Where to buy used books in Bristol

Updated 01/10/2026

Bristol, in South West England, keeps most of its second-hand counters within about two miles of the centre. St Nicholas Market holds Beware of the Leopard and the new-and-vintage comic stall Mike's Comics, Emmaus has a multi-storey charity shop off Stokes Croft, Second Page sits at the top of The Galleries in Broadmead, Dreadnought trades on St George's Road, and Clifton Road, Princess Victoria Street and Cotham Hill carry a community bookshop and two Oxfam bookshops between them, with the Amnesty Bookshop further up Gloucester Road. The rest is a drive away: Thornbury and Dyrham Park in South Gloucestershire, Tyntesfield over the line in North Somerset, and Keynsham and Bath in Bath and North East Somerset. Prices below are in pounds sterling.

Selling here means picking the right door. Dreadnought publishes its terms, typically a third of its expected selling price, and wants photos or a list before you turn up; Second Page states plainly that it buys books besides taking donations. George Bayntun in Bath will look at books brought in for valuation or rebinding, by appointment. The Amnesty, Oxfam, Lions, community and National Trust shops all run on gifts rather than purchases, so a bag of ordinary paperbacks does more good handed over there than hawked from counter to counter.

A few habits save wasted trips. The two St Nicholas Market stalls trade Monday to Saturday, the Clifton car boot runs on Sunday mornings until 8 November 2026, and the two National Trust bookshops sit on estates with their own admission rules. Several shops ask you to ring before a special journey, and a good share of the names on Bristol's round-ups of independent bookshops sell only new stock.

Second-hand bookshops

Second Page

Top Floor, The Galleries, 25 Union St, Bristol BS1 3XE

A second-hand shop on the top floor of The Galleries in Broadmead, an escalator ride up from Waterstones, whose own site counts some 15,000 books, with fiction filed by author and separate runs of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, manga and young adult. Epigram, the University of Bristol student paper, published a guide in September 2025 that singled out an extensive science fiction section, a corner of Celtic folklore, leather sofas and a five-for-£15 fiction deal. Bristol24/7 counted it among the city's second-hand stops in May 2026, and the shop says it accepts donations and buys books too.

Beware of the Leopard Books

St Nicholas Market, St Nicholas St, Bristol BS1 1LJ

Shelves in the covered section of St Nicholas Market that Bristol City Council, which runs the market, calls Bristol's biggest and longest established bookshop, spanning fiction, history, transport and academic subjects with some antiquarian titles and collectables mixed in. Epigram's guide of September 2025 singled out rare hardbacks and English transport history, and warned that, like many traders in the market, it takes cash only. Bristol24/7 filed it under second-hand again in its round-up of May 2026.

Second-hand bookshops

Dreadnought Books

125 St George's Rd, Hotwells, Bristol BS1 5UW

A compact shop in Hotwells, 1.2 miles out to the west-north-west on St George's Road, billing itself as an alternative second-hand bookshop and lists part of its stock on Biblio, AbeBooks and eBay. It buys as well, usually offering a third of the price it expects to get, and its wish list runs from philosophy, archaeology and radical politics to the occult, folklore, street art, hip-hop and chess. Epigram's guide of September 2025 mentioned anthropology, economics and business on the shelves, plus a resident cat, and Bristol24/7 named it among central Bristol's bookshops in May 2026.

Hours: Tue–Sat noon–6pmWebsite
Amnesty Bookshop

The Amnesty Bookshop

103 Gloucester Rd, Bishopston, Bristol BS7 8AT

Amnesty International's second-hand bookshop on the A38 in Bishopston, around two miles north of the centre, which its page says has served the area for 30 years with modern fiction, classics, social sciences, art, poetry, drama, history, foreign-language and children's books, plus CDs, vinyl and sheet music. The shop's Facebook page ran a half-term sale from Saturday 23 May to Saturday 30 May 2026, pricing books for children and teenagers at 50p or less, and announced fresh book finds on 24 August 2026. Books, records, CDs, scores and National Geographic are welcome as donations, but DVDs are no longer taken.

Hours: Mon–Fri 10am–4:30pm, Sat 10:30am–5pmWebsite
Oxfam Bookshop

Oxfam Bookshop Cotham Hill

56 Cotham Hill, Bristol BS6 6JX

Oxfam's bookshop on Cotham Hill, near the University of Bristol, which the charity's shop page says brings in donations from academics, with comics, graphic novels, vinyl, CDs and DVDs on sale beside the books. On 7 July 2026 Oxfam reported that a signed first edition of Virginia Woolf's The Waves, inscribed in October 1931 and noticed here by a volunteer pricing older books, had sold at auction for £25,600. Oxfam's page posts no opening hours and points callers to the shop's own number.

Comic shop

Mike's Comics

Exchange Hall, St Nicholas Market, Corn St, Bristol BS1 1JQ

A comic counter in the Exchange Hall of St Nicholas Market, credited on the council's market page with new and vintage comics and graphic novels, and with giving local creators room to show original art, sell zines and prints and launch books. The two published schedules disagree: the council lists Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 5pm, whereas the shop's own Instagram post of 19 March 2026 says Monday to Saturday from around 11am to 5pm.

Antiquarian bookseller and bindery

George Bayntun

23 Manvers St, Bath BA1 1JW

In Bath, a shade under 11 miles from the centre and right beside Bath Spa station, a bookbinder and bookseller that traces its shop to 1846 and has occupied its Manvers Street building since 1939, by its own history. The second-hand department in the basement covers every subject with a lean towards 19th- and 20th-century literature, while the ground-floor gallery deals in antique prints, many of them views of Bath. The firm posted on 5 June 2026 that it would exhibit at that summer's Bath Book Fair, and it wants an appointment from anyone bringing books for valuation, rebinding or restoration.

Bath Old Books

9c Margaret's Buildings, Bath BA1 2LP

In Bath, about ten miles from the centre, a Margaret's Buildings shop run, by its Facebook page's account, as a partnership of five experienced book dealers, and that the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association lists among its member shops. A post of 12 May 2026 announced fresh stock from the New Naturalist series, some of it scarce, priced below the same titles on AbeBooks UK. Since October 2025 the doors have closed at 4:30pm Monday to Saturday, with Sundays shut, and the dealers suggest phoning on the day before a long trip.

Oxfam Bookshop

Oxfam Bookshop Clifton

26 Princess Victoria St, Clifton, Bristol BS8 4BU

In Clifton Village, Oxfam's Princess Victoria Street bookshop adds vinyl, CDs, DVDs and greetings cards to the shelves, according to the charity's listing. Its Facebook page was appealing for donated books on 22 June 2026, alongside mystery holiday book bags, and was pointing browsers to the sheet music on 3 July 2026. The listing gives no opening times, so phone before a special trip.

Community bookshop

Clifton Community Bookshop

10 Clifton Rd, Bristol BS8 1AF

A volunteer-run community interest company on Clifton Road selling low-cost donated books, whose proceeds all go to The Studio Upstairs, a mental health and art therapy charity, as its own site explains. A volunteer's account of a shift, printed by Bristol24/7 on 24 April 2026, describes boxes of books set out on tables by the door, donations sifted in the stockroom and whatever cannot be kept passed to World of Books. Evenings bring gigs, a tarot club on the first Wednesday of the month and a creative writing group every other Sunday, and the site admits that volunteer rotas can nudge the times either way.

Charity shop (Emmaus)

Emmaus Bristol, Stokes Croft

Backfields House, Upper York St, Bristol BS2 8YQ

Just off Stokes Croft, about 1.3 miles north-north-west of the centre, the homelessness charity Emmaus Bristol runs what it calls its largest charity shop, with furniture below and books and vinyl on the top floor among beds, vintage pieces and clearance lines. On 24 September 2026 its Facebook page appealed for good-quality book donations to keep the shop's bookshelf stocked. Staffing comes from Emmaus companions, people the charity supports, working alongside local volunteers; on Tuesdays the doors open at 11am instead of 10am.

The Trust calls it open daily, and its timetable for 1 October 2026 gave the bookshop 10am to 4:30pm; National Trust members get in free, and non-members pay admission plus £4 a day for parking. Car boot sales & markets

Car boot sale

Clifton Car Boot Sale

The Clanage, Clanage Rd, Bower Ashton, Bristol BS3 2JX

A Sunday car boot on The Clanage at Bower Ashton, two miles west of the centre, whose organiser opened the 2026 season on 22 March and has fixed the last sale of the year for Sunday 8 November. Sellers are let in from 7:30am and buyers from 8:30am, with pitches costing £15 for a car and £20 for a van. The organiser's own posts list books among the clothes, toys, homeware, tools and collectables that come out of the boots.

Car boot sale

Whitchurch Car Boot Sale

Hengrove Park, Bamfield, Bristol BS14 0XA

A Saturday car boot on Hengrove Park in south Bristol, about two miles south of the centre. The organiser's Facebook page said on 29 September 2026 that sales carry on every Saturday until Christmas, after the sale of Saturday 19 September was called off because travellers were camped on the park. Its website lists an 11:30am to 4:30pm sale with free entry for buyers, 50p parking and pitches from £10 a car; neither the page nor the site mentions books.

Local sourcing tips

  • The Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association and the ABA held the Bath Book Fair at Bath Pavilion on 31 July and 1 August 2026, with around 70 dealers in antiquarian, vintage and second-hand books, prints and maps and £2 on the door. The association's 2026 calendar has no fair in Bristol itself, and it runs to December without a Bath date for 2027.
  • Older guides still send book hunters to Bookbarn International at Hallatrow, once billed as England's largest used book shop. The Midsomer Norton Nub News reported in July 2022 that the shop was shutting as that month ended and that the warehouse would be cleared in August, and Companies House records the company as dissolved on 11 February 2026.
  • Plenty of Bristol's independents sell new books only. The Last Bookshop on Park Street prices its stock at £5 or less, but Epigram pointed out in September 2025 that most of it is publishers' overstock rather than second-hand, and Bookhaus, Gloucester Road Books, East Bristol Books, Heron Books, the Haunted Bookshop and Shambles in St Nicholas Market deal in new titles too.
  • As of 1 October 2026, the charities' own shop finders also list two more Bristol bookshops: Oxfam at 1 Queen's Road and the British Heart Foundation's books and music shop at 148 Whiteladies Road. Over in Bath, the same finder shows a books-and-music branch on Lower Borough Walls, and the Guildhall Market's trader list includes Skoobs Book Stall.
  • Washingpool Farm at Easter Compton, in South Gloucestershire, hosts a car boot that its organisers' Facebook group bills for every Sunday and bank holiday Monday, with covered and outdoor hard-standing pitches. The group publishes no season calendar, so check there before setting off.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Bristol?

In Thornbury, the Lions bookshop has suggested donations from January 2026 of £1 a paperback and £1.50 a hardback. The Amnesty Bookshop in Bishopston priced children's and young adult books at 50p or less in February and again from 23 to 30 May 2026, and Epigram's guide of September 2025 reported a five-for-£15 fiction offer at Second Page. Clifton Community Bookshop prices donated stock low and puts boxes outside the door, and the Clifton car boot, held each Sunday through to 8 November 2026, is the place for whatever turns up in a boot.

Where do I sell used books in Bristol?

Dreadnought Books sets out its buying terms on its own site: it usually offers about one third of the price it hopes to sell at, and asks to see pictures or a title list first, with philosophy, radical politics, the occult and folklore high on its wish list. Second Page in The Galleries also buys, and in Bath George Bayntun sees books for valuation by appointment. If you would rather sell online, a single BiblioScan snapshot of the bookcase does the triage: the app identifies the spines it can make out, attaches a likely resale figure to each, and leaves you with a short list that merits an eBay.co.uk or Vinted listing and a longer pile for the Amnesty donation counter. A pitch at the Clifton car boot costs £15 for a car.

Which day is best for book hunting in Bristol?

Saturday covers the most ground: both St Nicholas Market stalls, Dreadnought, Second Page, the Amnesty and Lions bookshops and the Whitchurch car boot all trade, and Bath Old Books is open until 4:30pm. Sunday works as a west-side morning followed by the centre, with the car boot at The Clanage first, then Clifton Community Bookshop and Second Page, while Dreadnought, Emmaus, the Amnesty Bookshop, Bath Old Books and George Bayntun stay shut and the market stalls publish no Sunday hours. Monday drops Dreadnought and Clifton Community Bookshop, though the market, Second Page and the Amnesty Bookshop are open, and Dyrham Park's bookshop is billed by the National Trust as open daily.

Which charity shops have books in Bristol?

The dedicated ones are the Amnesty Bookshop on Gloucester Road and Oxfam's bookshops on Cotham Hill and Princess Victoria Street in Clifton, with a further Oxfam bookshop on Keynsham High Street. Thornbury's Lions Club runs its own bookshop on donations, Emmaus stocks books upstairs in its Stokes Croft shop, Clifton Community Bookshop gives its profits to The Studio Upstairs, and donated books also fill the National Trust's shelves at Dyrham Park and Tyntesfield, where admission applies. The British Heart Foundation books and music shop on Whiteladies Road and Oxfam on Queen's Road appear on their charities' finders as well.
