Where to buy used books in Orillia

Updated 10/21/2026

Distances here run from the Orillia City Centre on Andrew Street South, and the area takes in the City of Orillia plus the townships around it: Severn to the north and west, from the Orillia Square Mall out to Coldwater and Washago, Ramara to the east, from Atherley to Brechin, and any corner of Oro-Medonte that lies nearer to Orillia than to Barrie. Barrie, a little over 30 km to the southwest, is covered separately. All prices quoted below are in Canadian dollars.

Three of the stops are a short walk from one another in the downtown core: the literacy council's bookshop behind St. Andrew's Church on Peter Street North, the Salvation Army thrift on Wyandotte Street and the volunteer thrift shop in the little mall on West Street South. The Book Re-View, a used bookstore since 1991, sits farther up West Street North, Dr.Comics trades from the Orillia Square Mall just inside Severn, Value Village stands out on Highway 12 to the west, and the Ramara library keeps its sale shelf across the Atherley Narrows to the east.

If an older list sends you to Mississaga Street for comics, it predates the fire of January 2025, after which Dr.Comics moved out to the mall. The literacy council's shop has been open since spring 2025, and the Orillia Thrift Store marked its full opening in February 2026.

The Book Re-View

438 West St N, Unit 2, Orillia, ON L3V 5E8

Up West Street North, about 2.2 km from the City Centre, sits a used bookstore that OrilliaMatters traces to November 1991, when its founder opened it on that street. The same paper's April 2023 profile counted 45,000 books on the shelves, stock that customers bring in against store credit, and described an inventory you can search online before you go. The shop kept hosting its own events through 2025 and 2026, among them a Bedazzle a Book Night on November 15, 2025 and a Teddy Bear Picnic and Market at 438 West Street North on July 10, 2026, both listed in OrilliaMatters' Weekend Buzz column. Its website takes 20 per cent off for anyone showing a student or teacher card, and two resident cats greet visitors.

Reads & Needs

99 Peter St N (rear entrance), Orillia, ON L3V 4Z3

At the back of St. Andrew's Church, on the corner of Peter Street North and Neywash Street 600 m north of the City Centre, the Orillia & District Literacy Council sells pre-loved books beside crafts and original art by local makers, raising money for its adult learners. The council announced the move to 99 Peter Street North and the opening of the shop in a release OrilliaMatters ran on May 2, 2025, and the local page North Simcoe Life invited readers to its first-anniversary party on May 6, 2026. Book donations are taken at the same rear door. The council's contact page gives the bookstore the same hours as its office and closes both whenever a snow day cancels school buses, which makes it a weekday stop only.

Comic shop with back issues

Dr.Comics

Orillia Square Mall, 1029 Brodie Dr, Unit 20, Severn, ON L3V 0V2

In Severn Township, inside the Orillia Square Mall on the northern edge of town, a 3.1 km trip from the City Centre, a comic shop that dates itself to 1993 and lists bins of back issues, graphic novels, manga and retro magazines on its website. Its downtown store burned in the January 2025 fire at Mississaga and Peter streets, and OrilliaMatters reported on February 22, 2025 that it would reopen in the mall with twice the floor space. The shop buys comics and other collectibles, valuing them over the counter or collecting the larger lots, and an Instagram post on October 13, 2026 set shorter fall hours, still seven days a week. The footer of its website, though, keeps the older grid with 8pm closing on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ramara Township Public Library Book Sales

Ramara Centre Branch, 5482 Highway 12 S, Ramara, ON L3V 0S2

In Ramara Township, at the Ramara Centre branch on Highway 12 South in Atherley, some 6.7 km from the City Centre, the township library runs a standing book sale shelf, with DVDs and video games mixed in, and announced new prices for it on March 20, 2025, according to its Instagram. It has also staged two larger sales with the Friends of the Ramara Public Library, on Saturday, May 17, 2025, after which the leftover tables went at $10 a bag, and on Saturday morning, May 30, 2026, from 10am until 1pm. Minutes of the library board's April 16, 2026 meeting said the Friends would staff that sale and named a $10 bag of books as its most popular selling point. The small Brechin branch, inside the township office, opens only on Thursdays from 1pm to 6pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.

Volunteer thrift shop

Orillia Thrift Store

92 West St S (entrance on Elgin St), Orillia, ON

Downtown, in the small mall where West Street South meets Elgin Street, 200 m from the City Centre, a nonprofit thrift shop run by about 60 volunteers that splits its proceeds between Christian education, Orillia Christian School among the recipients, and community causes, as OrilliaMatters reported on February 20, 2026. Books get posts of their own on its Instagram, which advertised a $5 fill-a-bag-of-books day on January 29, 2025 and said on May 26, 2025 that most titles in its large book section cost under $2. The shop gives its address as 92 West Street South, the article placed it at 10 Western Avenue in the same mall, and parking is behind the building. In February 2026 it was hoping to lengthen its hours, so check its social pages for the current week.

Salvation Army Thrift Store

The Salvation Army Thrift Store Orillia

55 Wyandotte St, Orillia, ON L3V 5M8

On Wyandotte Street, a 300 m walk southwest from the City Centre, The Salvation Army's Orillia corps runs a small thrift store whose own page names books as one of its sections, next to women's, men's and children's clothing, housewares and linens. An Internet Archive capture from October 2025 shows the same wording, and the page read the same on October 21, 2026. Drop-offs go around to the back during opening hours, but the page lists no schedule, so call 705-326-6550 first.

Value Village

Value Village Orillia

8000 Highway 12, Orillia, ON L3V 7W7

On Highway 12 at the west edge of the city, 2.4 km out from the City Centre and close to Home Depot by the store's own directions, a Value Village that Savers operates for profit. Books turn up there only inside a general stock list of the sort the chain writes for its other branches, which leaves the size of the shelf in this store an open question, and books and media are welcome at the drop-off. An Internet Archive copy from June 2026 carries the same address and the same 9am–9pm opening from Monday to Saturday, and Tuesday is seniors' day, with 30 per cent off for anyone 60 or over.

Local sourcing tips

  • The Orillia Public Library on Mississaga Street West held a Book Sale Fundraiser outside the branch on Saturday, June 27, 2026, during the Delicious Days of Summer festival, with adult and children's books, DVDs and puzzles priced between $1 and $5. Nothing about a next sale had been posted by October 21, 2026. The library accepts donated books, two boxes per visit unless a book drive is on, and warns that it may sell or discard whatever it doesn't keep, which is where its sale stock comes from.
  • Two community events belong in the calendar too. The Orillia Mariposa Grandmothers to Grandmothers ran their Book and Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange at St. Paul's Church on Peter Street North on February 28, 2026, a swap in which you bring up to six books or puzzles and take others home, and CFUW Orillia included books among the goods at what it calls its annual indoor garage sale, held at ODAS Park on Fairgrounds Road on May 9, 2026. Neither had published a 2027 date by October 21, 2026.
  • The other thrift counters in town lean toward clothing. 2nd Chance Thrift on Atherley Road was set up to sell affordable clothing, as an OrilliaMatters column put it in November 2025, St James' Pennywise, in the basement of the Anglican church on Peter Street North, is listed by 211 Ontario for clothing and small housewares, and Tales of Two Closets, which opened on Mississaga Street East on June 6, 2026, curates pre-loved clothing and accessories. Habitat for Humanity's ReStore on James Street West completes the loop; look in when passing, but don't build a book run around any of them.
  • North and northwest of the city, the antique trade is a long shot for paper. Back in Thyme, on Coldwater Road in the village of Coldwater, lists rare books among its antiques on its own site, and Antiques Mall On 11 North, a multi-vendor hall on Campbell Road in Severn, is a browse more than a sourcing stop. The Farmers' Flea sets up outdoors at ODAS Park on Saturdays from May to October, according to its organizer, who advertises garage treasures but not books.
  • Manticore Books on Mississaga Street East is downtown's independent shop for new titles, so it isn't listed here. Chapter and Verse, the used book and record shop a teenager opened inside Creative Nomad Studios on Mississaga Street West in September 2022, was last written up by OrilliaMatters in August 2024 for a toonie-table anniversary sale; with nothing more recent from it on record, check its Facebook page before you make the trip. The Book Sanctuary on Dunedin Street announced on Facebook on May 20, 2026 that its storefront was to shut once June was over, and that its books would continue to be sold online through that page, Marketplace, Amazon and eBay.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Orillia?

Start with the library sales. The Orillia Public Library's June 2026 fundraiser topped out at $5 an item, and in Ramara the library board's minutes of April 2026, written ahead of that year's sale, describe $10-a-bag pricing as the biggest draw. Between those dates, the volunteer thrift shop on West Street South said in May 2025 that most of its books were under $2, and it ran a $5 bag day in January 2025, while the Book Re-View gives students and teachers a fifth off.

Where do I sell used books in Orillia?

The Book Re-View built its stock on customer trade-ins paid in store credit, as OrilliaMatters described it in 2023, so check at the till what it takes in now; Dr.Comics pays for comics and will pick up a big collection. Before you box anything, run the shelf past BiblioScan: one photo returns a resale price for each spine the app can identify, so the handful worth more than credit can be listed on eBay.ca, Facebook Marketplace, AbeBooks, Kijiji or Amazon.ca, and the rest can be donated to Reads & Needs or the public library.

Which day is best for book hunting in Orillia?

Saturday, with one gap. The Book Re-View, Value Village, Dr.Comics and the Ramara Centre branch are all open, the library only until 3pm, and the Ramara sales of 2025 and 2026 and the downtown library sale of June 2026 all fell on a Saturday. The literacy council's bookshop is the exception, closed on weekends and from noon on Fridays, so slot it into a weekday. Of the stops that post a schedule, Value Village and Dr.Comics alone open on Sundays, and the Book Re-View is also closed every Monday.

When is the big library book sale in Orillia?

No fixed date has been set. The Orillia Public Library held its 2026 fundraiser sale outside the main library on June 27, a Saturday, timed to downtown's Delicious Days of Summer, while across the Narrows the Ramara library and its Friends group ran sales at the Ramara Centre on May 17, 2025 and May 30, 2026. Spring and early summer is when to watch both libraries' social media.
