The Friends of the Worcester Public Library, a group founded in 1956 to campaign for a new main building, run it, and members take 20 percent off anything they buy. The library bills the September sale as the biggest of the group's year, and its own event listing puts it in the same building on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 10am until 4pm, then Saturday, September 26 from 10am until 2pm, with adult, children's and teen books on the tables. It runs on its own short clock rather than the library's, opening for browsing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings, with the Saturday cut to 12:30pm over the summer. Donations are accepted on Mondays between 1pm and 4pm and never on another day. Read the library's 2026 holiday list first, since the building shuts for a dozen town holidays across the year and the Book Cellar goes dark with it.
