Where to buy used books in Barnsley

Updated 01/10/2026

Barnsley, the South Yorkshire market town, splits its secondhand books between two very different settings. Four sit in the town centre, a short stroll apart: Foster's Little Book Shop at number 48 in the Victorian Arcade, Mike's Famous Bookstall upstairs in the market inside the Glass Works, the RSPCA charity shop on Market Street and Age UK Barnsley's VINTage UK on Eldon Street. The rest are spread across the borough and are easier by car: the RSPCA branch's second shop in Wombwell, the Barnsley Hospice superstore on a trading estate at Dodworth, a donated-book room inside the garden walls of Cannon Hall near Cawthorne, the antiques centre at Elsecar and a community car boot at Hoyland. All amounts are sterling.

Selling locally is mostly a matter of swapping or giving. Mike's stall will take read paperbacks under a half-back offer, while the hospice, Age UK Barnsley, the RSPCA branch and the museums trust behind the Cannon Hall shop all take donated books and sell them to fund their work. Copies worth real money earn more when you list them online under your own name.

A few names cause confusion. The Book Vault on Market Street, which the BBC profiled in April 2026 as one of the Booksellers Association's Bookshop Champions, sells new titles. Foster's has a sister shop in Ossett, opened in June 2025, but Ossett is in the Wakefield district rather than Barnsley. And the Hospice Retail Hub changed units on its Dodworth estate in summer 2026, so an older listing may point you at the wrong door.

New and secondhand bookshop

Foster's Little Book Shop

48 The Arcade, Barnsley S70 2QN

A small family shop in the Victorian Arcade, opened in February 2023, whose shelves mix new and secondhand stock sorted by genre, with used copies starting at £1 and each book priced on its own. The owners' About page records a second branch at 3 Bank Street in Ossett from June 2025, which belongs to the Wakefield district rather than to this town. Online, the shop runs a vintage, antique and first-edition section and a 3 for £10 paperback deal, and a bindery attached to the business quotes for repairs to family bibles and other tired volumes. A ticketed Quiet Reading Club keeps the shop open after hours in the last week of each month, at £2.50 a head, with tickets released at 7pm on the 1st.

Market bookstall

Mike's Famous Bookstall & Cards

Unit 45-46, First Floor, The Glass Works, Barnsley S70 1GW

A book and card stall on the first floor of Barnsley Market in the Glass Works, run by an independent firm that says it began in 1983 and also trades in the Rotherham and Mexborough indoor markets. Its own site states that a range of secondhand books sits beside the new titles, and the market's tenant page names Mills & Boon, sagas, crime fiction, historical novels, war, railway and true crime as the strongest sellers, along with books about Barnsley itself. That tenant page also advertises a "half back" exchange on paperbacks, worth asking about before you carry a bag of read copies upstairs. On 16 November 2025 the stall's Instagram announced a pop-up visit by the novelist Milly Johnson for Saturday 22 November.

Charity superstore (Barnsley Hospice)

Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub

Unit 1, Fall Bank Industrial Estate, Dodworth, Barnsley S75 3LS

Out at Dodworth, about two miles west-southwest of the centre, Barnsley Hospice sells donated goods from a charity superstore where you can pull the car up to the shutters. A hospice news item of 24 July 2026 announced the move from Unit 16, its home since December 2020, to Unit 1 on the same estate, together with seven-day opening and a range that still includes books alongside clothing, homeware and furniture. Its donations page lists books among the things it accepts, and some stock is sold through the hospice's eBay and Vinted accounts instead of on the floor. In October 2025 the hospice reported that the Hub had won the Yorkshire and the Humber title in the UK's Favourite Charity Shop Awards after a public vote.

Museum charity bookshop

Cannon Hall Pre-Loved Bookshop

Walled Garden, Cannon Hall, Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley S75 4AT

Near Cawthorne, roughly four and a half miles west-northwest of the town, Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust runs a room of donated books in the walled garden at Cannon Hall. The trust wrote on 15 January 2026 that the shop had reopened the previous October and sold so briskly over Christmas that shelves were thinning, with crime novels, thrillers and general fiction selling quickest. A further post on 1 October 2026 put its takings at around £4,500 a year and invited local firms to become Bookshop Buddies by collecting books for it. The Cannon Hall visitor page says the park and gardens open throughout the day, seven days a week, and charges £1 for two hours in the car park.

Charity shops

Charity shop (RSPCA)

RSPCA Barnsley & District charity shop

14 Market Street, Barnsley S70 1SL

A Market Street charity shop belonging to the RSPCA Barnsley & District branch, a separately registered charity that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes animals across the borough. The branch's page on rspca.org.uk includes books among the things the branch says it is always in need of, next to discs and bric-a-brac. Opening times differ between the two branch pages: rspca.org.uk gives a six-day week, Monday to Saturday, of 9am to 5pm, whereas the branch website, unchanged in a March 2026 Wayback Machine capture, gives 9:30am to 4pm with Thursday closed outside bank-holiday weeks.

Charity shop (Age UK Barnsley)

VINTage UK Barnsley

31-33 Eldon Street, Barnsley S70 2JJ

Age UK Barnsley, which works for older people in the borough, sells donated goods from this Eldon Street shop, roughly 0.2 miles east-northeast of the town centre. Books and music appear in the stock rundown on the charity's shop page, next to furniture, homeware, bags, shoes and clothing, and an October 2025 Wayback Machine snapshot of that page had books listed already. Give donations to the staff inside rather than at the door, because anything left on the pavement after hours may be removed by street cleaners. For furniture and other large pieces, the charity arranges a collection once you email it photos.

Charity shop (RSPCA)

RSPCA Barnsley & District charity shop, Wombwell

45 High Street, Wombwell, Barnsley S73 8HB

In Wombwell, a town in the borough about four miles east-southeast of Barnsley centre, the RSPCA Barnsley & District branch runs its second shop from the High Street address it also gives as its postal one. The rspca.org.uk page for the branch names this shop alongside the Market Street one and counts books among the donations it keeps asking for. On the branch's own contact page, as archived by the Wayback Machine in March 2026, Wombwell trades Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm, closing at 3:30pm on Thursdays, while rspca.org.uk quotes 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, for the branch. Donations can be left in the loading bay outside the door.

Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

MyHoyland Car Boot & Craft Fayre

The Hoyland Hub, The Parade, Clough Fields Road, Hoyland, Barnsley S74 0HR

In Hoyland, a little over four miles south-southeast of the town centre, the community group MyHoyland holds a car boot and craft fayre at the Hoyland Hub, on the same property as the Hoyland Tap pub, whose closure was announced in January 2025. MyHoyland's announcement of 16 April 2026 fixed the pattern as every month's final Sunday from April, with pitches at £10 or £5 for charities, and its online booking page offered Sunday 30 August and Sunday 27 September, each running 10am to 2pm with sellers allowed in an hour early. Neither the announcement nor the booking page mentions books, so whatever turns up depends on who is selling that Sunday.

Antiques centre

Elsecar Antiques Centre

Building 18, Elsecar Heritage Centre, Wath Road, Elsecar, Barnsley S74 8HJ

At Elsecar, close to five miles south-southeast of the centre, Building 18 on the heritage site holds an antiques centre whose website counts more than 120 dealers and names books in its stock list next to ceramics, jewellery and sporting memorabilia. The site does not say which cabinets carry them, so plan on a slow walk round rather than a quick look. Its news page announces an antiques and collectables fair in the Ironworks for Sunday 11 October 2026; trade buyers get in at 9am for £2.50 and the public from 10am for £2, though nothing there promises books.

Local sourcing tips

  • Barnsley Libraries revived the Barnsley Book Sale for two days, 27 February (a Friday) and 28 February 2026, on the ground floor of Library @ the Lightbox. The council's event page asked buyers to bring a bag and warned that only cards would be taken. By early October 2026 the council had announced no further date, so its events listings are the place to watch for a repeat.
  • The bookseller Mrs Books has stand 119/120 inside Harrisons Antiques Centre on Lidget Lane in Thurnscoe, toward the eastern edge of the borough. Videos the dealer posted in June 2025 showed Brontë volumes, early Rupert bear annuals, folio volumes and antiquarian stock arriving on the stand, and both the dealer and the centre say Harrisons opens seven days a week.
  • Age UK Barnsley's smaller shop, Little VINTage UK on Barnsley Road in Cudworth, lists books and music among its stock as well, as it already did in a Wayback Machine capture of May 2026. Its page lists opening from Monday to Saturday.
  • New stock only, and no help with secondhand finds: The Book Vault, which the BBC dates to 2019.
  • Plan around the closing days. The market, and with it Mike's stall, shuts on Sundays; the RSPCA branch site keeps its Market Street shop closed on Thursdays and lists no Monday or Sunday trading in Wombwell. Sunday still leaves the Age UK shop on Eldon Street, the Hospice Retail Hub, the Elsecar dealers and the Cannon Hall gardens, and on a month-end Sunday the Hoyland boot sale when MyHoyland has a date on its booking page.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Barnsley?

Foster's, tucked into the Victorian Arcade, starts its secondhand copies at £1 and runs a 3 for £10 paperback offer online. The charities are the other cheap route: the Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub at Dodworth sells donated books seven days a week, VINTage UK on Eldon Street and the two RSPCA shops resell what local people give them, and the walled-garden bookshop at Cannon Hall sells nothing but donated books for Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust.

Where do I sell used books in Barnsley?

Nowhere in this guide publishes a cash buying counter. Mike's Famous Bookstall in the market swaps paperbacks on a half-back basis, and donations go to Age UK Barnsley, the hospice, the RSPCA shops or the Cannon Hall bookshop. For anything worth money, selling it yourself reaches buyers directly, through Amazon.co.uk, through eBay.co.uk, or through Vinted for cheaper paperbacks, and World of Books runs an online selling service with free shipping. Before you bag a shelf up, photograph it with BiblioScan: the app recognises the spines in that one shot and gives each title a separate resale estimate, which singles out the copies that deserve a sale of their own.

Which day is best for book hunting in Barnsley?

Saturday is the fullest day: the market with Mike's stall, both RSPCA shops, VINTage UK, the Hospice Retail Hub, Elsecar and the Cannon Hall gardens are all open. Sunday drops the market and the two RSPCA shops but keeps Eldon Street, Dodworth, Elsecar and Cannon Hall, plus the Hoyland car boot on a month's last Sunday whenever MyHoyland lists a date. The branch website shuts the Market Street RSPCA shop on Thursdays and opens Wombwell from Tuesday only.

Which charity shops have books in Barnsley?

Four charities in the borough say so on their own pages. Barnsley Hospice counts books in the pre-loved range at its Retail Hub in Dodworth, Age UK Barnsley lists books and music at both its VINTage shops, the RSPCA Barnsley & District branch asks for book donations for its shops on Market Street and in Wombwell, and Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust stocks the Cannon Hall garden bookshop entirely from donations.
