Where to buy used books in Wigtown

Updated 16/10/2026

Wigtown is a small town on the Machars peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway, looking out over the Cree estuary in the far south-west of Scotland. It became Scotland's National Book Town in 1998, a date Dumfries & Galloway Life gave in October 2025 and repeated in a September 2026 profile. Of the ten stops below, seven stand within about 300 yards of the County Buildings, around the broad square formed by North Main Street and South Main Street and up towards High Street and Agnew Crescent. The other three are charity shops, two in Newton Stewart and one in Creetown across the estuary. Sums of money below are in sterling.

Shop counts move about. The festival company's bookshops page talks of seventeen bookshops and book-related businesses, while its Instagram post of 15 June 2026 put the figure at 14 independent bookshops, new and second-hand together. The Association of Wigtown Booksellers keeps the town's directory and runs the Spring Book Weekend; Wigtown Festival Company, a Scottish charity, runs the autumn festival, a new-book shop called Number 26 and the second-hand Open Book.

Not every name on the directory deals in used stock. Number 26 sells new and signed titles, Foggie Toddle Books is a children's shop whose new stock sits beside some pre-loved titles, and the antique shops treat books as a sideline. Plan the day around the timetables in the entries: Byre Books trades three days a week, and the Old Bank publishes winter hours only.

Second-hand bookshops

The Book Shop

17 North Main St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9HL

The big general shop facing the square from North Main Street, which its own website bills as Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop, with roughly 100,000 books on more than a mile of shelving. Dumfries & Galloway Life reported on 25 September 2026 that Shaun Bythell was marking 25 years as owner that autumn, with a rebrand and a new shop sign in the works, and listed an underfloor model railway, a skeleton and a book shop bed among the fixtures. According to that article, his fourth volume of diaries, Return of the Bookseller Diarist, was due out on 8 October 2026. The site also sells from its own online catalogue, for anyone who cannot make the trip.

The Old Bank Bookshop

7 South Main St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9EH

Joyce and Ian's shop at the County Buildings end of South Main Street, listed by the booksellers' association with six rooms of quality second-hand books, a whole room of sheet music, and a line saying it buys books too. Its Facebook page thanked a stand-in for keeping the shop open on 13 March 2026 and showed the team getting ready for the Spring Book Weekend on 1 May 2026. The website gives winter opening as 10:30am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with occasional Sundays, mostly in December, and carries no summer timetable. In a post of 25 March 2026, the festival company named Joyce Cochrane as the person who greets each new resident of the Open Book.

Bookshop holiday rental

The Open Book

2 High St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9HQ

The shop you can rent: Wigtown Festival Company lets the flat upstairs through Airbnb, and each guest runs the second-hand bookshop below for the length of the stay, pricing and arranging the stock as they see fit. The company's post of 25 March 2026 gave the rate as £175 a night for stays of 6 to 14 nights, counted more than 550 guests since the idea launched in August 2014, and said every night was taken until the end of February 2028. For browsers, that means a different bookseller behind the counter every week or two. The company says the shop keeps a six-day week as a rule, with times set by whoever is in residence, who leaves a note on the door when stepping out.

Folklore and mythology specialist

Byre Books

24 South Main St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9EH

A converted stable set back from South Main Street, with a small garden where customers can sit, as the shop's Biblio profile describes it. The stock is second-hand and specialised: folklore and world mythology, theatre, film and television, archaeology, poetry, and books of Scottish and Gaelic interest, plus a small general section. Byre Books posted about the Spring Weekend on 30 April 2025 and about the festival on 27 September 2025. Card payments are accepted.

New Chapter Books

25 South Main St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9EH

A general shop with no specialism: fiction, mystery, romance, local history, religion, science fiction and fantasy share the shelves with a large stock of ephemera for collectors and scrapbookers, and the shop's Facebook description reads: selected new titles and second-hand books. Its website, which greets visitors with 2026 as the National Year of Reading, answers the selling question plainly: yes, but not everything, with a warning about boxes already valued on eBay and a grandmother's Reader's Digest collection. In an interview published on 24 September 2026, Dumfries & Galloway Life talked to Bre Martin, who runs it, about Kirkyard Chronicles, his book on the lives behind Galloway's gravestones, launched at that year's festival.

Second-hand bookshops

Well-Read Books of Wigtown

1-3 Agnew Crescent, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9DS

The former Grapes Bar at the top of the town, converted into a second-hand bookshop by Ruth Anderson, a retired QC, who writes that it opened on 21 September 2018, the first day of that year's festival. Its Facebook page promises thousands of second-hand books, with interesting new titles besides. A post of 26 July 2026 announced the shop open alongside Cafe Rendezvous and the Wigtown Emporium, and another, on 14 October 2026, conceded that keeping on top of the stock is a daily battle.

Children's bookshop

Foggie Toddle Books

18 North Main St, Wigtown, Newton Stewart DG8 9HL

Wigtown's children's bookshop, which stocks new books, toys and gifts but says it also carries pre-loved and vintage books for every age from babies to young adults and sells some collectable and rare titles through Etsy. A blog post of 29 September 2026 described the festival rush and a summer that stayed busy after the school holidays ended. The business publishes as well, and its list includes Kirkyard Chronicles by the town's own Bre Martin.

Newton Stewart Initiative Community Shop

Dashwood Square, Newton Stewart DG8 6EQ

In Newton Stewart, the market town at the head of the estuary and 6.3 miles from Wigtown on a north-north-west line, the local development charity runs this shop in the old Tourist Information building on Dashwood Square, open since 2017. A post on the charity's website dated 14 July 2025 lists books among the donations on sale, with crafting materials, electricals and household goods, and says 15 volunteers keep it open six days a week. Its shop page reports £6,000 passed on to local groups in 2025, and mentions a regular Freebie Friday.

Sue Ryder Newton Stewart

17 Victoria St, Newton Stewart DG8 6NH

In Newton Stewart, Sue Ryder's branch sits on Victoria Street in the middle of the busy high street, about 6.4 miles north-north-west of Wigtown's square. As archived in May 2026, Sue Ryder's Newton Stewart page lists household goods, some new stock and a good variety of books and music. It also points drivers to on-street parking and a large car park nearby.

Village charity shop

Barholm Community Shop

Barholm Centre, St John St, Creetown, Newton Stewart DG8 7JE

In Creetown, on the far shore of the Cree estuary roughly three miles north-east of Wigtown as the crow flies, this shop occupies a room behind the Barholm Centre, and village groups take turns staffing it. Creetown Initiative's web page on the shop includes books in the donated stock, with clothes, toys and DVDs, and the proceeds are returned to those groups. Opening days vary: on Wednesday 14 October 2026 its Facebook page promised a 10am to 1pm opening that day, while the 2019 Initiative page and the Barholm Centre's own page both give 10am to 2pm on Fridays and Saturdays, the latter adding that Facebook carries current times.

Local sourcing tips

  • Wigtown Book Festival is a ten-day programme of talks, readings and new books rather than a second-hand market; its 2026 edition ran from 25 September to 4 October. Wigtown Festival Company sells new and signed titles at Number 26 on South Main Street and opens a temporary festival shop each autumn. During the 2026 festival, Shaun Bythell and Ben Please of The Bookshop Band were billed to lead guided Bookshops and Back Stories walks round the shops, according to Dumfries & Galloway Life.
  • The Spring Book Weekend is the booksellers' own event, organised by the Association of Wigtown Booksellers. The 2026 weekend ran from 2 to 4 May, after a 2025 edition from 3 to 5 May, with author talks, guided walks and workshops on the programme. Treat it as a literary weekend, not a book fair.
  • ReadingLasses on South Main Street is a café and bookshop stocked entirely with women authors, around 10,000 books according to Dumfries & Galloway Life, which marked Jacqui Robertson's tenth year as owner in October 2025. Its sections run from art, travel and science to 18th and 19th-century women writers, but the shop does not describe that stock as second-hand in its own listings.
  • Two antique shops keep books among the bric-a-brac. Faodail on North Main Street lists Scottish antiques, jewellery and books on its website and has priced rare first editions there, while the Wigtown Emporium on High Street describes a small selection of vintage poetry, philosophy, fiction and non-fiction. Both are worth a look for older titles, though neither is a bookshop first.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I sell used books in Wigtown?

New Chapter Books says it buys, selectively, and the booksellers' association lists the Old Bank Bookshop as a buyer too, so ring or email before arriving with boxes. Worth doing at the kitchen table beforehand: line up the collection, take one picture with BiblioScan, and read the resale estimate it returns for each spine. High scorers are yours to list, whether that means Vinted, eBay.co.uk or an Amazon.co.uk seller account; low scorers fill the box you drive to the shops.

Which day is best for book hunting in Wigtown?

Wednesday or Saturday. On both, The Book Shop, Byre Books and the two Newton Stewart charity shops all trade by their own published timetables: The Book Shop and both Newton Stewart shops run Monday to Saturday, and Byre Books opens on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Sunday is thinner: Byre Books opens, the Old Bank only on occasional Sundays, and the shops with no published timetable are worth checking on Facebook first; Well-Read Books, for one, posted that it was open on Sunday 26 July 2026. Avoid Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays if Byre Books is on your list.

Which charity shops have books in Wigtown?

Wigtown itself has no charity shop among these entries; the Open Book comes closest, since the festival company says it contributes around £10,000 a year to its charitable work. For a proper charity-shop rummage, head six miles north to Newton Stewart, where the Initiative shop on Dashwood Square lists books among its donations and Sue Ryder on Victoria Street keeps books and music, or go across the estuary to the Barholm Community Shop in Creetown, whose opening days change, so check its Facebook page.

Are there any used book fairs in Wigtown?

Neither of the town's two big dates is billed as a second-hand fair. The autumn festival, whose 2026 edition closed on 4 October, centres on talks and new books, and the Spring Book Weekend, held from 2 to 4 May 2026, is a programme of events run by the booksellers.
