Bloodroot, the feminist restaurant and bookstore of nearly fifty years at 85 Ferris Street in Black Rock that still sits in map data, closed on December 21, 2025 by CT Insider's account, and the CT Post reported the remaining contents listed for sale in April 2026. A Friends post of September 3, 2026 pitched a summer sale in the same garage, counting over 100,000 items across more than 45 categories, with almost everything under the roof at $5.00 or less and much of it at a dollar or two, plus nearly 500 special items counted together as collectible books, a few maps and a few vintage 1930s posters, all laid out in that identical noon-to-4pm slot. Read the donation policy before loading the trunk: secondhand copies arrive on Thursdays between 1pm and 3pm and no other time, have to be clean hardcover or paperback with no torn pages, water damage or pen marks, and the shop asks for nothing published more than six years ago, classics considered case by case. The CT Post wrote up the launch in May 2023, when two Black Rock women set a soft opening at this address for June 10. Its ticketing pages were selling a book-bedazzling evening for Thursday, September 17, 2026 at 7pm and a $40 book-art workshop with Flourish + Fern the same month.

The category list reaches from special and antiquarian material through boating, military history and a Westport, New York and New England shelf, which is where local-interest money tends to hide. Takings pay wages: the same operator reports over 12,250 hours of paid employment for more than a dozen adults and young adults with disabilities since it opened, and $65,000 given to The Westport Library in fiscal 2025. Its Drew Friedman Art Place hung George Hand Wright for the month of September 2026, with a reception on Wednesday the 16th from 6pm to 7:30pm.

Sixteen miles and change north of Bridgeport, upstairs at the C.H. Booth Library in Newtown, where the Friends keep a year-round store and send the newest and nicest donations straight to its shelves. Their donation guidelines spell out the split, holding back everything else for the 51st Annual Book Sale, which the Friends place at Reed Intermediate School in July 2027 rather than in the library itself, successor to the July 10–14, 2026 edition they thanked shoppers for on their own site. That July event is the one the trade drives for, and the Friends reproduce a Boston Globe verdict putting it among the country's biggest and best-run library sales; the upstairs store is what remains of it in between. Board games, encyclopedias, Time-Life series, dated reference and travel titles, VHS, cassettes, Reader's Digest condensed volumes and magazines are all refused at the donation room door.

Seventeen miles northwest in downtown Bethel, in the red building opposite Caraluzzi's food market and next to the Citgo, parking behind. This is the single counter on this page that gives anything back for a box: a mass market paperback earns 25 percent of what its cover says, anything bigger earns 20 percent, and stock goes back out at half the printed price with credit absorbing half of that, so a $4 pocket paperback brings in a dollar and later costs a dollar plus a dollar of credit. The store accepts paperback fiction of any vintage, refuses nonfiction it calls laughably out of date, will not consider serial romances more than two years old, and restricts hardcovers to children's and young adult titles, roleplaying manuals and classic literature. Its homepage, read in early September 2026, had the queer book club on Boyfriend Material for that month and Nobody Knows My Name for October, and its credit page sends CDs and records along the street to Disc & Dat instead.

Four miles due north in Trumbull Center, a pre-owned bookstore and cafe the Trumbull Public Schools built as a training floor for their ELITE program, which prepares students with developmental disabilities for work. Its own site uses that phrase for itself and credits ReRead Books in Cheshire and the Westport shop already listed here as the models it copied, and there is coffee on sale beside the shelves. The town's budget-hearing minutes of April 9, 2025 record the program running well in its new Elite Academy space and note that the store would like to move more books and coffee to narrow a shortfall the minutes put at $50,000 to $100,000. Counter hours are published as Monday and Tuesday 10am–1pm, Wednesday to Friday 10am–5pm and Saturday 9am–3pm, but the shop runs seasonal grids and closures on Instagram — a post of May 20, 2026 set summer hours from June 8 to July 24, and the profile was still calling itself closed for vacation and new associate training on September 3, 2026 — so call ahead.

Daily timings and featured specials reach the organizer's events page around six weeks beforehand, so confirm before you commit a Friday to it. Material for the sale goes into the gray Book Donation Center in the library's upper parking lot, which receives deliveries 9am–4pm, Monday right through Saturday, and closes on any day the library does.

The library gives those as 9am–8pm Monday through Thursday and 9am–5pm on Friday, with the weekend slots applying from September through May only, which makes a July weekend trip pointless. Larger Friends sales punctuate the year, and Patch reported on April 29, 2026 that the Big Spring Book Sale would occupy the Rotary Room from May 15 to 17 that year, most items at $1 or $2 and unusual ones from $5 up, with pre-loved CDs and vinyl albums added that season. Anything given away is handed in at the front desk, and the Friends decline textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, cassettes, computer games and travel guides over four years old.

Down in Southport, the village end of Fairfield six miles from downtown Bridgeport, where the library hands its Great Lawn, parking lot, auditorium and historic Reading Room over to tents for five days. The 65th edition ran Friday, July 24 to Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and the library counts over 100,000 items across 50-plus categories, from Maritime and Military History to Spies, 'Ologies and Old & Interesting. Dealers should note the line ritual: numbers went out at 2pm on Thursday, July 23 and fixed the running order for the 9am Friday start, though nobody is required to hold one. Pequot says its sales come four times a year — this one, a Black Friday and Saturday event, a midwinter session and a one-day Spring Blowout in April — and the collectibles catalog opens online days ahead of the summer weekend with bids accepted by email.

Between events the association keeps a book sales shelf on the floor, so the drive returns something outside those four days. Donations go into three bins on Godfrey Place, and the list of refusals covers magazines, textbooks over five years old, encyclopedias, VHS, cassettes, condensed books, anything written in and material carrying another library's marks.

What reaches those tables is governed by what the Friends will accept, and the wording is precise — clean, odor-free hardcovers and paperbacks, graphic novels, children's books, DVDs, music CDs and CD audiobooks. Everything moldy or stained is out, along with water damage, torn pages, highlighting, margin notes, cracked paperback spines, magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, VHS, cassettes and records. The same Patch contributor posts three sessions in 2026 at 691 Morehouse Road: a kids' preview at 3:30pm on Friday, October 2 that wants an adult along, the main opening at 9am on Saturday, October 3 with books in every genre plus games, puzzles and DVDs, and a Sunday from noon on October 4 where the listing promises a bag for $10 on that day only. Collecting stops well ahead of the doors: the group took its last donations on Monday, September 21, 2026, and it accepts books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl, games and puzzles in good condition while declining textbooks and magazines.
