Where to buy used books in Southampton

Updated 01/10/2026

In the centre of Southampton, the port city on the Hampshire coast, Oxfam's music shop on East Street lists books and comics alongside its records, and a comics dealer trades upstairs in the Marlands. Further out in the city, the Shirley Oxfam, two Sue Ryder shops in Lordshill and Thornhill, and a Christian bookshop in Bitterne all keep shelves of donated or out-of-print titles. All prices here are given in sterling.

To the north and east, Eastleigh borough adds an Emmaus shop and a Sue Ryder in Eastleigh town centre, another Sue Ryder in Hedge End, and a car boot at Fair Oak that trades on Sundays and Wednesdays. Beyond the borough, Hythe across Southampton Water and Romsey in Test Valley each have an Oxfam branch named for books and music, and the National Trust runs second-hand rooms at Mottisfont. Winchester, under 12 miles up the M3, fits four stops within a short walk: a three-floor antiquarian and second-hand shop, Oxfam's book and music branch, the bookshop at the City Mill and a volunteer bookstall in the cathedral close.

Oxfam music shop

Oxfam Music Shop Southampton

1 East St, Southampton SO14 3HE

On East Street in the city centre, Oxfam runs a shop built around vinyl, from albums and 7-inch singles to 78s, with CDs and cassettes, yet its own shop page also lists books, comics and sheet music in the stock. A copy of that page archived in April 2026 carries the same list and the same seven-day timetable. Oxfam asks anyone travelling far for it to phone first, in case it falls on one of what the page calls the rare days the shop is short-staffed and closed.

Hours: Mon 10am–4pm, Tue–Fri 9:30am–5:30pm, Sat 9am–5:30pm, Sun 11am–3:30pmWebsite
Christian bookshop with second-hand section

Mayflower Christian Bookshop

114 Spring Rd, Southampton SO19 2QB

Across the Itchen in the Merry Oak corner of Bitterne, about two miles out and east-north-east, a charity bookshop that first opened in Sholing in 1976 and moved to Spring Road in May 1981. Next to new Bibles and Reformed theology it keeps more than 300 second-hand titles, plenty of them long out of print, which you can browse in person or buy online; its second-hand page made the same promise in a copy archived in August 2025, and the dearest of the 323 listings on 1 October 2026 cost £18. A coffee lounge at the lower end of the shop looks out on a tea garden, and a notice on the home page says staff shortages have cut Saturday trading to a single Saturday each month, the first.

Hours: Mon–Thu 10am–3pm, first Sat of the month 11am–2pmWebsite
Antiquarian and second-hand bookshop

The Winchester Bookshop

10a St George's St, Winchester SO23 8BG

In Winchester, just under 12 miles north-north-east of Southampton, Visit Winchester describes three floors of antiquarian, second-hand, vintage and nearly new books, with prints and ephemera, in a shop four local dealers founded in 1991 and tucked down a passage off St George's Street. On 26 June 2026 its Instagram showed a fresh delivery of Icon paperbacks and other science and non-fiction paperbacks in near-new condition. A post on 20 December 2025 noted that it is usually closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Cathedral charity bookstall

Deanery Bookstall

2 The Close, Winchester SO23 9LS

Also in Winchester, volunteers sell donated books from a stall in the Inner Close of the cathedral, and every sale since the stall began in 2001 has gone to the Cathedral's Music Foundation. According to the cathedral, as many as 100 boxes arrive in a summer week, so the volunteers weed out worn copies and favour unusual publications. It trades every day while the clocks are on summer time, which in 2026 means until 25 October, and then on winter weekends only; during the Christmas Market, from 21 November to 22 December 2025, it opened daily.

Vintage comic shop

Southampton Comics at Cloud Nine

Unit FU6, Marlands Shopping Centre, Civic Centre Rd, Southampton SO14 7SJ

A comics dealer sharing a first-floor unit of the Marlands with the Cloud Nine gift shop, a third of a mile north of East Street. The centre's directory speaks of thousands of comics and paperbacks to browse and of buying, selling and swapping, and the shop's own site, in a copy archived in January 2026, prices most comics from £2 with 50p and £1 boxes and £2 grab bags for diggers. Tuesday is its day off.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Shop Shirley

76-78 Shirley High St, Southampton SO15 3NE

Shirley's Oxfam, on the district's high street 1.9 miles north-west of the city centre, is one of the charity's general shops, and its page names books alongside clothes, homewares, CDs and DVDs; a separate bridal room, seen by appointment, usually offers a choice of over 200 wedding dresses. An archived June 2026 copy of the page has the same wording and hours. Books here share the floor with everything else, unlike Oxfam's Hythe and Romsey branches, which trade as book and music shops.

Charity shop (Sue Ryder)

Sue Ryder Lordshill

Unit 11, Lordshill District Centre, Southampton SO16 8HY

In Lordshill, a district centre in the city's north-west about 3.3 miles out, Sue Ryder's shop sits beside Sainsbury's and, by its own account, takes in 300 to 500 bags of donations a week. The shop says its media and book section is "always filled to the brim", a claim already on its page in a snapshot taken on 12 May 2026. Donors can drive round to a back entrance behind the supermarket.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–4:30pm, Sun 10am–4pmWebsite
Charity shop (Sue Ryder)

Sue Ryder Thornhill

40 Thornhill Park Rd, Southampton SO18 5TQ

In Thornhill Park, in the city's east roughly three miles from the centre and close to junction 7 of the M27, Sue Ryder has a shop with parking outside that names books among its donated stock, next to fashion and bric-a-brac. An archived copy of the page dated 18 May 2026 lists the same goods. Unlike Sue Ryder's Eastleigh, Hedge End and Lordshill shops, it opens at 9am and closes on Sundays.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9am–4:30pmWebsite
Charity shop (Emmaus)

Emmaus Eastleigh Charity Store

15 Leigh Rd, Eastleigh SO50 9FF

In Eastleigh, on Leigh Road beside the clock tower, opposite Sainsbury's and two minutes on foot from the station, Emmaus Hampshire's shop leads with furniture, from sofas to wardrobes, but its page also lists second-hand books with music, films, toys and board games. The takings support the charity's community in Winchester, home for up to 40 people who have experienced homelessness. That book line was already on the page in a copy archived in April 2026, which gave Monday-to-Saturday hours only; the charity's shop list on 1 October 2026 adds Sunday opening.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–4:30pm, Sun 10am–4pmWebsite
Charity shop (Sue Ryder)

Sue Ryder Eastleigh

48 Market St, Eastleigh SO50 5RB

In Eastleigh, on Market Street near the Swan Centre, a minute's walk from the Emmaus shop, Sue Ryder's shop stocks books next to fashion for all ages and bric-a-brac, and keeps a discounted corner where everything costs less than £3. The charity adds that this branch sells some new goods too, and a Wayback Machine capture from 18 May 2026 carries the same account of its stock.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–5pm, Sun 10am–4pmWebsite
Charity shop (Sue Ryder)

Sue Ryder Hedge End

9 Lower Northam Rd, Hedge End, Southampton SO30 4FN

In Hedge End, in Eastleigh borough about 4.5 miles east of Southampton's centre, Sue Ryder trades on Lower Northam Road, a street of shops and services that the charity says has lots of free parking. Its page promises clothes, bric-a-brac, music, books and DVDs, and suggests you might leave with a book for the beach or for cosy nights in. The wording was unchanged when the Internet Archive saved the page in May 2026.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–5pm, Sun 10am–4pmWebsite
Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Hythe

6c High St, Hythe SO45 6AH

In Hythe, on the western shore of Southampton Water in New Forest district, 2.2 miles due south of Southampton's centre in a straight line. Oxfam calls it a popular book and music shop that draws customers from the surrounding towns and villages, with volunteers willing to go the extra mile to find an elusive title, and a copy of its page archived in June 2026 says the same. Oxfam lists no hours for it, so call before setting out.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Romsey

25 The Hundred, Romsey SO51 8GD

In Romsey, the Test Valley market town about seven miles north-west of Southampton, Oxfam's branch at 25 The Hundred is a book and music shop offering a wide range of second-hand books, according to its page, which read identically in a copy archived in May 2026. A general Oxfam shop sits further along the same street at number 12. Neither page gives opening times, so check by phone.

National Trust second-hand bookshop

Mottisfont second-hand bookshops

Mottisfont, near Romsey SO51 0LP

In Test Valley, some eleven miles north-north-west of Southampton beyond Romsey, the National Trust keeps two second-hand bookshops on the Mottisfont estate, one in the Stables and one in the lodge beside visitor reception, according to the property page as archived on 4 September 2026. That same copy set a standard adult ticket at £18 without Gift Aid, let National Trust and Art Fund members in free, and showed the main shop and garden open from 10am to 5pm that day. Mottisfont's shopping page, archived in June 2026, adds that the bookshop covers a wide range of genres.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Winchester

74 Parchment St, Winchester SO23 8AT

Also in Winchester, on Parchment Street round the corner from the Winchester Bookshop, Oxfam's specialist branch says it stocks everything from recent paperbacks to old volumes, aiming at casual browsers and serious collectors of antiquarian and rare books alike. Music runs to CDs, vinyl and cassettes, and there are stamps, coins, banknotes and postcards for collectors. The Internet Archive's April 2026 snapshot shows the same text and timetable.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9:30am–5pm, Sun 11am–4pmWebsite
National Trust second-hand bookshop

Winchester City Mill bookshop

Bridge St, Winchester SO23 9BH

Also in Winchester, the National Trust's watermill on Bridge Street, free to enter, has a second-hand bookshop, and the Trust says all donations go towards looking after the place. With the mill race closed while a new water wheel goes in, the Trust's calendar still showed the bookshop trading from 10am to 4pm on 1 October 2026. There is no parking at the mill: the Trust sends drivers to the Chesil Street car park or the park and ride at St Catherine's.

Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

Brookfield Giant Car Boot

Allington Ln, Fair Oak, Eastleigh SO50 7DD

In Fair Oak, in Eastleigh borough about 5 miles to the north-east of central Southampton, the Brookfield Giant Car Boot posted on Facebook on 1 October 2026 that it would open on Sunday 4 October, with buyers in from 6:30am to 1pm for 50p, no dogs, and trading for as long as the weather allows. The post adds Wednesday openings, and the Daily Echo reported on 21 March 2026 that sellers arrive between 8am and 10am on Wednesdays. Neither the organisers nor the Echo mention books, so whether paperbacks turn up rests on the sellers of the day.

Local sourcing tips

  • The Daily Echo's car boot roundup of 21 March 2026 also pointed readers to Shootash, near Romsey in Test Valley, which it said would run on Saturdays from April to November.
  • October Books, the co-operative on Portswood Road, sells new titles, and its website lists no second-hand section. Founded in Bevois Valley in 1977, it moved in November 2018 into a former bank at 189 Portswood Road, and its range leans towards radical politics and local-interest titles.
  • The Bookshop Alehouse at 21 Portswood Road is a micropub whose Facebook page describes it as a pub in a bookshop, and the page was still posting quiz answers on 28 September 2026. Treat any shelf of books there as a bonus with a pint rather than a stop to plan around.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Southampton?

At Southampton Comics in the Marlands, loose comics go for 50p or £1 from the bargain boxes and £2 buys a grab bag. Sue Ryder's Market Street shop in Eastleigh has a bargain section priced under £3, though its page does not say whether books go in it. For books proper, the Oxfam branches in Hythe, Romsey and Winchester, the cathedral's Deanery Bookstall and the National Trust's room at the City Mill all sell donated stock. Mayflower publishes prices for its second-hand Christian titles online, and none of them went above £18 on 1 October 2026.

Which charity shops have books in Southampton?

In the city, the East Street Oxfam, a record shop first, keeps books and comics among its stock, the Shirley branch names books on its shop page, and so do Sue Ryder's Lordshill and Thornhill shops. In Eastleigh borough, Sue Ryder lists books at its Market Street and Hedge End branches, and Emmaus sells them alongside furniture on Leigh Road. Oxfam's dedicated book and music shops are in Hythe, Romsey and on Parchment Street in Winchester. Add the National Trust's second-hand rooms at Winchester City Mill and Mottisfont, the Deanery Bookstall run by Winchester Cathedral's volunteers, and Mayflower in Bitterne, which is itself a registered charity.

Which day is best for book hunting in Southampton?

Wednesday. Every shop in Southampton and Eastleigh borough that publishes hours trades that day, including Southampton Comics, which closes on Tuesdays, and Mayflower, shut on Fridays and on every Saturday bar the first; the Brookfield car boot at Fair Oak says it opens on Wednesdays as well. Sunday is the alternative: the car boot lets buyers in from 6:30am, and later the two Oxfams, Southampton Comics, Emmaus and three of the four Sue Ryder shops open, while Mayflower and Sue Ryder in Thornhill stay shut. The Winchester Bookshop says it usually closes on Sundays and Mondays, and from 25 October 2026 the Deanery Bookstall drops to weekends.

Where do I sell used books in Southampton?

Comics are the easy case: Southampton Comics buys, sells and swaps, and has a page on its site for selling a collection. Most other counters around Southampton run on gifts, from the Oxfam shops to the Deanery Bookstall, which takes donations between 10am and 3pm, bagged or boxed, and not in the rain. Valuable titles earn more as private listings, with Vinted, eBay.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk the usual routes, and a single photo of the bookcase in BiblioScan will show you which spines carry a resale value worth the trouble before you split the pile.
