Where to buy used books in Dundee

Updated 21/10/2026

Dundee, on the north shore of the Firth of Tay in Scotland, spreads its second-hand book browsing over a few small pockets rather than one bookish street. Nearest to City Square, Oxfam devotes its Reform Street branch to books and music, while out in the West End two Perth Road shops trade practically next door to each other: the Book Attic, a general second-hand bookshop, and Lost Galaxy, a comic shop that opened in 2026 with vintage back issues in its boxes. East of the centre, Cancer Research UK's superstore in Gallagher Retail Park stocks books among everything else, and on Tullideph Road, Barnabas Christian Bookshop mixes second-hand Christian titles with new stock. Where a price comes up, it's in pounds sterling.

Away from those five, the trail goes cold quickly. Broughty Ferry, Lochee and the Fife towns facing the city across the Tay have charity shops of their own, though the Oxfam, Cancer Research UK and Salvation Army branch pages there say nothing specific about books as of 21 October 2026. Just over 9 miles away towards Perth, the Sunday market at Errol Airfield shelters a charity unit with used books among its wares.

The best spots

Second-hand bookshop

The Book Attic

93 Perth Rd, Dundee DD1 4HZ

Out in the West End, roughly 0.8 miles along Perth Road from the City Chambers, the Book Attic calls itself on Instagram Dundee's only independent second-hand bookshop. Its X account was still posting shelf photos on 20 October 2026, four days after announcing that a much-needed restock of Agatha Christie had arrived. Opening is Monday to Saturday, ten till five, "approximately!", according to the Instagram bio, whereas a timetable posted on X in September 2021 shuts at 2pm on Saturdays, so call 01382 339250 before a late Saturday visit.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Dundee

45 Reform St, Dundee DD1 1SL

Barely 200 yards up from the City Chambers, on Reform Street, Oxfam gives a whole branch over to books and music. The branch listing, matching a copy the Wayback Machine took in May 2026, promises many unusual titles across fiction, history, Scottish interest, classics, academic, cookery, crafts and children's books, plus an expanding music corner of vinyl, CDs, cassettes and sheet music. There are no hours online; the branch asks shoppers to phone it on 01382 229681.

Comic shop (new and vintage)

Lost Galaxy

212a Perth Rd, Dundee DD1 4JY

Barely 25 yards from the Book Attic, on the same stretch of Perth Road, this comic shop moved into the former Benjamin Barker premises in 2026, and The Courier reported that January that it would sell vintage comics and graphic novels next to new ones, some of them from the owner's own collection, along with games and Warhammer miniatures. An Instagram reel of 9 May 2026 announced that a backlog of classic back issues, with Fantastic Four, Thor and Hulk among them, was heading into the short boxes. It opens from 11am Tuesday to Saturday and stays open until 5:30pm on Wednesdays, when new comics arrive; on Saturdays the undated website gives 4:30pm as closing time, whereas an Instagram post of 1 June 2026 brought it forward to 4pm.

Second-hand bookshops

Christian bookshop (new and used)

Barnabas Christian Bookshop

The Friary, Tullideph Rd, Dundee DD2 2PN

Inside The Friary on Tullideph Road, some 1.2 miles out from the City Chambers in the Lochee direction, Barnabas is a Christian bookshop run since 2021 by local staff and volunteers, whose Bookshop.org profile says it sells quality second-hand Christian books as well as new ones, with cards and gifts. Its latest publicly visible Facebook post, dated 16 July 2025, announced a summer closure running until 5 August while the team ran an event bookshop at the Refuel festival in Moray, reopening as normal the next day. For current opening times, the shop sends customers to that Facebook page.

Charity shops

Charity superstore (Cancer Research UK)

Cancer Research UK Dundee Superstore

Gallagher Retail Park, 23 E Dock St, Dundee DD1 3JS

In Gallagher Retail Park on East Dock Street, roughly half a mile from the City Chambers out towards the docks, Cancer Research UK opened a superstore of around 7,500 sq ft in 2021. Profiling it on 4 September 2026, the Daily Record counted books in a range taking in clothes, homeware, CDs and DVDs, with second-hand furniture and electrical appliances too, under a headline saying most items cost £5 or less. Among the five, it alone posts Sunday opening.

Local sourcing tips

  • Plenty of other charity shops dot the city and may well have a few paperbacks in, though in October 2026 not one branch page described its books: the Oxfam shops in Lochee and on Brook Street in Broughty Ferry, Cancer Research UK's Broughty Ferry branch and Shelter Scotland's Perth Road shop mention books only in lists of accepted donations, while Perth Road's British Red Cross shows the same stock checklist, "books, CDs and DVDs" included, as its Forfar, Perth and Aberdeen branch pages.
  • At Errol Airfield in Perth and Kinross, 9.3 miles or so to the west-south-west, the Errol Sunday Market has an indoor unit run for Children's Hospices Across Scotland, the CHAS Charity Bookstore 'n' More, selling new and used books alongside games, toys and jigsaws. The market's page for it, worded the same in an April 2026 Wayback capture, says it opens every Sunday.
  • Tayside Re-Users, the reuse charity at South Dudhope Mill on Douglas Street, includes books in the list of goods on its contact page, next to furniture, white goods, bicycles and clothing. That page carries no date, and the charity's Facebook post announcing "We do have books" goes back to November 2019, so it's worth a look only if you're passing.
  • Waterstones on Commercial Street and The Bookhouse on Gray Street in Broughty Ferry are new-book shops. The Dundee Book Festival, held from 19 to 21 June 2026, was a programme of author events, not a book sale.
  • On 1 October 2026 the University of Dundee's School of Life Sciences used Instagram to advertise a charity sale of donated core textbooks at about £5 apiece, aimed mainly at its third- and fourth-year students.
  • As the crow flies, roughly 0.77 miles separate the Perth Road pair from Oxfam on Reform Street, which lies to their east, and from Oxfam it's a little under half a mile to the superstore, heading north-eastwards. Barnabas, up on Tullideph Road, is about 0.8 miles from the Book Attic, heading north-north-west.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Dundee?

For low prices, try the charity superstore Cancer Research UK runs in Gallagher Retail Park, which the Daily Record described in September 2026 as a place where most things go for £5 or less. For a proper book stock rather than a mixed one, the Reform Street Oxfam and the Book Attic are the better bets, though neither posts its prices online.

Where do I sell used books in Dundee?

None of the five shops advertises a buying service online, so ask at the Book Attic's counter before carrying a box across town. Oxfam on Reform Street takes book donations, and Barnabas appealed on Facebook in 2022 and 2023 for donated used books to fund its shop. Before anything leaves the house, stack the books on a shelf, spines to the front, and photograph the lot in BiblioScan: a single picture tags each spine it recognises with what it's likely to fetch, separating the titles to list on eBay, Vinted or Amazon UK from the giveaway pile.

Which charity shops have books in Dundee?

On Reform Street, Oxfam keeps a specialist books-and-music branch, and Cancer Research UK's superstore near the docks had books on sale when the Daily Record visited in September 2026. Other branches in the city centre, Lochee and Broughty Ferry only mention books in their donation lists or in wording shared across their charity.

Are there any used book fairs in Dundee?

As of 21 October 2026 the PBFA calendar has no Dundee or Tayside date. The nearest listed is in Edinburgh, a one-day fair set for 7 November 2026 at Augustine Church Hall, George IV Bridge.

Which day is best for book hunting in Dundee?

Tuesday to Saturday works best, since the Book Attic, Lost Galaxy and the East Dock Street superstore all trade then according to their published hours. Lost Galaxy rests on Sundays and Mondays, while on a Sunday the superstore is the safe stop. Oxfam and Barnabas don't publish their hours online, so a quick call or a look at Facebook first saves a wasted trip.
