Where to buy used books in Huddersfield

Updated 01/10/2026

Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, rewards the book hunter who is willing to leave the ring road behind. Holmfirth, five miles south in the Holme Valley, has a long-established second-hand bookshop and an Oxfam books and music shop roughly 150 yards apart; Paddock, west of the centre towards Milnsbridge, hides a railway book specialist with a three-day week; and Cleckheaton and Dewsbury, six to eight miles to the north-east, add a charity shop with a large book department and a car boot every Sunday. All of these sit within Kirklees, and the currency throughout is the pound sterling.

Closer in, the Oxfam on Colne Road, a short walk south of the centre, mixes shelves of books with furniture and electricals; on New Street, Forget Me Not Children's Hospice opened a charity shop in August 2025 whose launch coverage counted books in its range; and the open market moved into a temporary home beside Brook Street in August 2026 as the Victorian hall closed for restoration. Across the Calderdale boundary, Halifax's Borough Market, about six miles to the north-north-west, added a self-serve stall of second-hand books at a pound each in May 2025, and Brames Books sells pre-loved titles a few minutes' walk away on Silver Street.

Plan the week around the specialists. The Paddock railway shop opens only from Tuesday to Thursday, the market's second-hand traders come on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and Sunday is the day for Dewsbury's car boot followed by an afternoon in Holmfirth.

Second-hand bookshop

Daisy Lane Books

15 Towngate, Holmfirth HD9 1HA

In Holmfirth, 5.3 miles south of Huddersfield up the Holme Valley, this bookshop has its door on Towngate. A reel posted on 12 June 2025 by indie_hudds, the Instagram guide to Huddersfield and Holmfirth, said the shop had been trading for 35 years with thousands of books tucked into every nook and cranny. That post put the opening at 10am to 4pm, seven days a week, and told visitors to bring some cash, while YorkshireLive, writing about Holmfirth on 23 March 2026, described shelves stacked with second-hand novels, some of them just £1.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Holmfirth

Unit 2, 71a Huddersfield Rd, Holmfirth HD9 3AZ

Also in Holmfirth, a short stroll from Daisy Lane Books, Oxfam runs one of its dedicated books and music shops on Huddersfield Road. Oxfam's listing for the branch, in a Wayback Machine copy from April 2026, sets maps, children's games, jigsaws, CDs, DVDs and vinyl beside the books, and says the shop accepts donations of books and music. The same page gives a seven-day week, with shorter hours on Sundays.

Railway book specialist

Nick Tozer Railway Books

155 Church St, Paddock, Huddersfield HD1 4UJ

In Paddock, 1.2 miles west of the town centre, this dealer in out-of-print railway books and magazines has traded since 1997 by its own AbeBooks profile, and its website invites mail-order customers to come and browse thousands of titles on more than 300 feet of shelving. The site, as archived in April 2026, opens the shop on Tuesdays and Wednesdays plus a Thursday afternoon and evening, and says it buys anything from a single railway book to a whole collection. On 4 March 2025 the owner told the shop's Facebook followers that his 2025/26 business rates had climbed to 240% of the previous year's bill and that, with electricity on top, he wasn't sure how long he could keep the doors open, so ring 01484 518159 before making a special trip.

Second-hand bookshops

Self-serve £1 book stall

Halifax Borough Market Self-Serve Bookshop

Halifax Borough Market, 19 Albion St, Halifax HX1 1DU

Over the Calderdale boundary in Halifax, six miles north-north-west of Huddersfield, the Victorian Borough Market made room for a self-service bookshop among its stalls. Calderdale's market team introduced it on Friday 9 May 2025 as a new self-serve stall opposite Ronnie's, selling a wide selection of second-hand books at £1 each. The council's market page doesn't mention it, so if it isn't where the 2025 post placed it, ask at the market office on 01422 393584.

Second-hand bookshop

Brames Books

The Old Bank, 2 Silver Street, Halifax HX1 1HS

In Halifax, over in Calderdale and 6.2 miles from Huddersfield, Brames Books keeps its shelves in the Old Bank on Silver Street, roughly 200 yards from the Borough Market. Its Facebook page, Brames Books Online, posted on the evening of 25 July 2025 that the titles in its photos were for sale on Vinted, with books going daily, and that shoppers could pick them up in store and skip the postage. Ask through that page before a special journey.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Cleckheaton

8 Northgate, Cleckheaton BD19 5AA

In Cleckheaton, six miles north-north-east of Huddersfield in the Spen Valley, this Oxfam on Northgate advertises a large book department of fiction, non-fiction and collectable titles. The copy of its Oxfam page that the Wayback Machine stored on 17 April 2026 puts those books beside designer clothing, bric-a-brac and a music section with rare vinyl. Oxfam's page leaves the opening hours blank and gives a phone number instead, 01274 876980.

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Colne Road

9 Colne Rd, Huddersfield HD1 3ER

Half a mile south of the centre, in the Folly Hall area, Oxfam's Colne Road branch is a general shop in which books are one department among furniture and electrical goods. Its page on Oxfam's site, as archived in May 2026, lists clothing, homewares, books, music and linens next to the larger items, so expect a book section rather than a bookshop. There are no posted hours, and the page simply says to contact the shop on 01484 431563.

Charity shop (Forget Me Not)

Forget Me Not Children's Hospice, Huddersfield Centre

Unit 1, 49-57 New Street, Huddersfield HD1 2BQ

Opposite Merrie England on New Street, at the core of the town, the Brackenhall children's hospice opened its 15th charity shop at 11am on Saturday 9 August 2025. Huddersfield Hub, previewing the launch on 29 July 2025, said the shop would offer pre-loved clothing, books, toys and homeware, whereas the hospice's own page for the branch talks of furniture, household goods, clothing, toys and accessories without naming books. That page also reserves the first half-hour of each weekday and Saturday, 9am to 9:30am, for donations only.

Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

Dewsbury Rams Trust Car Boot Sale

Dewsbury Rams stadium, Owl Ln, Dewsbury WF12 7RH

In Dewsbury, about eight miles east-north-east of Huddersfield, the rugby league club's ground is home to a Sunday car boot which, by the club's own website, runs all year round, bank holiday weekends included, and ranks among the area's most popular. On Saturday 26 September 2026 the organiser's Facebook page forecast a dry morning for the next day's sale, with the gates opening for everyone at 6am and plenty of sellers still pulling in around 7:30. The website lists 6am to noon while the organiser's Facebook posts close at 11:55am, the introduction on that Facebook page says entry costs buyers nothing, and none of the posts from August and September 2026 mentions books.

Local sourcing tips

  • Huddersfield's open market moved on 13 August 2026 into a temporary site between the Brook Street hall and the Tesco car park, which the BBC said would serve traders for nearly 18 months while the 1888 hall is restored. Kirklees Council keeps the second-hand markets there on Tuesdays and Saturdays and pitches them at collectors, antique dealers and bargain hunters, but names no book stalls, so go expecting bric-a-brac first and books by chance.
  • Not every bookshop nearby sells used stock. Read. on Huddersfield Road in Holmfirth opened in February 2019 as a new-book shop, as its owners told New Writing North; A New Leaf in Slaithwaite and Marsden pairs a curated range of new titles with a café; and Brighouse Books, just inside Calderdale, posts about new releases and a 2 for £5 fiction table.
  • The Huddersfield Car Boot Sale at the John Smith's Stadium is no sure thing. The Examiner reported on 17 April 2025 that the Sunday sale hadn't run at all that year because the organisers were still waiting for the stadium to give permission, so check their Facebook page before loading the car. The Dewsbury Rams sale advertises itself as an every-Sunday fixture.
  • No PBFA book fair is booked in Kirklees or Calderdale for 2026. The association's printed list put the nearest at Ilkley on 24 and 25 July and York's national fair on 11 and 12 September, both over by 1 October, and its next date in the north of England is Yarm, near Stockton-on-Tees, on Sunday 8 November 2026.
  • Books cost nothing at GET Free Books Dewsbury, whose Facebook page gives its address as 23 Princess of Wales Precinct and describes a mission to make reading free and available to all; the page was still posting on 5 January 2026, so look there for the days it opens.
  • Elaine Lonsdale Books, based in Golcar, has no counter to visit: its Facebook page says it has sold books, magazines and ephemera at Hemswell Antiques Centre in Lincolnshire for more than 30 years, and the rest of the stock goes through an eBay shop.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Huddersfield?

The flat-price option is in Halifax, where the Borough Market's self-serve stall launched in May 2025 with every second-hand book at £1, and Daisy Lane Books in Holmfirth had some novels at that price in March 2026, according to YorkshireLive. Closer to home, the three Oxfam branches each carry books, with Holmfirth's branch built around books and records and Cleckheaton advertising a large department. On Sundays, the Dewsbury Rams car boot lets buyers in free, its Facebook page says, although the organiser's posts for August and September 2026 don't mention books, so bargains there depend on who turns up.

Where do I sell used books in Huddersfield?

Railway titles have a ready buyer in Paddock, since Nick Tozer's website says he'll take anything from one book to an entire collection. Everything else is easiest online, through eBay.co.uk, Vinted, Amazon.co.uk or the sell-back side of World of Books, and Oxfam's Holmfirth branch takes book and music donations. Snap your shelf in BiblioScan first and the app prices the spines in that photo one by one, pinning an estimated resale figure on every book, so the railway hardbacks worth a listing stand apart from the paperbacks bound for a charity bag.

Which day is best for book hunting in Huddersfield?

Tuesday covers the most ground: the railway shop in Paddock is open, the market's second-hand traders are trading in the temporary site, the New Street hospice shop and both Holmfirth shops are open and Halifax's market hall is running. Thursday works for a later start, as Nick Tozer stays open until 8pm. Sunday suits an early drive to the Dewsbury car boot followed by Holmfirth, whose Oxfam shop keeps shorter Sunday hours, but the Halifax market is shut that day and the Paddock shop is closed from Friday to Monday.

Which charity shops have books in Huddersfield?

Mostly Oxfam's. The Holmfirth branch is one of Oxfam's specialist book and music shops, the Cleckheaton branch on Northgate describes its own large book department, and the Colne Road shop near the centre lists books among its furniture, clothing and homewares. Call Cleckheaton or Colne Road before travelling, as Oxfam publishes no hours for either. The exception sits in the town centre: the Forget Me Not hospice shop on New Street, which local news previewed in July 2025 with books on its list, trades seven days, Sundays from 10am.
