScouter alternatives covers both.

When a buyback site is the right choice

The honest part

If you are clearing out your own books and want cash with minimal effort, buyback is the right tool and this list is the whole answer: run every ISBN through BookScouter, ship to whoever pays most, done. For paperbacks, old textbooks and popular non-fiction the gap between vendors is a few dollars, and the gap between buyback and resale is not worth your evenings. You do not need a scouting app for that.

When no buyback site is enough

Look at the last column again. Moving the Mountain: best offer $47.88, median sale $1,295, eleven sales in the year. Klarman: $151 against $1,704, sold 43 times. The Virginia code: $4.03 against $166. Buyback vendors buy to resell on the same marketplaces; the gap is their margin, and for any book with a real market price no buyback site closes it.

BiblioScan shows both exits on every scan: the live Amazon price, sales history over 12 months, competing offers and net profit after fees, with the buyback offers from 20+ US sites (all of the vendors above) next to them as the floor. BiblioRank sorts a batch so the books worth listing surface first, and the photo mode reads a whole shelf from one picture. The listing side is covered in where to sell used books: 21 sites compared; a single book can be checked on the free ISBN lookup without an account.

Bottom Line

Best book buyback sites, in one sentence: BooksRun by default, World of Books as a lottery ticket, TopDollar4Books when minimums are in the way, BookScouter to see all of them at once, and none of them for anything worth more than $30. Scan your first shelf with 5 free credits to sort the two piles.

FAQ

Which book buyback site pays the most?

On our September 3, 2026 test of ten books, BooksRun had the highest offer on eight and World of Books on two; TopDollar4Books, Valore and the specialist vendors won none. The winner changes per book, so the highest-paying site is whichever one a comparator like BookScouter shows at the top for that ISBN.

What is the best site to sell textbooks back?

BooksRun quoted every textbook in our test and won all of them, including $160.05 for a $344 reference manual and $50.94 for a medical textbook. Valore trailed it by cents. Check the current edition: vendors decline superseded editions outright.

Do book buyback sites pay for shipping?

Yes, all the vendors above provide a free prepaid label once you reach their minimum: $7.50 at BooksRun, about two or three books at World of Books, none at TopDollar4Books.

How fast do buyback sites pay?

TopDollar4Books initiates payment within 36 hours of the package reaching the post office; World of Books pays by ACH or PayPal in 2 to 3 days after checking the books, or by check in 5 to 7; BooksRun pays after receipt and inspection. Count on one to two weeks from drop-off to money in most cases.

Is it better to sell books yourself than to a buyback site?

For books worth more than about $30, almost always: our ten books drew $544 in best buyback offers and sold for a median of $4,633. For paperbacks and common non-fiction, no: the resale premium does not cover the time. A scouting app like BiblioScan tells you which pile each book belongs in before you ship anything.
