Where to buy used books in Fort Wayne

Updated 10/21/2026

Fort Wayne, Indiana spreads its secondhand stock across downtown, the north side and the west side, with a single outlier east along the Maumee in New Haven. Downtown, the Allen County Public Library's Main Library on Library Plaza stands 0.3 miles southwest of the square, and Hyde Brothers Booksellers holds the Wells Street Corridor 0.7 miles north, just across the St. Marys River. The north side is the second cluster: Half Price Books on East Coliseum Boulevard and the Summit Comics & Games unit inside Glenbrook Square are 0.4 miles apart and 2.5 to 2.8 miles out, with The Rcade 1.5 miles northeast on East State Boulevard. Summit's other store holds the west side at Jefferson Pointe, 3.3 miles out, and Story Haven, opened in October 2025, sits on Broadway in New Haven, 6.3 miles east.

Before packing a trunk, check each counter's own rules. Hyde Brothers publishes a long wanted list and turns away anything below very good condition; Half Price Books runs a Buy Counter on the chain's standard terms; the Friends' shelves in the library sell used copies for as little as a quarter. Story Haven stocks used and salvaged books; its pages say nothing about buying them in, so count on spending money there rather than raising it.

Two things will throw off an older Fort Wayne list. Summit left its previous Glenbrook Square unit in spring 2025, announcing on March 13 that it would reopen from May 1 in the former Daily Thread space beside Victoria's Secret. And the North Anthony bookstore that some online listings tag with used books, Sunbound Books, sells new titles. The Local FW's profile of owner Liz Kelpin even has her heading to Hyde Brothers when she wants rare and used copies.

Hyde Brothers Booksellers

1428 Wells St, Fort Wayne, IN 46808

Two floors on Wells Street between 3rd and 4th, 0.7 miles north of Citizens Square, where the shop counts more than 150,000 titles, admits a fondness for the odd and obscure, and keeps resident cats among the stacks. Visit Fort Wayne's Wells Street Corridor guide, last updated in July 2026, sends readers there for exactly that: two stories of books and cats to pet. The family behind it is named on its own history page, which explains that Tasha Bushnell, a bookseller there since 1999, bought the store with her husband Sean in December 2021 and that he and their children carried on after her death in September 2022. A free Last Thursday reading series brings at least two local writers to the shop at 7pm on the final Thursday of each month.

Half Price Books

533 E Coliseum Blvd, Fort Wayne, IN 46805

The chain's Fort Wayne branch faces East Coliseum Boulevard, 2.8 miles north of downtown and a short hop from Glenbrook Square, and its own store page titles it a used bookstore. That page was promoting a local-author signing for Saturday, October 24, 2026, with the writers selling their own books while copies last. Like every regular HPB, it purchases books, recorded music and certain electronics over the Buy Counter, a service the company withholds from its outlet stores. Evenings are the easy part here: the doors don't close before 8pm except on Sundays.

Friends of the Allen County Public Library Book Sale

Main Library, 900 Library Plaza, Fort Wayne, IN 46802

The Friends group, active since 1981, runs a standing book sale inside every Allen County Public Library building, the Main Library downtown included, with used copies starting at 25 cents. That offer appears verbatim on the Friends page as archived on August 14, 2026. No one-off sale appears on the library's event calendar between October 2025 and December 2026, so the permanent shelves are the whole program. Downtown is the branch to choose for a Sunday, since every other ACPL location stays shut that day while Main opens at noon.

Story Haven

514 Broadway St, New Haven, IN 46774

Over in New Haven, on the downtown stretch of Broadway 6.3 miles from Citizens Square, a shop founded by local resident Jill McCray Starbuck that specializes in used and salvaged books and ties that choice to sustainability and less waste. The community page Positive Movement New Haven Media announced the grand opening for Saturday, October 25, 2025, describing a store that recycles books and sells affordable reading material. Its own Facebook feed kept announcing new stock in early October 2026, historical fiction on the 3rd and romance the day before. Its online catalog sorts stock into sections such as banned books, children's, cookbooks, fantasy, graphic novels, Harlequin, history and horror, and the week starts late, on Wednesday.

Comic shop with back issues

Summit Comics & Games

Glenbrook Square, 4201 Coldwater Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46805

A comic and game shop in Glenbrook Square on the north side, 2.5 miles from Citizens Square, which moved into the mall's former Daily Thread unit next to Victoria's Secret from May 1, 2025, with the Red Robin entrance as the closest door. The draw for a book scout is the back-issue bins, which Summit said on August 23, 2026 it had just refilled at this store; the company account showed more new additions on October 11, among them Carnage, Red Goblin and Amazing Spider-Man. Summit also runs a second shop out west near Jefferson Pointe. The website gives only one weekly schedule without saying which branch it covers, so check before driving out for an evening.

Comic shop with back issues

Summit Comics & Games (Jefferson Pointe)

4240 W Jefferson Blvd, Suite M-8, Fort Wayne, IN 46804

Summit's west-side store sits in Suite M-8 at 4240 West Jefferson Boulevard by Jefferson Pointe, 3.3 miles west of downtown; the company listed that suite for a Riftbound evening it hosted on Monday, July 27, 2026. A Facebook update on September 1, 2025 announced fresh back issues in the bins at this location. Activity carried on into the fall, with Instagram posts calling players to Jefferson Pointe for prerelease events on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of September 2026 and a two-player-team tournament on October 5.

Comics, graded and back issues

The Rcade Comics

1245 E State Blvd, Fort Wayne, IN 46805

On East State Boulevard, 1.5 miles northeast of Citizens Square, a comic and collectibles shop whose own site says it carries new, graded and back-issue comics alongside Funko figures, trading cards and board and miniature games. An Instagram post from August 23, 2026 urged anyone setting up a pull list to dig through the back issues while in the store. Wednesday is the early day, with doors opening at 9:30am, and Monday is the only day it stays shut.

Local sourcing tips

  • Book hunting in local thrift stores is pure luck, since the big operators say little about paper. Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana runs eight shops across the region, with Brooklyn Avenue, West Jefferson and East State among the city ones, and its network-wide return policy names books among the items it will not refund, which shows they are sold without telling you what any one branch holds. Renew by Blue Jacket in the Georgetown Shopping Center and the Franciscan Center Family Thrift stores both list books among the donations they take in, yet neither describes what reaches the sales floor, so phone ahead before building a route around them.
  • Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation runs a Children's Book Swap & Sale at the Community Center on West Main Street, 0.3 miles from Citizens Square. The 2026 calendar carried it from Tuesday, March 31 through Thursday, April 2, with copies priced 25 cents up to $1 unless marked, and again on Tuesday, July 14, when youth could trade up to five books and anyone could buy without limit. No later date has been posted, but the department takes donated books, new or gently used, all year at the Community Center.
  • One more comic retailer may matter if you resell graphic novels. Books Comics & Things trades from Maplecrest Road in Georgetown and West Jefferson Boulevard at Time Corners, though its website talks about new-release pull lists and says nothing about older stock.
  • Several Fort Wayne addresses look like book stops and are not. Sunbound Books on North Anthony Boulevard is an independent dealing in new titles, as is Barnes & Noble. Visit Fort Wayne's antiques roundup still credits Finders Keepers on South Calhoun Street with books, in wording unchanged since at least 2024, yet the shop's own fall 2026 posts show only furniture. Olde Church Shoppes in Leo-Cedarville, which Visit Fort Wayne credits with books, stands 12 miles northeast, too far out for a loop that starts downtown.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Fort Wayne?

Begin at a library branch: the Friends of the Allen County Public Library keep a sale running in every ACPL building, with used copies priced from a quarter, and the Main Library downtown stays open until 9pm from Monday to Thursday. Children's titles get the same quarter floor at the Parks and Recreation swap on West Main, which capped most prices at $1 during its spring 2026 run. Among the shops, Story Haven in New Haven sets out its stall as affordable reading from recycled stock, the HPB on Coliseum is the chain option, and Hyde Brothers is where you go for depth and older editions.

Where do I sell used books in Fort Wayne?

Hyde Brothers on Wells Street is the place to try first with anything unusual. Its Books Wanted page buys only copies in at least very good condition and spells out its appetite: children's series such as Oz and Nancy Drew, Fort Wayne and Allen County histories, school yearbooks and church histories, Indiana authors from Riley to Vonnegut, pulps and pre-1960 paperbacks. Half Price Books' Coliseum Boulevard store makes walk-in offers at its Buy Counter. Sort the pile at home first: a single BiblioScan picture of the bookcase prices each spine it can identify at its secondhand value, and pull out whatever deserves an online listing of your own before the trade-in bag goes in the car.

Which day is best for book hunting in Fort Wayne?

Wednesday through Saturday, when every stop with posted hours is unlocked. Story Haven in New Haven is dark from Sunday to Tuesday and stays open until 7pm on Wednesdays, while the Main Library runs late from Monday to Thursday and closes at six on Friday and Saturday. Sunday narrows the field to Half Price Books, Hyde Brothers from 1pm, and The Rcade and the Main Library from noon, since the branch libraries do not open that day. Skip Mondays if you can: Story Haven and The Rcade are both shut.

When is the Friends of the Library sale in Fort Wayne?

There is no single weekend to wait for. The library's Friends group sells used books all year from shelves inside each library building, and no separate sale shows up on the library's events listings. The Main Library on Library Plaza is the easiest to reach downtown and the only one open on Sundays.
