Where to buy used books in West Palm Beach

Updated 10/21/2026

West Palm Beach, Florida keeps very little secondhand print inside its own downtown, so the hunt spreads along the coast in four short hops. In the city itself, the Saturday antiques market fills two blocks of Clematis Street within sight of City Hall, and Past Present Future works its comic back issues 3.7 miles west on North Military Trail. Over the bridges on the island of Palm Beach, Raptis Rare Books on Worth Avenue and the Church Mouse on South County Road stand 0.2 miles apart, roughly 1.2 miles from Clematis. North Palm Beach holds the Book Exchange on Northlake Boulevard and the village library on Anchorage Drive, under a mile apart and about 6.6 miles up the coast, while Lake Worth Beach, just under 7 miles south, adds Retrohouse Comics on Lake Avenue.

Expect a lopsided mix on this stretch of coast. Three of the seven sell comics and one is a Worth Avenue antiquarian dealing in fine first editions; general secondhand stock is concentrated at the Book Exchange, on the Church Mouse's resale floor and at the North Palm Beach library sale. Several entries also run to a calendar instead of a plain week, from the Clematis Street market's October-to-May season to a library sale held once a year, so check the date as well as the address.

Older lists of Palm Beach County bookshops trip people up in a few places. The Book Cellar, which sat at 801 Lake Ave in Lake Worth Beach, closed in March 2020, and Shelf Awareness reported in September 2022 that The Dancing Elephant had moved into that space carrying the stock of Rainbow Bridge, a West Palm Beach New Age store that had run for decades. Spandgg Book Shop on Lucerne Avenue still shows up in older listings, but as of October 21, 2026 its Instagram profile reads only "Closed".

Used books and comics

Book Exchange & Comic Shop

807 Northlake Blvd, North Palm Beach, FL 33408

In North Palm Beach, 6.6 miles north of City Hall on Northlake Boulevard, a shop whose Instagram bio dates it to 1988 and whose Facebook intro, rewritten on July 28, 2026, promises quality used hardcovers and paperbacks at half price, plus new and used comics, manga and toys. Stock keeps moving: a Valentine's weekend sale posted on February 13, 2026 took 25 percent off romance novels and DVDs, and on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 the Instagram account logged "another great haul" of books, Disney records and CDs. The schedule above is the shop's own, from Facebook posts in October and December 2024 that set Monday to Saturday at 10 to 6:30 and brought Sundays back at noon to 4; there is no website, so check that page before driving over.

Rare and antiquarian books

Raptis Rare Books

329 Worth Ave, Palm Beach, FL 33480

Across the lagoon in the town of Palm Beach, 1.3 miles from City Hall, Matthew and Adrienne Raptis run an antiquarian shop on Worth Avenue, at No. 329 after an earlier spell at No. 226, dealing in fine first editions, signed and inscribed copies and landmark titles in every field. FIU's Caplin News, in a county bookstore roundup published March 10, 2026, described two floors of stock with a 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle on display and prices into the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Come to study points and bindings rather than to source: anyone with a book to offer is asked to send images by email, fax or the consignment form, and the shop does not generally appraise.

Church resale shop

The Church Mouse

378 S County Rd, Palm Beach, FL 33480

Up South County Road in Palm Beach, 0.2 miles from Raptis, the resale shop of the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, whose page for the shop puts books on a list with designer clothing, furniture, crystal and china across more than 4,500 square feet, staffed mostly by volunteers. It closes over the summer, and the Palm Beach Daily News reported on August 15, 2025 that it was set to reopen early for the season; on October 19, 2026 its Instagram announced a 25-percent-off sale set for Friday and Saturday, October 30 and 31, and a welcome-back event to follow on Monday, November 2. Donated books go in through the donor door, on the building's south face nearest TD Bank, and the takings fund most of the parish's outreach.

Past Present Future Comics

1387 N Military Trl, West Palm Beach, FL 33409

Out on North Military Trail, 3.7 miles west of downtown, the West Palm Beach half of a two-store South Florida chain whose other branch is in Davie and which says it has been selling for nearly 45 years. Its site claims the region's largest run of Golden Age comics and Silver Age key issues beside the new weeklies, role-playing games, toys and Gundam kits, and was posting picks of the week dated October 21, 2026. Collections are bought outright, with an on-the-spot offer payable as cash or store credit, while the staff will come to you when the boxes are too many to carry in; the store line is 561-697-2554.

Retrohouse Comics

508 Lake Ave, Suite A, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460

Down in Lake Worth Beach, 6.8 miles below City Hall, a storefront on the downtown strip of Lake Avenue that lists Golden Age and Silver Age comics, back issues and new releases, with CGC grading submissions and in-house pressing for anyone chasing a higher slab. Its own page has added disc resurfacing, so scratched DVDs, Blu-rays and game discs can be restored while you browse. Its Instagram is where schedule changes appear, as on Saturday, October 10, 2026, when the shop closed at 3pm to prepare for Collecterfest at the American Polish club the following day.

Flea markets

Saturday antiques and flea market

West Palm Beach Antique & Flea Market

300 Clematis St, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

On the 300 and 400 blocks of Clematis Street, about 280 yards from City Hall, a family-run outdoor market whose organizers count more than 100 vendors every Saturday morning from October through May. What they advertise is antiques, vintage goods, art and crafts; books never appear in that list, so a paperback table is a bonus to stumble on, not a reason to set an alarm. Downtown WPB Arts carried the October 10, 2026 market on its calendar with free admission, so the new season is already running.

Friends of the North Palm Beach Library Book Sale

North Palm Beach Library, 303 Anchorage Dr, North Palm Beach, FL 33408

In North Palm Beach, 0.9 miles east of the Book Exchange, the Friends of the village library run a sale they describe as annual, and the Village calendar booked the 2026 round into the Thelma Obert Room from Tuesday, January 27 to Saturday, January 31, after a members-only preview on Monday the 26th. Books started at a quarter that week, and on the closing Saturday every item dropped to a dime. The sale page still carries the 2024 edition's dates and price list (hardcovers $2, paperbacks 50 cents or five for $2), so the village calendar, not that page, is where a 2027 date would appear. Membership, which is what buys the early look, starts at $20 a year.

Hours: Last documented: January 27–29, 2026, 9am–6pm; January 30–31, 2026, from 9am, closing 4pm SaturdayWebsite

Local sourcing tips

  • Selling here splits three ways. Comics and collectibles go to Past Present Future on Military Trail, which pays cash or credit on the spot, or to the Book Exchange in North Palm Beach, which bills itself on Instagram as buying and selling comics and manga. Genuinely scarce books, such as true firsts or inscribed copies, go to Raptis as photographs, never as a walk-in. For ordinary paperbacks, the Book Exchange is the place to ask: a Facebook post of July 15, 2024 offered store credit for books it can use, depending on condition, demand and how many it already holds; otherwise they become gifts, either at the Church Mouse donor door or at any Palm Beach County library branch, where the Friends refuse textbooks, encyclopedias, yearbooks, Reader's Digest books and hardcovers missing their jackets.
  • For cheap reading rather than resale stock, look at the library groups and at Lake Worth Beach's book boxes. The North Palm Beach Friends' annual sale ran in late January in 2026, and the countywide Friends group gathers donations at every branch for sales announced on the county events calendar. In Lake Worth Beach, the Friends of the municipal library describe themselves on their 2026 website as the governing board of an award-winning citywide Little Free Library program. The Cultural Council wrote in 2022 that the same Friends ran The Friendly Little Book Shop in the City Hall annex off Lucerne Avenue, but their current website never mentions it, so ask on their Facebook page before going.
  • Plan around closed days, since the shops keep different weeks. Retrohouse on Lake Avenue opens from Wednesday through Sunday only, so a Lake Worth Beach run waits until midweek. On the island, Raptis and the Church Mouse share a Monday-to-Saturday schedule 0.2 miles apart, which makes Saturday the natural day: Clematis Street's market first, then 1.2 miles across the bridge before either island shop shuts at five. Sunday is the Book Exchange's short afternoon, from noon until four.
  • Two book addresses sit just outside this list. On Lake Avenue, 0.2 miles west of Retrohouse, The Dancing Elephant is a metaphysical bookstore that Shelf Awareness found in September 2022 to be more than 90 percent new stock; its secondhand side is a rare-books arm selling first editions and esoterica through its web shop and Instagram, and its own FAQ rules out buying secondhand copies, though it takes donations on the subjects it sells. South of Lantana, the Boynton Beach City Library at 100 East Ocean Avenue houses a bookstore run by the library's Friends that the city describes as open all year, just over 20 km from West Palm Beach City Hall and so beyond this page.
  • The Society of the Four Arts' King Library last listed a standalone public book sale for November 6, 2021; the book sale held on November 7, 2025, in the Palm Beach Daily News account, was one part of the King Fling, a fundraiser combining a garden party, wine tasting, auction and Dixieland concert. Treat that as an evening out rather than a sourcing trip. Further afield, Jupiter, some 15 miles up the coast, makes a separate trip, and the Sunshine Flea Market on South Military Trail advertises 300-plus indoor vendors without saying anything about print.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in West Palm Beach?

Wait for the library sale if you can: the North Palm Beach Friends held their 2026 sale in late January and priced it to clear the tables by the final day. The rest of the time, the Church Mouse resale shop in Palm Beach mixes donated books into its resale floor on a Monday-to-Saturday week, while the Northlake Boulevard Book Exchange is the one general used bookstore on this page, stocking old and new books beside the comics. Retrohouse in Lake Worth Beach is better for browsing than bargains, since it deals in graded and back-issue comics.

Where do I sell used books in West Palm Beach?

That turns on what you are carrying. Comics, manga and collectibles fetch cash or credit at Past Present Future on North Military Trail, where a big enough lot gets a house call, and the Book Exchange buys comics over its own counter and gives credit on books it can resell. Rare books and true first editions go to Raptis as photos sent by email, fax or form, with no routine appraisals. A crate of general titles deserves sorting at home first: snap the shelf with the BiblioScan app, and every spine it recognizes comes back with a resale price; pull the few worth listing online before giving away whatever is left.

Which day is best for book hunting in West Palm Beach?

Saturday, between October and May. The Clematis Street market runs that morning until 1:30pm, Raptis and the Church Mouse on the island both open at ten, and the Book Exchange, Past Present Future and Retrohouse are all trading as well. Sunday and Monday are the thin days, with four doors open on the Monday and three on the Sunday: Monday closes Retrohouse but keeps the island pair, while Sunday leaves Past Present Future, Retrohouse and the Book Exchange's noon-to-4 window.

When is the Friends of the Library sale in West Palm Beach?

The dated one is in North Palm Beach rather than West Palm Beach proper, where the Friends of the North Palm Beach Library ran their 2026 sale at 303 Anchorage Drive over five public days at the end of January, with members admitted a day early, and they describe it as annual. The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach had no Friends sale listed on its website on October 21, 2026. The county-wide Friends group takes book donations at every Palm Beach County branch for sales posted on the library events calendar, which showed none coming up as of October 21, 2026.
