Where to buy used books in Newcastle

Newcastle, NSW, spreads its secondhand books across three council areas that the Australian Bureau of Statistics groups into its Newcastle–Maitland urban area: Newcastle itself, Lake Macquarie to the south and Maitland up the Hunter to the north-west. Hamilton has a walkable cluster, with Q's Books and Rices about 115 m apart on Beaumont Street and the Bookbuff under a kilometre west in Broadmeadow, while nearer the harbour Cooks Hill Books holds its corner of Darby Street and The Press Book House pours coffee on Hunter Street. Maitland's High Street adds three more shops within about half a kilometre of each other plus a council library sale at the Town Hall, three op shops cover the Lake Macquarie side at Belmont North, Belmont and Toronto, and every entry outside the city centre says up front which suburb it's in. Every price mentioned from here on is in Australian dollars.

Selling takes a little planning. The Press wants a list of titles by email before you bring a box, Cooks Hill Books describes itself as buying as well as selling, and the Maitland Book Exchange was taking donations when it reopened under new owners on 3 March 2026. Lifeline's two shops accept donated goods over the counter, and the Friends of the University take books for the next fair from 20 October 2026. Anything a shop won't pay fairly for is better off on Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or the Australian Amazon and eBay sites.

On the café strip of Darby Street in Cooks Hill, David McLean opened this corner shop on 1 April 1985, and he told HunterHunter that before starting it he had asked Rice's for a job and been turned down. The Facebook page, which sums the business up as quality secondhand books bought and sold, kept logging fresh stock through 2026 under the name of Sean behind the counter: older Agatha Christie paperbacks at $5 apiece on 3 July, a batch of Egyptian magic, Jewish mysticism, occult and astrology titles on 1 May, a top-up of pre-loved vinyl on 10 September. There's no hours field because the posts mention closing at 4pm while a Darby Street business directory gives 10am to 3pm daily, and the shop also shut without warning on Monday 29 June 2026, so check the page before a special trip.

Q's Books

115 Beaumont St, Hamilton NSW 2303

Hamilton's Beaumont Street is home to this family-run general book trader, which Brian and Aileen Querruel opened in central Newcastle in 1996 before moving it out here, and which their former employee Sandra and her husband Greg have owned since July 2012. By the owners' count the shelves hold between 100,000 and 150,000 pre-loved, rare, out-of-print and new books, and they offer to hunt down a copy of anything that isn't there. On 27 February 2026 the Facebook page took 30 per cent off every art book until further notice, and in April 2026 the shop signed on as a stop in the Global Book Crawl held across the Newcastle region from 20 to 26 April; its opening hours were published on its website, which was showing a hosting-suspended page by late September 2026, so none are given here.

Maitland Book Exchange

495 High St, Maitland NSW 2320

In Maitland, about 30 km north-west of central Newcastle, this shop in The Levee precinct sells preloved books across all genres; the Maitland Mercury traced it on High Street back to 1983 when it reported a change of owners in May 2025, and by 2026 the shop's Facebook page described it as owned and operated by a mother-and-daughter team. A post on the Facebook page of Maitland mayor Philip Penfold announced it officially reopening from Tuesday 3 March 2026 and taking book donations, giving Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday normally 10am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 2pm with Mondays closed; that grid comes from the mayor rather than the shop, so it stays out of the hours field. The shop's own page posts dated specials, and on 25 September 2026 it had Colin Forbes, GM Ford, Jeffery Deaver and Nelson DeMille at $5 each, any book on a red-tape shelf at $5, and Nora Roberts or Danielle Steel at two for $5. Its former web store returns a Shopify store-unavailable notice, so follow it on Facebook instead.

Friends of the University Book Fair

The Great Hall, University of Newcastle, Callaghan NSW 2308

At Callaghan, on the University of Newcastle campus 8 km west of the city centre, the Friends of the University fill the Great Hall with donated stock to pay for student scholarships; their own history puts the first fair in July 1983 and says it has been held annually since 2024. Newcastle Weekly counted more than 40,000 secondhand books for the 2026 edition, along with CDs, DVDs, games, puzzles, music scores and records, and reported that the 2025 fair raised almost $98,000, close to 40 per cent of it in the first four hours. That Friday-evening early-bird session is the one to be at, and the group reopens donations on 20 October 2026 at its new base in International House.

About 115 m north of Q's on the same Hamilton street, Rices packs books, records, CDs, DVDs, cassettes and magazines into sections that its online shop tour lists from Alternative and Australiana through to Physics and Poetry. The most recent Facebook post, dated 14 April 2025, offered a 624-page Warhol volume measuring 42 by 32 cm for $75 and flagged a large Terry Pratchett collection. Posts from 2020 carry an older address at 173 Maitland Road, Tighes Hill, so a stale directory entry may send you there; the Instagram bio has the Beaumont Street address and the hours given here.

A café on Hunter Street in the city centre whose shelves are, by the shop's own account, entirely secondhand, from recent releases to large-format art books, and all of them for sale. It will buy when there's room: email the titles first, because nothing is accepted sight unseen. The Newcastle Herald reported in January 2025 that Emily Devine and Katie Bleus of Betty Loves Books had bought the café at the end of 2024, and it dated the founding to 2013, a year earlier than the shop's own FAQ gives.

Over in Broadmeadow, on Belford Street some 850 m west of Q's, the Bookbuff introduces itself as a seller of used books in every genre, comics and a wide variety of sheet music, and a January 2025 post put it in its 22nd year at this address with regular hours of Monday to Friday 9 to 4 and Saturday 9 to 12. Its posts point to maps, foreign-language dictionaries and phrase books, and a bargain non-fiction stand where duplicates go at half the price on the sticker, with some titles also listed on eBay under the seller name bbuff100. The page was still posting window displays in late September 2026, when it also warned that the shop would close for the Labour Day holiday on Monday 5 October 2026.

Also in Maitland, roughly 230 m along High Street from the Book Exchange, Tomcat pairs good-condition secondhand books and a set of daily specials tables with a comics stock of singles, graphic novels, packs and vintage issues. An Instagram post of 17 September 2026 put single comics at $5 each and listed Funko Pop vinyls, LPs, DVDs and framed canvas prints on the same floor. That post is also where the hours below come from, with a weather-permitting caveat attached, so a stormy day is a gamble.

In Hamilton North, on Clyde Street, the Lifeline shop lists books, movies and music among its departments, next to vintage clothing, haberdashery, manchester and furniture. HunterHunter's feature The Ultimate Lake Mac & Newcastle Thrifting Trail, published on 30 November 2025, praised its large floor and fast turnover and called it ideal for book lovers. Donations go over the counter during opening hours, and the proceeds fund local suicide-prevention services.

Vinnies NSW lists Sunday trading here on top of the full working week and Saturday, a useful fallback at the southern end of this guide.

In Toronto, the Lake Macquarie town on the western shore about 20 km south-west of Newcastle, this Vinnies sits on The Boulevarde. A Newcastle Herald feature on the Lake Macquarie Op Shop Trail, first published in its Eat Play Stay section on 15 September 2026, captioned a file picture of the shop with a stock list running from clothing and shoes to homewares, books and accessories. The Vinnies NSW page gives a short week of Monday, Thursday and Friday only, so this one suits a weekday run.

The third Maitland address, around 300 m further along High Street from Tomcat, is a Lifeline shop that its operator calls one of the largest secondhand stores in the Hunter, with books, movies and music among the departments it lists. The shop's Instagram account bears that out: a mega-sale over 29 and 30 March 2025 led with books, records, CDs and music books, and a December 2024 post started books at $2. Lifeline's shop page has it closing at 5pm Monday through Saturday, with a Sunday that runs from 10am until 4pm, while the Instagram bio closes the doors at 4pm on Saturday, which is why the hours field is empty.

A little further south in Belmont, beside Lowes on the Pacific Highway, the East Lake Macquarie Anglican parish runs this church op shop with volunteers. HunterHunter's November 2025 op-shop feature lists mostly clothing, books, children's toys, jewellery and haberdashery, plus handmade items crafted by the parish community. The parish website gives weekday and Saturday-morning trading, and it also runs a second op shop at the Merrigum Centre in Windale.

Maitland Libraries Book Sale

Maitland Town Hall, High St, Maitland NSW 2320

Maitland Town Hall, roughly a kilometre south-east of the Book Exchange along High Street, is where Maitland City Council's libraries held their book sale on Saturday 8 November 2025. The council's Facebook video of 15 October 2025 announced it was bringing back its bumper Book Sale, with a $5 tote bag to fill with as many second-hand titles as it would hold, from fiction and graphic novels to picture books, magazines and DVDs. It ran as part of the Garage Sale Trail, which returns to Maitland on 7–8 and 14–15 November 2026, but no 2026 date for the library sale had been posted by late September 2026.

Hamilton makes a walking morning on a weekday or a Saturday. Q's and Rices face the same stretch of Beaumont Street, and MacLean's Booksellers at number 69 sells new books, so don't count it as a third secondhand stop. The Bookbuff is a short walk west on Belford Street, and the Lifeline shop in Hamilton North is about 1.4 km north of it.
Give Maitland its own trip rather than a detour on the way somewhere else. The Book Exchange, Tomcat and Lifeline sit within about 530 m of one another on High Street, and the Book Exchange posts its specials on Facebook, which is where to look before driving up, since its old web store no longer loads.
Betty Loves Books at The Station on Scott Street is the other store that The Press's books page sends readers to, and its Facebook intro says it sells new and used, though Newcastle Live in May 2025 described it as a handpicked range of new Australian and international fiction. Its Facebook page announced on 14 September 2026 that the shop was passing to a new owner, so expect changes before you build a visit around it.
Two bookshops that local roundups list next to the secondhand ones sell new stock: MacLean's in Hamilton and Harry Hartog at Kotara, both described by Newcastle Live in May 2025 as places for new releases. The Salvos Stores branches around the region are left off this page as well, because none of them published a book section that could be checked shop by shop.
Lake Macquarie council publishes an Op Shop Trail guide covering Warners Bay, Cardiff, Toronto, Belmont and Morisset.
