Where to buy used books in Pensacola

Updated 10/21/2026

Hurricane Isaias struck the Pensacola area on October 9, 2026, as the Pensacola News Journal reported, and several stops below shut for the storm; check each one's own page or feed before you drive.

A Pensacola book run starts close to City Hall. Open Books is just north of it on North Guillemard Street and the main library, home to a shop run by its Friends, lies a few blocks to the southwest, so one short walk covers both, with Pensacola Pop Comics a little further east in East Hill. The rest fans out by car: north up Langley Avenue to the Tryon branch and up North 9th Avenue to TBS Comics, west along Mobile Highway to Bellview and along West Navy Boulevard to Area 51, northwest to Ensley on Nine Mile Road, over the bay to Gulf Breeze and Midway, and a couple of miles west to the T Street flea market.

The money here is in donated stock sold cheaply for a cause. Open Books funds a prison book program from its till, and the West Florida Friends and their Gulf Breeze counterparts raise money for their branches. Bellview sells entirely on trust at $1 an item, while the downtown and Tryon rooms set $1 honor kiosks beside their staffed shelves. Back issues are the other seam worth working: four comic shops on this page keep them, and the cafe-bookshop in Ensley mixes pre-loved copies in with new releases.

Open Books

1040 N Guillemard St, Pensacola, FL 32501

A volunteer-run nonprofit on North Guillemard Street, 0.2 miles north of City Hall, whose sales pay for the Prison Book Project, which mails free books to people held in Florida prisons. Its own FAQ calls it primarily a used bookstore, shelved by section with fiction and literature the largest runs, offers no searchable inventory, and rates its poetry section as arguably the best in town. The store dates its first storefront, on the west side, to October 2007 and its reopening at this address to February 4, 2012. On Facebook, a post of September 28, 2026 announced a Fall $1 Book Sale for October 24 and 25, 10am to 5pm, with thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles at a dollar each, following a Labor Day weekend sale at $2 a book from September 5 to 7.

Pensacola Library Bookstore

Pensacola Library, 239 N Spring St, Pensacola, FL 32502

A short walk from City Hall, about 0.4 miles to the southwest, the main branch of West Florida Public Libraries on North Spring Street houses the downtown shop of the Friends of the West Florida Public Library, who describe donated stock at bargain prices that turns over quickly. The library system puts prices across its bookstores at 25 cents to a few dollars, publishes the same short week the Friends do, and the Friends' own page, as archived in December 2024, described $1 honor-system kiosks in the lobby and hallway. A Nancy Drew 90th Anniversary Collection reached these shelves at $25, the group posted on October 6, 2026.

Comic shop with back issues

Pensacola Pop Comics

909 N 12th Ave, Pensacola, FL 32501

On North 12th Avenue in East Hill, 0.9 miles from City Hall on the east side, sits a comic shop that Ballinger Publishing's guide of February 2, 2026 credits with a back room of alphabetized back issues, alongside new and vintage comics, zines, trade paperbacks and small-press titles. The same piece traces the shop to 2014 and a former teacher, and notes that comics come ahead of toys and card games here. On Facebook the shop reported on October 12, 2026 that the old building had taken some storm damage and had only partial power, then announced on October 15 that new comics were in and the power was back. Ballinger printed a Plantation Road address, but the shop's own website and Facebook page both give North 12th Avenue.

TBS Comics & Games

6895 N 9th Ave, Suite A, Pensacola, FL 32504

Up North 9th Avenue, 5.3 miles out toward the north-northeast, sits the Pensacola branch of a company whose website says it has served Northwest Florida since 1985, with a sister store in Fort Walton Beach. Ballinger Publishing's February 2026 shop guide describes stock running from brand-new releases to hard-to-find back issues, next to trading card, role-playing and board games and a large in-store play area. The shop posts hours running until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and its Facebook page confirmed a return to regular hours on Monday, October 12, 2026, three days after the hurricane.

Area 51 Comics, Toys & Collectibles

3718 W Navy Blvd, Pensacola, FL 32507

In West Pensacola, an unincorporated community with City Hall 2.9 miles to its east, this West Navy Boulevard store carries what Ballinger Publishing's February 2026 guide calls a large selection of back issue comics and indie titles. Retro video games, trading cards and action figures share the floor, and there is a lounge with classic consoles and an arcade cabinet. Ballinger lists no website for it and sends readers to its Facebook page, @Area51CollectibleStore, the place for current opening times.

Mr. Comics

3180 Gulf Breeze Pkwy, Gulf Breeze, FL 32563

Out in Midway, an unincorporated part of Santa Rosa County with a Gulf Breeze mailing address, this shop stands 7.9 miles out on Gulf Breeze Parkway, due east of City Hall. Ballinger Publishing's February 2026 roundup of local shops lists new releases and back-issue comics here, along with graphic novels running from superheroes and manga to indie titles, plus modern and vintage collectibles. Tabletop and card players use it as a meeting point too, and the same article points readers to its Facebook page, @Mr.ComicsComicBookShop, for events and hours.

New and used bookstore

The Idle Reader

Mrs. Jones Cold Brew, 1449 W Nine Mile Rd, Suite 17, Pensacola, FL 32534

Up in Ensley, an unincorporated part of Escambia County 9.2 miles northwest of City Hall, this shop shares a Nine Mile Road unit with the Mrs. Jones Cold Brew coffee bar and says it sells pre-loved and new books side by side. Its first book swap, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, traded one ticket per gently used book handed in for a pick from the swap table. No weekly timetable appears on the coffee bar's site or on the shop's Facebook page, so check the feed before making the drive. After the hurricane it thanked customers for turning out on October 12, 2026, and asked them to bring cash while its wifi stayed down.

Flea markets

Flea markets

T&W Flea Market

1717 N T St, Pensacola, FL 32505

In West Pensacola, 1.9 miles west of City Hall, this market opens every weekend all year, and its operator counts more than 60 indoor and 400 outdoor vendors selling new and used goods. The operator names clothes, furniture, produce, tools and collectibles on its website, a list the Internet Archive recorded on July 13, 2026, and has no word about books; a crate of old paperbacks here would be a find, not something to count on. Tables start at $25 for anyone who would rather sell than browse.

Friends of the West Florida Public Library Book Sale

Pensacola Library, 239 N Spring St, Pensacola, FL 32502

According to the library system, the Friends hold a quarterly book sale at this downtown branch, and the group's Facebook page counts down to each one. The fall 2026 edition opened at 3pm on Friday, September 25, cut its prices on the Saturday and wound up on Sunday the 27th with a $7 Fill-a-Bag Day, closing at 3pm. Children took home free books that weekend in honor of Dolly Parton, and an October 5, 2026 thank-you post called it the Friends' most successful sale yet. Watch the same feed for the next dates.

Tryon Library Bookstore

Tryon Branch Library, 1200 Langley Ave, Pensacola, FL 32504

On Langley Avenue, with City Hall 4.6 miles to the south, the Lucia M. Tryon branch gives the same Friends group a second shop for donated stock, along with a $1 honor-system kiosk in the lobby. Its hours are tighter than the branch's, which keeps its doors open until 7pm on weekdays: the library and the Friends agree on a 3pm close every day except Thursday, Saturday included. The Friends' Facebook page sent readers here for romance and mystery on September 14, 2026 and for new arrivals on October 15, 2026, days after the storm closures.

Bellview Library Bookstore

Bellview Library, 6425 Mobile Hwy, Pensacola, FL 32526

In Bellview, an unincorporated community 6.3 miles northwest of City Hall, the branch on Mobile Highway holds a Friends shelf where everything costs $1, paid on trust or through a posted QR code. Its listed hours are the library's own, running to 7pm Monday through Friday. The library system's bookstores page spells out those terms, and the Internet Archive caught that wording on July 11, 2026.

Friends of the Gulf Breeze Library Bookstore

Gulf Breeze Library, 1060 Shoreline Dr, Gulf Breeze, FL 32561

Over the bay in Gulf Breeze, a separate city 5.3 miles to the southeast, a volunteer group called the Friends of the Gulf Breeze Library keeps a used book store in the lobby of the Santa Rosa County branch on Shoreline Drive, as the county's own library pages describe it. The group posts opening windows on Facebook rather than a timetable — 10am–1pm on Saturday, April 25, 2026, 9am–3pm on June 26, until 3pm on August 11 — so call the branch before crossing the bridge. A September 14, 2026 post pointed past the fiction to nonfiction on gardening, sailing, habit-building and raising a puppy. The county calendar shows the group's latest sale filling the branch on May 15 and 16, 2026, a Friday and Saturday.

Local sourcing tips

  • The October 2026 storm reshuffled several schedules here. The West Florida Friends shut all their shops at 2pm on Thursday, October 8, kept them closed through that Saturday and were still closed on Monday the 12th, when they said the downtown room would open only as volunteers allowed. On the Santa Rosa side, the Gulf Breeze volunteers had already announced a Friday-and-Saturday closure on October 7. Open Books posted its late-October dollar sale well before the storm, so check its Facebook feed before counting on those dates.
  • Two other Pensacola bookshops sell new books rather than secondhand ones. Bodacious Bookstore & Cafe on East Intendencia Street describes a curated selection with online orders through Bookshop.org, and Black Café & Bookstore on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive sells online through the same platform alongside its cafe and event room.
  • Two sources come and go rather than keep a counter. UWF Libraries cleared gently used books at the John C. Pace Library on campus on March 3 and October 13, 2026, charging a dollar per softcover and two per hardcover, cash or check only, so the university events calendar is worth a look each term. Perfect Day Books, a bookstore built into a renovated truck that Hannah Burns launched in July 2025, parks at parks, events and small businesses around town with new and used books and comics, according to Ballinger Publishing on January 5, 2026.
  • A few more library rooms lie a little beyond the area covered here. The library system lists a fourth bookstore at its Southwest branch on Gulf Beach Highway, 13 miles southwest of City Hall, run by that branch's own Friends group. In Pace, Santa Rosa County says its Friends sell used books inside the branch and run a book sale at Alyssa's Antique Depot on Chumuckla Highway, and the Pensacola News Journal photographed The Nook and Quill on August 18, 2026 as the town's newest bookstore.
  • Plan the downtown pair on foot and the rest by car. Open Books and the Spring Street library are under a mile apart, Pensacola Pop Comics a similar distance east of Open Books, and Open Books keeps the longer weekend because it opens every day from noon, whereas the library room winds down by 4pm on a Saturday and has no Sunday hours. Tryon and Bellview are 5.6 miles apart along the north side of town, and since both lean on the honor system, small bills save fuss.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Pensacola?

Start with the dollar shelves. The Bellview branch charges a flat $1 for everything on its Friends shelf, on the honor system or by QR code, and both the downtown library and Tryon add $1 honor kiosks to their staffed rooms, where the library system puts prices between 25 cents and a few dollars. Open Books also holds sales with thousands of titles at $1 or $2 apiece, announced on its Facebook feed. For a real haul, wait for the Friends' quarterly sale downtown, where the last day has been sold by the bag.

Where do I sell used books in Pensacola?

None of the bookshops or library rooms listed here advertises cash for books. Open Books and the library rooms fill their shelves with gifts, and the West Florida Friends even keep a warehouse where volunteers sort donated books and DVDs. So the money route is online, through eBay or Amazon, and BiblioScan helps sort the pile first: point it at a shelf, take one photo, and each spine it recognizes comes back tagged with a resale figure. The leftovers make a good donation to Open Books or to the Friends, one funding prison book mailings and the other the branch libraries.

When is the Friends of the Library sale in Pensacola?

The main event is run by the Friends of WFPL at the Spring Street library downtown, which the library system describes as a quarterly sale; the group posts each set of dates on its Facebook page. Its fall edition opened on a Friday afternoon and ended on a Sunday when shoppers paid one price per filled bag. Across the bay, the Gulf Breeze Friends hold sales of their own inside their branch, listed on the Santa Rosa County calendar.

Which day is best for book hunting in Pensacola?

Saturday reaches the most stops with posted hours: Open Books, the downtown, Tryon and Bellview library rooms, TBS Comics and the T&W Flea Market from 7am, though the library rooms close at 3pm or 4pm. Thursday gives the longest library windows instead, with downtown and Tryon open until 5pm and Bellview's honor shelf until 7pm, while TBS stays open until 10pm. On Sunday, Open Books, TBS and the flea market are the sure bets, since all three West Florida library rooms list Sunday as closed.
