Where to buy used books in Middlesbrough

Updated 01/10/2026

Middlesbrough, on the south bank of the Tees, has its second-hand books scattered over Teesside rather than stacked in the town centre. The nearest finds are North Ormesby's market, under a mile east, and the Teesside Reuse Shop just across the river at Haverton Hill, while the National Trust's bookshop at Ormesby Hall lies three miles south-east. Redcar, seven miles along the coast, pairs a back-issue comic shop with a Sunday car boot about a mile away. Expect to pay in pounds sterling throughout.

Dates count here as much as places. Yarm's book fair on Sunday 8 November 2026 brings Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association dealers to the town's school, and Guisborough's Oxfam, on the edge of the North York Moors, keeps books in a corner of its own. Outside the Middlesbrough, Stockton and Redcar and Cleveland boroughs altogether, Hartlepool's Needful Things fills two floors with books and curios, Stokesley's community library sells donated books to fund itself, and Sedgefield's racecourse holds a car boot on Thursdays and Sundays.

PBFA book fair

Yarm-on-Tees Book Fair

Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Yarm School, The Friarage, Yarm TS15 9EJ

In Yarm, the Stockton-on-Tees market town 6.7 miles south-west of Middlesbrough, dealers belonging to the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association gather in the Princess Alexandra Auditorium at Yarm School on Sunday 8 November 2026. The PBFA's page for the fair says members will be offering books, maps and other printed material, puts admission at £1 and parking at the school, and a printable ticket on the same site admits two for free. Yarm railway station is 1.1 miles away, the association adds, with the A19 and A66 as the nearest main roads.

National Trust second-hand bookshop

Ormesby Hall Second-hand Bookshop

Ormesby Hall, Ladgate Ln, Middlesbrough TS3 0SR

Just over the boundary in Redcar and Cleveland, three miles south-east of Middlesbrough's centre, Ormesby Hall, the National Trust house that was home to the Pennyman family for four centuries, keeps a second-hand bookshop of its own, tucked off the internal courtyard beside the old laundry. The Trust's page describes fiction, non-fiction and a dedicated children's section, and a reel the property posted on 10 April 2026 appealed for children's books in particular, to be left at Visitor Welcome, under the line "Open daily 10.30am–4pm". That daily promise no longer holds: the Trust's calendar, read on 1 October 2026, closes the house on Wednesdays from 24 September to 22 December 2026, except between 24 October and 1 November, and otherwise opens it at 10.30am with last entry at 3.45pm. Adult admission to house, garden and café is listed at £7, and the car park on Ladgate Lane is free.

Bookshop and vintage curios

Needful Things

23 Church Square, Hartlepool TS24 7EU

Hartlepool, a borough with its own council beyond the Tees estuary, sits outside Middlesbrough's area, yet Church Square is only 7.6 miles north of Middlesbrough, and Needful Things fills two floors there with books, vintage clothes, curiosities and music. In a question-and-answer post on 6 June 2026, the shop reckoned it had been on the square for around five years, that customers are welcome upstairs and that it accepts donations of books, while a May 2026 post showed off a rearranged A to Z wall of general fiction. Its post of 20 August 2026 gave 11am to 4pm every day except Sunday, whereas the council's Explore Hartlepool listing marks Wednesday as closed, so go by the shop's own page.

Reuse shop at the recycling centre

Teesside Reuse Shop

Tees Valley HWRC, Haverton Hill Rd, Billingham TS23 1PZ

North of the river at Haverton Hill, in Stockton-on-Tees borough and 1.7 miles north-north-west of Middlesbrough's centre as the crow flies, SUEZ sells residents' reusable cast-offs from the household waste recycling centre it runs for Middlesbrough and Stockton councils. Staff set aside donations still in good condition, and the anniversary release SUEZ issued in September 2026 counted 27,182 items sold since the August 2025 opening, naming books with homeware, DVDs, toys and garden furniture among the most popular lines. Its gates let shoppers in daily, from half past eight until mid-afternoon.

Second-hand bookshops

Comic shop and café (back issues)

Mr Chinnery's Emporium

5B Station Rd, Redcar TS10 1AH

Also in Redcar, on Station Road, this family-run comic shop and café, which Visit Tees Valley named on 3 January 2026 as a must-visit for the year, sells comics beside action figures, Warhammer and retro games. Its online catalogue, filed under comics and books, runs to more than 500 pages of single issues going back decades, from a 1984 Marvel UK Spider-Man Summer Special at £10 to Marvel issues of the 2010s at £4. The shop notes that much of what's on its shelves isn't listed online, so message ahead if you're after a particular run.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Guisborough

1 Church St, Guisborough TS14 6HG

Guisborough, a market town in Redcar and Cleveland 7.9 miles east-south-east of Middlesbrough, has an Oxfam shop at 1 Church Street whose branch page, captured by the Wayback Machine in April 2026, files music and books in a men's corner and calls its children's books popular alongside the toys and clothes. The same page leads with a large selection of women's clothes and lists books among the donations the shop accepts. Oxfam publishes no opening times for this branch and asks visitors to contact it first, on 01287 639229.

Car boot sales & markets

Street market and car boot

North Ormesby Market

Market Place, North Ormesby, Middlesbrough

Under a mile east-south-east of the town centre, North Ormesby's Market Place hosts a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays that, by its own Facebook account, pairs a big fruit and vegetable stall with car boot sellers. On 26 September 2026 it billed that Saturday as a market and car boot fair, telling shoppers to arrive early for the best treasures, and seven days earlier it had counted car boot sellers among the stalls. None of them mentions books, which makes this a general bargain hunt with a paperback or two as a possible bonus.

Car boot sale

Redcar Racecourse Afternoon Car Boot Sale

Redcar Racecourse, West Dyke Rd, Redcar TS10 1HT

In Redcar, seven miles east-north-east, the racecourse's West Dyke Road entrance takes sellers from 10.30am and lets buyers in from 1pm at £1 a head, according to the organiser's Facebook posts. A post of 28 September 2026 set the season as every Sunday from February to December, weather permitting, and on 1 October the organiser confirmed Sunday 4 October 2026. Books don't come up in any of its September posts, so expect a general rummage where they surface by chance.

Car boot sale

Sedgefield Car Boot Sale

Sedgefield Racecourse, Racecourse Rd, Sedgefield TS21 2HW

Sedgefield, a County Durham town beyond the Stockton-on-Tees borough boundary, 10.3 miles west-north-west of Middlesbrough, has a racecourse whose car boot page, in a copy saved on 22 April 2026, listed sales every Thursday, Sunday and bank holiday Monday all year round. The live version adds that the sales fit around race days and events, so a glance at the fixture list saves a wasted trip, and it lets buyers in from 7.30am at £3 until 10am and £2 after, with under-12s free. Neither version says a word about books, which leaves them to the luck of each pitch.

Library book sales

Community library book sale

Stokesley Community Library

Town Close, North Rd, Stokesley TS9 5DH

Stokesley, a North Yorkshire market town 7.4 miles south-south-east of Middlesbrough, keeps a charity-run community library on North Road that sells donated books for what its website calls a small contribution. Good-quality novels and non-fiction for grown-ups and children go on display with complete jigsaws, and the money from each sale goes to keeping the library running. Its Facebook page was advertising an author talk for 3 October 2026 and a film night a week later, and the website's timetable shuts the doors on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Hours: Library hours: Mon–Tue 9:30am–5pm, Thu 9:30am–5pm, Fri 9:30am–4pm, Sat 9:30am–1pmWebsite

Local sourcing tips

  • Saltburn-by-the-Sea, ten miles east along the coast, rewards the extra stretch. Saltburn Vintage Rooms on Diamond Street describes its thirty-plus traders as selling antiquarian and second-hand books among the antiques, and Rose & Brown's vintage fair, which lists books on its stalls, comes back to the Community & Arts Association hall on Saturday 17 October 2026. A few miles further east, Read and Rabbit sells donated second-hand books on the High Street in Loftus, posting its opening days each week on Facebook.
  • Stockton's town centre has two names worth knowing before you go. The Flea Market off Finkle Street opens Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, but its September 2026 posts list vinyl, CDs, stamps, coins and collectables rather than books, and DRAKE, barely 70 yards away on Silver Street, has sold new books since 2015, so it's the place for a fresh copy, not a bargain. Out on Ross Road, about 2.5 miles west of Middlesbrough, Daisy Chain's charity megastore promoted its book section in a Facebook video on 17 September 2026 as packed with vintage finds, with a couch for trying a chapter before the till.
  • Teesside Hospice shut its Ingleby Barwick shop on Thursday 24 September 2026 and its Redcar shop the following day, blaming a downturn in sales, so ignore older listings for either. The charity's announcement pointed shoppers to its other shops, among them a superstore on Portrack Lane in Stockton. Farplace Animal Rescue's Redcar charity shop has also changed address, announcing on Facebook on 13 March 2025 its move to 1-4 Pearl House on the High Street.
  • If you're heading to the Yarm fair, Oxfam's shop at 75 High Street is about 370 yards from the school. Books appear on Oxfam's list of what that branch takes as donations, and a VisitYarm post from July 2025 had it opening on Sundays, so it can share the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Middlesbrough?

Start at the Teesside Reuse Shop at Haverton Hill, where books rank among the best sellers and SUEZ describes the prices as affordable. Stokesley's community library asks only a small contribution for its donated books, and every purchase at the bookshop inside Ormesby Hall goes towards the Trust and the upkeep of the house. For volume over value, try the car boots: North Ormesby on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Sedgefield from 7.30am on Thursdays and Sundays, Redcar Racecourse on Sunday afternoons.

Where do I sell used books in Middlesbrough?

Online does the heavy lifting: Vinted, Amazon.co.uk, Facebook Marketplace and eBay.co.uk for titles worth listing one by one, and Ziffit, which trades under the World of Books name, for a quick bulk quote. Which books deserve that effort is the question BiblioScan answers, since one photo of the shelf has the app setting an estimated resale value beside every spine it recognises. Whatever's left makes a good donation: Ormesby Hall takes good-quality books by arrangement over email, Needful Things accepts them in Hartlepool, and Stokesley's library welcomes fiction, non-fiction and complete jigsaws.

Which day is best for book hunting in Middlesbrough?

No single day wins outright. Tuesdays and Saturdays add North Ormesby's market and car boot to Needful Things in Hartlepool, the Reuse Shop and Stokesley's library (its Saturday ends at 1pm), while Thursday trades the market for Sedgefield's car boot. Sunday belongs to the car boots, Sedgefield early and Redcar Racecourse after 1pm, plus Yarm's PBFA fair on 8 November 2026, though Needful Things and the Stokesley library stay shut. Wednesday is the thinnest day, with Stokesley's library closed and the house at Ormesby Hall shut too until 22 December 2026, bar one week in late October.

Are there any used book fairs in Middlesbrough?

Mark Sunday 8 November 2026 in the diary for the PBFA's Yarm-on-Tees fair, at Yarm School's Princess Alexandra Auditorium, where the stands carry books and maps alongside other printed matter, for a £1 entry. Closer to vintage than antiquarian, the Rose & Brown fair at Saltburn on 17 October 2026 includes books among its stalls of 1920s to 1980s goods.
