Kansas City, Missouri sells its secondhand books on both sides of a state line that runs through the middle of the metro. Prospero's has occupied an 1890 building on West 39th Street, all three floors of it, since 1997; Steel's, up in the Northland, moved in May 2026 into a room more than twice the size of its old one and carries tens of thousands of hard-to-find titles. After those two the trail crosses either the river or the county line. Seven of the fifteen stops sit in Wyandotte or Johnson County, Kansas — Kansas City, Kansas, Mission, Overland Park twice, Lenexa, and Olathe twice — with the town spelled out at the top of each write-up.

Plan the trip around the buy counters, because two of them publish numbers. The Book Club in Mission pays 40 percent of its own resale price in store credit or 25 percent in cash, takes one box or tote at a time, and gives itself seven to fourteen days to answer. The Kansas City Star photographed the place on June 23, 2026 and reported the move into Suite C the previous May, out of the smaller room at 7311 N Oak Trafficway the family had worked for six and a half years. About 70 percent of the stock sits under $20, paperbacks running $5 to $10 and hardbacks $8 to $15, and an employee named vintage science fiction as the section pulling twenty-somethings through the door. One warning: the steelsbooks.com domain was answering with a server error when tried in September 2026, so social media is the only live channel.
