Ballarat's secondhand book trade splits into a compact CBD cluster and a ring of volunteer outfits on the edges of the city. Everybody Knows Books on Sturt Street, the Mechanics' Institute library a couple of hundred metres west of it and St Andrew's hall on the Dawson Street corner can all be done on foot, with The Known World a short walk east in Bakery Hill, while That Little Bookshop and the railway institute hall sit to the north in Soldiers Hill. Past those, this guide reaches Buninyong to the south, the airport precinct at Mitchell Park to the north-west and Warrenheip on the eastern highway, all of them inside the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Ballarat urban area, and each listing beyond the CBD says in its first words which suburb it is in. Much of the calendar is run by volunteers. Five sellers, commercial and not-for-profit, launched the Ballarat Book Trail in March 2026 and have opened together on chosen weekends ever since, with 3 and 4 October 2026 next on the list, while Uniting, Rotary, Lions and the Mechanics' Institute raise money by selling donated stock. The op shops are a different story: the Salvos, Vinnies and Red Cross outlets around town gave no store-specific evidence of a book section, so none of them has a listing below.

A secondhand shop at number 10 Sturt Street in the CBD, which, as the Ballarat Times reported in May 2023, left Little Bridge Street for these larger premises and reopened here on 3 June that year. Its website counts around 15,000 books on the shelves, sells a sample of the rarer stock online, and states that books are bought on a regular basis, with anything it cannot use handed to charity outlets in town. On Instagram it showed off a freshly purchased stack of Clive Cussler titles on 14 August 2026, and on Facebook it posted adjusted long-weekend trading on 25 September 2026. The same site mentions new titles by local and regional indie authors and a room that doubles as a venue for gigs and book launches.

In Bakery Hill, an easy stroll east of the CBD along historic Main Road, a two-level secondhand and collectable bookshop that opened in 2001 as Buninyong Books and moved into the city under its present name in 2008, according to its About page. Every book is hand-picked, and the site lists local and Western District history, philosophy, natural history, fine literature, antiquarian titles and children's books old and new, shelved among prints, paintings and curios. More than 2,000 titles are listed on AbeBooks and eBay, and the discounted web specials on the home page are honoured in the shop if you mention them at the counter. The Ballarat Book Trail's website counts it among the stops for the trail weekend of 3–4 October 2026.

In Soldiers Hill, at the Doveton and Howitt streets corner some 2 km up from the CBD, a small pre-loved bookshop that does much of its selling on Facebook, posting single titles at $5 to $30 through the day and putting each aside for whoever claims it first in the comments. The owner also stages Bookfests of more than 10,000 secondhand books at $3 each: the August 2026 edition took over a venue on Pleasant Street South in Newington, and a post on 26 September 2026 fixed the next one from the evening of Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026. A 2021 Ballarat Times profile traced the stock to deceased estates and auctions and gave the week as Thursday to Sunday, but a tourism directory says Wednesday to Sunday, so check the Facebook page before a weekday visit.

In the CBD, St Andrew's Church Hall on the corner of Sturt and Dawson streets hosts this fair, organised by Ballarat Central Uniting Church to fund Uniting Ballarat's Breezeway meals for people without a home, with Lifeline also sharing the proceeds. The church's website carries a flyer for a November 2026 edition spread over Saturday 31 October, Sunday 1 November and Monday 2 November, advertising new stock alongside rare and collectable books, plus plants. Earlier in 2026 the fair filled the March long weekend, 7 to 9 March, and returned for a single day on 6 June, when the Ballarat Times reported soft covers at $2, hard covers at $3, gold-coin entry, novels sorted alphabetically and dealers buying for their own shops.
