Where to buy used books in Blue Mountains

Updated 26/10/2026

Secondhand shelves in the Blue Mountains are strung out along the highway villages rather than gathered in one town. Katoomba has two shops, each less than 700 m from the council chambers on Civic Place, Leura and Wentworth Falls add one each inside 6 km to the east, the social enterprise shop in Lawson is about 11 km out, Blackheath's arcade is 9 km away, north-north-west, and a church hall in Springwood, 22 km east, holds a monthly gold-coin book market. The lower mountains have their own cluster in Glenbrook, which lies 29 km to Katoomba's east-south-east, with two linked shops in one arcade, a Rotary market book stall and a collectors' fair; Lithgow, its own council area at the western edge of the range, adds two shops about as far away, out to the north-north-west. Every distance on this page is a straight line from Katoomba, and prices are in Australian dollars.

Op shops are thin on the list for a reason. Vinnies, Salvos Stores, Cancer Wellness Support and the Rotary-run shop in Blaxland all trade in the mountains, yet no branch page or shop post ties books to one of their Mountains stores in particular, which is why they appear further down, under tips. Megalong Books in Leura and Springwood's The Turning Page stock new titles, so neither counts as a stop here.

Secondhand & antiquarian bookshop

Mr Pickwick's Fine Old Books

84 Katoomba St, Katoomba NSW 2780

On Katoomba Street, under 400 m south-south-west of the council chambers, Mr Pickwick's sells what its Facebook page calls antique and secondhand books in fiction and non-fiction, many of them hard to come by or no longer in print, alongside an eBay store that sells books and antique curios by post. A post on 16 August 2026 pointed visitors to the bookshop in the basement of Macarthurs Arcade at number 84, trading seven days from 10am until 5pm. Through September and October 2026 the page kept showing restored stock heading for the shelves, from handsome books put on display on 25 September to a batch treated on 7 October so they would be gift-ready for Christmas. An older shop website gives number 86, but the 2025 and 2026 posts all use 84.

Social enterprise bookshop

RoseyRavelston Books

1 Badgery Cres, Lawson NSW 2783

In Lawson, about 11 km east of Katoomba, RoseyRavelston is a social enterprise that started in mid 2020 as an online venture, according to its FAQ and the Mid Mountains Local News of 7 June 2024, and later moved into Lyttleton, a heritage-listed 1884 building on Badgery Crescent. The same report says half its profits go to refugee support and advocacy, and the FAQ names secondhand books as its core business, with some new titles, puzzles and gifts on the side. It neither buys books nor offers store credit, relying on donations, and its FAQ, as read on 26 October 2026, asked donors for novels only because of a non-fiction backlog; its Facebook page kept the rarer finds coming that month, posting a two-volume Dali set for $185 on 15 October and a run of Coast to Coast short-story anthologies from 1941 to 1973 on 24 October 2026, and the contact page lists trading from Wednesday to Sunday.

Secondhand bookshop

Blue Dragon Books

Shop C, 11 Ross St, Glenbrook NSW 2773

Down in Glenbrook, the lower-mountains village some 29 km east-south-east of Katoomba, Blue Dragon Books has dealt in secondhand books of every genre since June 2008, plus a few new titles on the Blue Mountains and their history. Its About page counts more than 18,000 books in the shop and explains the buying side: books it wants earn store credit against secondhand purchases, large collections can be paid for in cash depending on what is already in stock, and nothing is bought on Sundays. The shop celebrated its 18th birthday over the June 2026 long weekend with 20% off, and its Facebook post of 7 June 2026 noted that the owners had two shops in the arcade by then.

Rotary market book stall

Glenbrook Rotary Markets book fair

Glenbrook Public School grounds, 10 Ross St, Glenbrook NSW 2773

In Glenbrook, the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains holds its market on the grounds of Glenbrook Public School, with more than 80 stalls, and the club's pages single out a volunteer-run book fair stall of pre-loved books covering many genres. The club's project page says the market runs on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, every month but January, from 8am to 1pm, and in October 2026 the market website gave Saturday 7 November and Saturday 21 November 2026 as the next two dates. Profits go back to schools, charities and community groups in the mountains, the market says, and the grounds are a short walk from Glenbrook station.

New & secondhand bookshop

The Little Lost Bookshop

Shop 10, Ha'penny Lane, 181 Katoomba St, Katoomba NSW 2780

Tucked into Ha'penny Lane, the passage between Katoomba Street and the underground Woolworths car park, this independent Katoomba shop runs a secondhand room next to its original store of new books, board games and a kids' room. Flooding closed the secondhand side, the shop wrote on Facebook on 11 February 2026, and an Instagram post on 6 April 2026 announced that it had reopened that weekend. On 15 August 2026 the Discover the Blue Mountains tourism account described the shelves as packed with new and secondhand reads, fiction and poetry through to manga, nature and spirituality, and the shop's website says most of its secondhand books are uncatalogued and sell for $6 to $10 each in-store. The website showed two clashing sets of opening hours in October 2026, so ring (02) 4778 0100 or check Facebook before making a special trip.

Secondhand bookshop

Roundabout Books

117 Leura Mall, Leura NSW 2780

At the top of Leura Mall in Leura, 1.7 km east of Katoomba and next door to Fool On The Hill Records, Roundabout Books opened in April 2026, as both the Leura Village Association directory and the shop's Facebook announcement of 27 April confirm. It is a tiny room: paperbacks start at $10 according to the shop's 1 October 2026 post, bargain copies go for $5 in the trays outside, and 1970s comics, war comics and vintage science fiction were on the shelves in early September 2026. A post on 24 October 2026 said books it cannot use are passed on to charity and that staff will track down a missing volume of a series on request. Trading runs six days, with Tuesday off, and no times are posted.

SF, fantasy & horror bookshop

Wyrdbooks

Shop 1/32 Station St, Wentworth Falls NSW 2782

In Wentworth Falls, about 6 km east of Katoomba, Wyrdbooks is a specialist in horror, fantasy and science fiction, and its About page calls the pre-loved paperbacks and hardcovers the bread-and-butter of the shop and the section that turns over fastest. Signed and numbered limited editions from presses such as Subterranean, Suntup and Centipede are the second strand of the stock, and the news page reported on 27 July 2026 that a large science fiction collection the shop had bought included a run of French Fleuve Noir Anticipation paperbacks. Its contact form offers a 'Sell a Collection' option, and the home page announced stall 131 at Book Fair Australia on 7–8 November 2026.

Secondhand bookshop (Gleebooks)

Gleebooks Secondhand, Blackheath

Shop 4, Colliers Arcade, Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath NSW 2785

Blackheath, almost 9 km to Katoomba's north-north-west, is home to the mountains branch of the Glebe independent Gleebooks, whose secondhand room is a separate unit, Shop 4, across Colliers Arcade from the new-book shop at Shop 1. The chain's secondhand page promises carefully chosen used fiction and non-fiction, including out-of-print titles, and says Gleebooks Secondhand buys good used books and takes donations through [email protected]. The Blackheath shop's Instagram advertised an Easter book sale in the arcade, tagged #secondhand, on 16 April 2025. Gleebooks' contact page gives the Blackheath branch seven-day hours of 9am to 5pm without listing the secondhand room on its own, and the branch shut early on Sunday 18 October 2026 for new carpet before reopening on the Tuesday.

Rare & collectable books (ANZAAB)

Blue Mountains Books

Shop A, 11 Ross St, Glenbrook NSW 2773

Also in Glenbrook, in Shop A of the Ross Street arcade, Blue Mountains Books is the rare and collectable side of the Blue Dragon business, a name Blue Dragon's website ties to its AbeBooks listings of collectible books. Its entry in the ANZAAB directory of antiquarian booksellers highlights militaria, science fiction, natural history and fantasy. The Blue Mountains Bookshop Trail page said on 19 October 2026 that the shop was taking an eclectic assortment of rare books to the Sydney Rare Book Fair, hosted by the State Library of NSW. According to that ANZAAB entry it trades Wednesday–Friday from 10am until 4pm, Saturdays until 3pm and Sundays until 2pm, leaving Mondays and Tuesdays closed.

New & used bookshop

A Reader's Heaven

184 Mort St, Lithgow NSW 2790

Lithgow belongs to its own council, west of the City of Blue Mountains and about 29 km north-north-west of Katoomba, and A Reader's Heaven on Mort Street describes itself on its Facebook page as somewhere to buy, order or trade new and used titles. Its 31 August 2026 post spelled out the trade side: bring in books you have finished and, if the shop can use them, you may get credit towards your next reads. On 5 September 2026 it announced that, for the first time in its near-30-year history, it would open seven days a week, and later posts showed a first edition printed for British soldiers on the Rhine (21 September) and a shelf of Feist, Eddings and Horus Heresy fantasy (18 October 2026).

Books, RPGs & community space

Lost Souls Bookshop

114 Main St, Lithgow NSW 2790

Also in Lithgow, on Main Street about 250 m from A Reader's Heaven, Lost Souls Bookshop sells secondhand, remainder and new books beside role-playing games and supplies, and its Facebook page presents it as a community space that promotes local artists. Its 2026 posts give a sense of the stock: fourth-edition Shadowrun books in February, a US politics section in the same month and a complete set of Preacher comics in July. The shop said on 11 July 2026 that its in-house Dungeon Master would run two or three Dungeons & Dragons games every Sunday from then on. It publishes no regular opening hours, so send the page a message before you drive over.

Book fairs

Church book market

The Book Shed (CaLM Springwood)

Lower hall, Springwood Uniting Church, Lewin St, Springwood NSW 2777

In Springwood, about 22 km east of Katoomba, the Central and Lower Mountains Uniting Church (CaLM) runs The Book Shed, a monthly secondhand market for books, DVDs and CDs, held in the lower hall of its Springwood church. Its page, as archived on 12 June 2026, promises high-quality books of all genres at gold-coin prices and lounges to settle into with a cuppa, with proceeds split between the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation and the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group. The market takes the weekend that includes the month's first Saturday, Friday 3pm to 6pm and Saturday 2pm to 5pm.

Rare book & comic fair

Blue Mountains Treasures Book & Comic Fair

Glenbrook School of Arts Hall, Great Western Hwy, Glenbrook NSW 2773

Blue Mountains Treasures runs a rare book and comic fair that has moved between halls: its April 2026 edition was in Glenbrook, in the hall beside the cinema on the highway, and the one on 3–4 October 2026 filled the Wentworth Falls School of Arts with dealers, artists and authors selling collectible books, graphic art and fine bindings. The organiser's Instagram profile gives the next dates as 10–11 April 2027, back at the Glenbrook School of Arts Hall. The October 2026 fair kept its doors open 9am–4pm on Saturday 3 October and 10am–3pm on Sunday 4 October, and Wyrdbooks and Blue Mountains Books both announced stalls there.

Local sourcing tips

  • Most of the shops above belong to the Blue Mountains Bookshop Trail, which Wyrdbooks describes as a 13-store circuit from Glenbrook to Lithgow. During the Global Book Crawl on 20–26 April 2026 the trail stamped passports, handed finishers a free Libro.fm audiobook and put them in a draw for ten books, one donated by each participating store.
  • Vinnies has shops in Katoomba, Springwood and Blaxland, but their three branch pages repeat the same society-wide paragraph, and the Salvos Stores pages for Katoomba Street and Springwood carry an identical in-store checklist (books, toys and CDs included), which says little about either shelf. The Cancer Wellness Support op shop in North Katoomba and the Rotary Recycles shop in Blaxland have not posted about books in those stores either, and Anglicare and the Red Cross also have shops along the highway, so treat every op shop up here as a chance stop rather than a planned one.
  • For new titles rather than resale stock, Megalong Books on Leura Mall and Springwood's The Turning Page, which says 2026 marks 43 years of continuous trading, are both independent new-book shops, and Gleebooks keeps its new books in Shop 1 of the Blackheath arcade.
  • Blue Mountains Library ran a Great Book Swap for kids' and YA titles, held at the Springwood Hub on Wednesday 7 October 2026, asking a gold coin donation for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Nothing is sold there, but it is a cheap way to refresh a children's shelf and pass on duplicates.
  • Lithgow is the long leg of any trip. In March 2026 the trail's Facebook page warned of a Great Western Highway detour on the run down from Mount Victoria while insisting that Lithgow's two bookshops, with more than 20,000 books between them, were still trading, so check the road before committing to a full day at the western end.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in the Blue Mountains?

The Book Shed in Springwood sells at gold-coin prices on the first-Saturday weekend of each month, and the Little Lost Bookshop's website puts most of its secondhand stock at $6 to $10. Then there is the book stall at the Glenbrook Rotary Markets, which trades on two Saturdays a month (the 1st and the 3rd), and with the outside trays at Roundabout Books in Leura, where bargain copies were $5 and paperbacks inside started at $10 in posts from September and October 2026. Watch the shops' Facebook pages for sales too: Blue Dragon Books took 20% off secondhand stock for Love Your Bookshop Weekend on 10–11 October 2026, and RoseyRavelston ran an online-only 20% sale on secondhand books that ended on 15 September 2026.

Where do I sell used books in the Blue Mountains?

Blue Dragon Books in Glenbrook gives store credit for books it wants and may pay cash for a large collection, though never on a Sunday; A Reader's Heaven in Lithgow offers credit too, Gleebooks Secondhand purchases quality used titles via [email protected], and Wyrdbooks invites anyone with a fantasy or science fiction collection to get in touch. RoseyRavelston in Lawson does not buy at all. Sorting the keepers is quicker with BiblioScan: stack the books on their sides so the titles show and take a single shot, and the going rate it pins on every spine it can name shows which copies merit your time on Gumtree, Marketplace, Amazon's Australian site or eBay's, and which you would rather hand over for shop credit.

Which day is best for book hunting in the Blue Mountains?

The month's opening Saturday, when the Glenbrook Rotary Markets book stall runs from 8am to 1pm and The Book Shed opens in Springwood from 2pm to 5pm (it also opens on the Friday before, 3pm to 6pm); the third Saturday brings the Rotary stall alone. Saturday suits the shops as well, since every one that posts a timetable is open, with Blue Dragon Books closing at 3pm and A Reader's Heaven and Wyrdbooks at 4pm. Avoid Tuesdays, when Roundabout Books, RoseyRavelston, Wyrdbooks and Blue Mountains Books are all closed. Mr Pickwick's, which posts 10am to 5pm every day, is a safe stop whatever the day.

Are there any used book fairs in the Blue Mountains?

Yes. Blue Mountains Treasures has announced its next rare book and comic fair for 10–11 April 2027 in Glenbrook's School of Arts hall, after editions in Glenbrook in April 2026 and Wentworth Falls in October 2026. The Rotary club in Glenbrook also calls its twice-monthly market stall a book fair, and local dealers travel with their stock: Blue Mountains Books to the State Library for the Sydney Rare Book Fair in October 2026, Wyrdbooks to Book Fair Australia in early November 2026.

Which op shops have books in the Blue Mountains?

Honestly, none that can be pointed to with confidence. Rotary Recycles, Cancer Wellness Support, Vinnies and the Salvos all run op shops between Glenbrook and Lithgow, but their pages either repeat chain-wide wording or leave books out, and none of their posts shows a particular Mountains shelf. For charity books you can count on, go to The Book Shed, the Uniting Church market in Springwood whose proceeds go to two charities, or to the Rotary stall in Glenbrook.
