That same post sets out the till: cash and checks accepted, credit cards only on purchases of $5 or more, and all proceeds going back to the library, with donations of a box or a bag crossing the same counter and anything larger arranged on 608-266-4875. Treat the schedule with care, because the Friends publish a grid that shuts on Sundays and closes fifteen minutes ahead of the building while the library page for Central says the room keeps every hour the building keeps, so no times are listed here.

Todd Henderson moved the business in here in April 2025 and the Cap Times went through it that June: roughly 4,000 volumes on the floor, shelved by genre and by publisher, whole runs of Ballantine Adult Fantasy and Vintage Crime/Black Lizard, bins of dollar paperbacks, and a case holding first editions of The Feminine Mystique and a rare-cover Ubik. His motto is old books, weird books, good books, and horror, science fiction, philosophy and the occult are where the depth sits. Three channels publish three grids, so the field below follows the shop's own site, which posts 11am to 6pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays; its Instagram profile adds a Friday from 11am to 5pm, the Cap Times had both days running to 7pm in June 2025, and Henderson told the paper that an open sandwich board out front means he is inside and you can walk in.

Trans-owned, trading since 1975, and the shop Destination Madison opened its bookstore guide with on February 11, 2026. The secondhand side is not an afterthought: Publishers Weekly announced in 2011 that Avol's Books, a thirty-one-year-old dealer in used and out-of-print rarities, was to merge into this business effective August 1, 2012, and the store's own Bookshop.org front still describes it as specializing in new and used across every genre. The weight falls on women's studies, LGBTQ+ fiction and nonfiction, children's and young adult titles, with counter space handed to local artists and zine makers. Two pages on the store's own site disagree about closing time, six in the evening on the hours page against seven in the footer, so the grid is left out here.

The Cap Times covered the move on July 17, 2026: the shop closed on Hamilton Street and reopened across the Capitol Square in what had been the Hook & Fade golf simulator lounge, at roughly twice the floor area. Google reviews carried on this branch's own hpb.com listing run from February to June 2026 and put records and games on the floor beside the shelves; the May 2026 one says outright that the counter pays for used books, DVDs, music and Legos. Chain policy is cash, handed over in person, and a government-issued photo ID has to come out at the register; no quote is given from images or an emailed inventory, and the seller waits in the store while the pile is graded. That listing was also pushing the Labor Day discount the whole chain runs, topping out at 20%, over the holiday weekend of September 5 through 7 in 2026.

Same daily grid and the same buy counter, which makes it the natural drop for whatever a run through the other stores leaves you holding, though electronics are not accepted at every store in the chain, by its own note. Check before you drive out, because that floor is shut: the library site carries a banner reading Lower Level Closed Aug-Dec 2026 for maintenance, the Leader-Independent reported on July 26, 2026 that the HVAC work starts August 10 and may last into December with the upper floor expected to stay open, and the library board minutes approved on January 20, 2026 record that the lower level will be inaccessible to the public past the elevator. When the room is trading, cash and checks go to the circulation desk one floor up while card payments run through a QR code down in the shop. The group announced on its Facebook page in September 2025 that it was reviving its annual book sale for October 11 and 12 of that year, after a six-year gap.
