Where to buy used books in Derby

Updated 01/10/2026

Derby, the East Midlands city on the River Derwent, has Eagle Books on East Street, a family book business that spent more than twenty years on a stall in the old Eagle Market before taking a shop in 2023. Inside the city you can also try the charity shelves at Oxfam on St Peter's Street and the Salvation Army on Osmaston Road, or a fundraising sale of donated books in Littleover on 7 November 2026. Where a cost appears, read it as pounds sterling.

Past the city boundary you head out into Derbyshire, with one stop over the Staffordshire line. Donated books raise money for the National Trust at Kedleston Hall to the north-west and Calke Abbey to the south, a volunteer bookshop opened at Elvaston Castle in late summer 2026, and Belper has Oxfam's book-and-music branch. To the north, Cromford pairs Scarthin Books with an antiquarian dealer in the old mill yard, Wirksworth adds a new-and-used bookshop and a comic shop, and a field outside Duffield hosts a Thursday car boot. South-west across the county line, St Giles Hospice keeps a bookshop in Burton upon Trent.

Eagle Books

19 East St, Derby DE1 2AU

In the city centre, close to the bus station, Eagle Books took this East Street unit in 2023 when the family moved its stall out of the Eagle Market, and Derbyshire Live reported at the time that it would carry brand-new, second-hand and hard-to-find titles along with puzzle books. The Instagram profile offers part exchange on books, and a Facebook post on 1 September 2026 mentioned piles of boxes and bags still to be priced up. In late November 2025 the shop added Sunday afternoons until Christmas; whether it will do so again in 2026 hasn't been announced.

National Trust second-hand bookshop

Kedleston Hall second-hand bookshop

Kedleston Hall, Kedleston Rd, Quarndon, Derby DE22 5JH

At Kedleston, an Amber Valley parish lying 4.1 miles to Derby's north-west, the Trust fills a stableyard bookshop at the hall with what it calls a wide selection of good-quality books for all ages. A version of the property's shopping page archived on 15 June 2026 adds that volunteers staff it, so it asks visitors to confirm the times when they arrive. Anyone without Trust membership pays the parkland charge, on foot or by bike as much as by car, while dogs on a lead are let into the bookshop.

Scarthin Books

The Promenade, Cromford, Matlock DE4 3QF

In Cromford, a Derbyshire Dales village 14 miles north-north-west of Derby, Scarthin Books looks over the village pond and says it holds about 100,000 new, used and antiquarian books in roughly a dozen rooms on three floors, with a children's room and a vegetarian café. On 1 October 2026 its Facebook page showed off that day's intake of second-hand stock, with Everyman's Library classics, gothic and mythology titles and special editions of Tolkien. The shop buys used books and sheet music by appointment: email pictures of the whole collection or ring 01629 823272, and leave old encyclopedias and Reader's Digest-style sets at home.

Countryside Booksellers

Cromford Mill, Mill Rd, Cromford, Matlock DE4 3RQ

A short stroll east of Scarthin, inside the Cromford Mill complex, Countryside Booksellers is a small antiquarian shop leaning towards local history, natural history and angling. The mill's own shopping page, preserved by the Internet Archive on 3 March 2026, lists it among the tenants as a specialist seller of antiquarian, collectible and general books. On its website the dealer points to long runs of Gilbert White's Selborne, The Compleat Angler, Dickens, Richard Jefferies and W.H. Hudson, and much of the stock is also on AbeBooks.

In Wirksworth, a Derbyshire Dales market town 12.4 miles north-north-west, Hestia Books has moved into 14 Market Place, where The Bookshop used to trade, and the publisher Nick Owen announced on 19 January 2026 that it had begun supplying the newcomer. The shop's Bookshop.org profile describes a curated choice of new titles and second-hand ones together with bookish events, and that January announcement mentioned a monthly book club that had just started. Mondays and Wednesdays are its closed days.

Collectors Corner

33 St John's St, Wirksworth, Matlock DE4 4DS

Two minutes on foot from Hestia, on St John's Street in Wirksworth, Collectors Corner relocated from a small unit in Cromford in the autumn of 2025, Derbyshire Live reported on 16 November 2025, into a former butcher's that its owner believes dates from about 1710. The paper found rows of comics, among them a 50-year-old Captain America at £5, next to graphic novels, paperbacks, action figures and board games. A home-made Cyberman and a Dalek, both built by the owner's father, greet customers as they come in.

Charity shops

Charity shop (Oxfam)

Oxfam Shop Derby

67 St Peter's St, Derby DE1 2AB

Oxfam's St Peter's Street branch, on the main shopping street through the city centre, is a general charity shop rather than one of its dedicated bookshops. Its own page, which read the same when the Wayback Machine stored it on 13 May 2026, says books, music and homewares come in wide variety beside donated clothes, Fairtrade food and greetings cards. Oxfam doesn't publish this shop's hours, so phone 01332 384820 before making a special journey.

Charity shop (Salvation Army)

Salvation Army Derby Central Charity Shop & Café

40-42 Osmaston Rd, Derby DE1 2HU

Near the city-centre end of Osmaston Road, the Salvation Army keeps a charity shop and café in one building. The branch's web page, worded identically when the Internet Archive saved it on 7 March 2026, lists books as an accepted donation, alongside clothing, household items and electrical goods, while furniture is refused. Books sit inside a mixed stock here, and nothing on that page indicates how many titles are out at any one time.

Charity bookshop (Elvaston Castle and Gardens Trust)

Elvaston Estate Second-Hand Bookshop

The Courtyard, Elvaston Castle, Elvaston DE72 3EP

Over in Elvaston, a South Derbyshire parish 3.5 miles east-south-east, the Elvaston Castle and Gardens Trust has turned the Tank Room, a space it describes as dark, damp and cluttered, into a room of donated second-hand books in the Courtyard beside the Estate Office. Its Facebook post of 10 September 2026 said the room had a soft launch over the August bank holiday weekend and was opening on an ad hoc basis until a regular timetable was settled, after a corporate volunteering team had sorted hundreds of donated books by author and genre. A further post on 18 September 2026 asked would-be donors to hold on, since the room already had plenty of books and very little storage.

National Trust second-hand bookshop

Calke Abbey second-hand bookshop

Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derby DE73 7JF

By Ticknall in South Derbyshire, 7.9 miles due south, Calke Abbey has its donated-book room in the stableyard, facing the gift shop at the door of the restaurant. According to the National Trust page as archived on 6 June 2026, the room takes in fiction for every age as well as biography and reference titles from people having a clear-out. The Parkland and Gardens fee is charged to non-members though the car park is free, and a dog on a short lead may come into the bookshop with you.

Oxfam Books & Music

Oxfam Books & Music Belper

65a King St, Belper DE56 1QA

In Belper, an Amber Valley town 7.6 miles north, Oxfam's book and music shop faces the Ritz Cinema on King Street, an easy walk from the bus and railway stations. Its shop page, identical in an Internet Archive capture from 19 May 2026, says the book stock stretches from fiction to specialist subjects, while the music side carries vinyl, CDs, sheet music and small instruments, plus DVDs. Oxfam lists no hours for Belper either, so call 01773 823410 first.

Charity bookshop (St Giles Hospice)

St Giles Hospice Burton upon Trent Bookshop

21 Station St, Burton upon Trent DE14 1AU

In Burton upon Trent, over the county line in East Staffordshire and 10.2 miles south-west, St Giles Hospice keeps a dedicated bookshop on Station Street, apart from its general shop at 35 High Street. The hospice's listing for it, as preserved in a Wayback Machine snapshot of 12 May 2026, gives the phone number 01283 516218 and six-day opening. Sales raise money for the hospice's care of local people living with a terminal illness.

Duffield Car Boot Sale

Windley Meadows, Wirksworth Rd, Duffield DE56 4AQ

On Windley Meadows off Wirksworth Road, in the Amber Valley parish of Windley just outside Duffield and 5.9 miles north-north-west, Treasure Trove Fairs holds a Thursday-morning car boot that its Facebook page bills as running every Thursday, as it did in a post dated 24 September 2026, though it gives no start or end to the season and typically confirms on Facebook, a day ahead, that a sale is going ahead. A notice for Thursday 6 August 2026 let sellers in from 6am at £9 for any vehicle, vans included, and the public from 6:30am at £1 a head. Books never feature in the organiser's posts, so a crate of paperbacks is a bonus rather than a promise.

Littleover fundraising book sale

Littleover Baptist Community Hall, Thornhill Rd, Littleover, Derby DE23 6FZ

Littleover, a suburb lying 1.6 miles west-south-west of Derby's core, hosts fundraising sales of donated books run by the Derby City Liberal Democrats in the Baptist community hall on Thornhill Road; according to their events page, the next is due on Saturday 7 November 2026. That page gives standard prices of £1 (or less) for books, 50p for DVDs and 30p for CDs, with jigsaws, family games and Christmas items on the tables as well. An Internet Archive copy of the page from July 2026 had advertised an earlier Littleover sale for 5 September 2026, and the organisers say the 2027 dates are still being planned.

Local sourcing tips

  • Derby Market Hall has no dedicated book trader among its stallholders, though Vintage & Vinyl on the first floor counts vintage books in its retro stock. Derby Book Festival brings its Autumn Book & Craft Market to the hall on Saturday 7 November 2026, the same day as the Littleover sale, but the line-up is makers, illustrators, authors and small publishers rather than used stock.
  • Ten miles north along the A38, in Amber Valley, the Ripley Giant Saturday Car Boot Sale on the B6013 Chesterfield Road states on its website both a reopening on 14 February 2026 and Saturday mornings from April to November, so ring the numbers it lists in doubtful weather. Its site says nothing about books.
  • The car boot on the Derby Arena car park at Pride Park announces each sale on Facebook the day before instead of publishing a season. The latest notice on its page by 1 October 2026 covered Sunday 6 September 2026, with £10 for any size of vehicle and free parking for buyers, so check for a fresh post before setting off.
  • Cromford and Wirksworth make a single day out: Scarthin Books and Countryside Booksellers are a short walk apart, and Hestia Books and Collectors Corner sit almost side by side about two miles south-south-west of them.
  • Some directories still give a Morledge address for Aidan's Books, whose Instagram profile describes a stall in the Eagle Market; Derbyshire Live reported in March 2023 that the indoor market was about to close for good.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Derby?

The Littleover sale of 7 November 2026 prices books at £1 or less, its organisers say. Donated stock also fills the shelves at the two National Trust houses, the Elvaston volunteer room, both Oxfams and the Salvation Army shop, though Kedleston and Calke charge non-members for the grounds. On Thursday mornings the Duffield car boot asks a pound to get in, and whether books appear is up to that morning's sellers.

Where do I sell used books in Derby?

Scarthin Books in Cromford purchases second-hand stock, sheet music included, but only by appointment after you've emailed photos or phoned, and it warns that cookery, literary criticism, travel guides and children's books are usually well covered. Eagle Books offers part exchange, which suits a regular reader better than a house clearance. To sell for yourself, the usual routes are Vinted and the British sites of eBay and Amazon. BiblioScan needs just one photo of your bookcase to price, at resale, each spine its recognition picks out, which settles what is worth listing yourself and what can head to Oxfam in Belper.

Which day is best for book hunting in Derby?

From Thursday to Saturday, each shop listed with set times is trading, and Thursday also brings the Duffield car boot, which is under way before most shops unlock. Saturday 7 November 2026 puts the Littleover sale and the Market Hall craft market on one day, and Ripley's car boot fills Saturday mornings in its season. On Sunday Eagle Books, the Salvation Army shop and the St Giles bookshop are closed, which leaves Scarthin, Countryside Booksellers, Hestia and Kedleston among those with set hours. Avoid Monday or Wednesday if Wirksworth is on your route, as Hestia is closed both days.

Which charity shops have books in Derby?

In the city, Oxfam on St Peter's Street names books in its own shop description, next to clothing, and the Salvation Army's Osmaston Road listing includes books in what that shop will take. Further out there is Oxfam Books & Music in Belper, the St Giles Hospice bookshop in Burton upon Trent, and the donated-book rooms at Kedleston, Calke and Elvaston Castle.
