That directory entry was still standing when the Internet Archive captured the page on April 12, 2026, and Roanoke Ballet Theatre had posted on May 27, 2025 that it ran an afternoon storytime in partnership with the shop. Over in Salem, the independent city that begins where Roanoke ends, at the western end of Main Street, just under seven miles from the center. The store dates its first day to March 1, 2020 on its own site, and a post on its Facebook page dated March 1, 2026 marked six years in business, crediting a pandemic opening and a stretch when the City of Salem took up the sidewalks outside. Buying is off the table, but donations earn a points card: one for a paperback dated 2010 or later, two for a hardback in that band, three for a same-year new release, thirty points cashed in for a $10 voucher, with anything past two boxes needing a call first and every offer final once you leave. A side room holds Salem Magickal Herbary, stocking more than 95 dried herbs, so the floor covers more ground than the sign suggests.

Kathryn Ecsedy runs the place as a hybrid: one half a donation-stocked secondhand bookshop that deliberately foregrounds authors its owner describes as historically marginalized, the other half a reuse center taking in leftover yarn, paint, beads, frames and half-finished craft kits. The donation policy is published in full — books of any genre and any reading age, no moldy copies, no audiobooks, porch pickup arranged by email — and the shop lists no store phone number at all. Read its accessibility page before you drive out: the lot is unpaved, the front-room doorway measures 31.5 inches and the bathroom door 29, and not one page of the site sets out a weekly schedule.
