Athens, Georgia — the University of Georgia town an hour east of Atlanta, not its namesakes in Ohio, Alabama or Texas — puts three of this guide's ten entries on a single road. Baxter Street carries them inside a quarter mile: Walls of Books at number 1091, the Friends' Athens Library Store just inside the county library at 2025, and the fall book sale those same volunteers stage in that building. The St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary thrift store adds a fourth stop 0.4 miles off on West Broad. Downtown contributes one bookshop to this page, Rec Room Books, in a cellar beneath a coffee bar on East Broad, plus the Habitat ReStore over on Barber Street. The remaining four need a car: west along Atlanta Highway to the Goodwill, east to Winterville, then southwest across the county line into Oconee for the Watkinsville branch of Walls of Books and the civic center that hosts the Oconee book sale.

Two facts date an older Athens roundup. Avid Bookshop, trading since October 2011 by its own account, shut its Barber Street storefront on Sunday, April 26, 2026, a week after owner Janet Geddis announced the closure on the shop's social accounts — The Red & Black put that announcement on April 19 — and has kept only the web shop and events at borrowed venues since. Rec Room, which unlocked its door on January 30, 2026, has already outlived its own address online: recroombooks.com serves a Squarespace expiry notice, so Visit Athens and the shop's social accounts hold the live details instead. Late September 2026 is also unusually loaded, with the Athens-Clarke sale running September 23 to 26 and the Oconee one September 24 to 27, which packs two big rooms into a single week.

A cellar under Jittery Joe's coffee on East Broad, steps from the edge of campus, which opened on January 30 and was profiled by The Red & Black on April 17, 2026, when co-owner Ian McCord had been behind the register roughly two months. McCord told the paper the floor splits about evenly between new titles and secondhand ones, the two intermixed on the shelves with a pencil mark the only thing telling them apart, and that many used copies arrive from customers dropping them off for store credit. He also said he had been racing to refill shelves week by week because nearly everything the shop opened with had sold, which means quick turnover and a thin bench on any one subject.

A Baxter Street storefront 2.5 miles west of the center, and a branch of the Gottwals-run Walls of Books group, whose Better Business Bureau file was opened and accredited on March 13, 2025 under chief executive Shane Gottwals and the alternate name Dawg-Eared Bookseller. The terms are published rather than improvised: what you bring is appraised at the counter and returned as a credit slip the chain warns is its sole record, that slip pays at most 50 percent of a used title already in stock, and it is void on special orders and on Melissa & Doug items. College textbooks are handled apart, bought for money as well as credit, and the chain states the credit number will always beat the cash one. A purchase can come back later for half what you paid, in credit, so long as the price sticker still sits on the rear cover — which makes the shop a running account rather than a closed sale.

A retail room inside the county library on Baxter Street, an eighth of a mile from Walls of Books, reopened by the Friends of Athens-Clarke County Library with a grand event on August 23, 2025 after the space had stood empty for several years; the Athens Banner-Herald wrote up its first birthday on August 27, 2026. Prices run between 50 cents and $5 across children's, young adult, graphic novel, fiction, memoir and mystery sections, with a separate vintage shelf beside book-themed gifts, cards, educational toys and local art. Read the grid below with one caveat: the group labels it their summer 2026 schedule, and the same page was still promoting the August 29 anniversary Saturday, so confirm before making a special trip.

Twice annually those same volunteers fill the library building with a stock they number at over 25,000 books, along with CDs, DVDs, vinyl, puzzles, games, graphic novels and one-off vintage editions. The published fall run is Wednesday, September 23, 2026 from noon to 7pm for dues-paying members alone, then open days on Thursday and Friday, closing on Saturday, September 26 with Bag Day — fill a supplied bag for $10. Hardcovers are listed at $2, with hundreds of bargain paperbacks alongside them, so the Saturday rewards volume while the Wednesday rewards choice. Membership costs $15 for students and $25 for one adult, while the $100 patron tier gets a Friends tote filled on the closing day for $5.

Out in Winterville, four and a half miles east of Athens and across Marigold Lane from the town branch library, a 501(c)(3) storefront that Friends of the Winterville Library volunteers staff on their own. The Red & Black called in on October 7, 2025 and found manager Jan Mazzucco, there since the place opened in 2009, taking at least two donations a day: fiction, science fiction, cookbooks, women's studies, history and children's titles, plus CDs, DVDs, puzzles, games and a little vinyl and a few 78s. The City of Winterville publishes the $10 bag sale held every Saturday, and the paper notes that the register here settles in cash or a check, nothing else. The parenthesis in the hours line is the same paper's: on concert Saturdays the store stays open to 7:30pm, dropping back to a 2pm close once the last show of October is played.

Seven miles southwest in Oconee County, on a Watkinsville mailing address that the Census Bureau places beyond the town limits, sits the Baxter Street shop's sister branch — the chain roster hands it, the Athens store and the Commerce branch one shared [email protected] contact. Its own site pitches secondhand ahead of new: fair prices, special orders on request, trade credit for used copies and money for college textbooks, under the slip system and the 50 percent ceiling described above. The Better Business Bureau record opened on the group on March 13, 2025 carries this branch's line, (706) 705-1033, among the eleven numbers it lists for the chain, and the Internet Archive's June 28, 2026 copy of the shop's own site still carried the same suite number, the same line and the same clock. It locks up an hour before the Athens branch does, so it belongs early in a day's route rather than at the end of one.

Barber Street, 0.96 miles from the downtown bookshop, and one of two thrift stores run by Athens Area Habitat for Humanity; the affiliate's donation list names books, LPs and CDs on the roll of what it will accept, next to the appliances and building supplies. Its Upbuilding newsletter of June 17, 2026 recorded that landscaping plants left over from the Southeast Green Conference at the Classic Center earlier that month were sold off at this Barber Street address, which gives a fair idea of what drifts through. Habitat states that both its shops mark goods 25 to 90 percent under retail and keep an identical Tuesday-to-Saturday clock, so the second one, five and a half miles away on Atlanta Highway, is the same errand aimed the other way.

A hospital-owned unit on West Broad Street, worked entirely by St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary volunteers since it opened on April 22, 2008, and a walk of 0.4 miles from both the library shop and Walls of Books. St. Mary's Health Care System marked the store's nineteenth year and $3 million in lifetime sales at an event on May 8, 2026, reporting roughly $1.5 million cleared for the hospital once expenses were paid. Books, DVDs and books on tape appear on the published wanted list beside antiques, art, collectibles, bridal gowns and tools, and the volunteers clean, sort and price every item before it reaches the floor. Note that the store's own page prints the number twice with the digits swapped, as 2156 and as 2165 West Broad; the press release and the map records both settle on 2165.

Six and a half miles west on Atlanta Highway, with Bogart on its mailing label but a point the Census Bureau puts inside Athens-Clarke County, and 0.3 miles along the same highway from Habitat's second ReStore. Goodwill of North Georgia titles the page for this branch West Athens Thrift Store & Donation Center and names books among what the donation side takes in, beside clothing, furniture and computers; the Internet Archive's copy of May 19, 2026 carries that same wording, the same nine-to-eight clock Monday through Saturday and the same 99 Cent Mondays line the chain runs through its Savvy Shoppers club. The operator also states that the whole sales floor is refreshed every 21 days, which is the number worth knowing: a repeat visit inside three weeks meets largely the stock you already turned over.

Eight and a quarter miles southwest of the center, at the Oconee County Civic Center on Hog Mountain Road, a couple of miles west of the Watkinsville town limits, where that county's library volunteers stage the fall half of the two fundraisers they hold each year. Their events page gives September 24 to 27, 2026 for this one and February 25 to 28, 2027 for the winter edition, while the sale page counts over 11,000 volumes, most at $2 or under, junior titles from 50 cents upward, CDs and albums at $1, discs and audiobooks at $2, plus vintage stock, puzzles and free Bibles and dictionaries. Thursday is a members-only preview at $10 an individual or $25 a household, Saturday takes half off at checkout and Sunday is the $10 bag with bags supplied. One line in the Oconee County Tourism Department listing decides whether this stop earns a reseller's morning: scanner use, cell phones included, costs $25 on any day of the sale.

Walls of Books and the store inside the library are an eighth of a mile apart, the hospital auxiliary lies 0.4 miles from either, and the loop is maybe fifteen minutes of walking. Clocks are the trap: the auxiliary works 11am–3pm, the library shop 10am–3pm and on four days only, so an early afternoon start catches all three where a 4pm arrival catches precisely one. Walls of Books is the outlier that stays lit to 6pm.
Stock moves in the other direction at two names here, and neither hands over cash for general books. The Baxter Street and Watkinsville branches of Walls of Books appraise on the spot and settle in a slip, good for half of a used purchase and dead on special orders and on the Melissa & Doug line; textbooks alone draw a cash offer, always the smaller of the two figures. Rec Room takes copies in for store credit, its owner told The Red & Black in April 2026, which is where much of the secondhand half of that floor comes from. Late September 2026 is the week to clear. A few Athens book names still in the directories no longer sell anything over a counter. Jackson Street Books traded at 260 N Jackson St for three decades until owner Tony Arnold locked the door in the first days of January 2016, as Flagpole and the Athens Banner-Herald both reported at the time, and listing sites keep the address alive. Avid Bookshop gave up its Barber Street floor on April 26, 2026 and kept the web shop. Normal Books, on Prince Avenue in Normaltown, describes itself on its own Facebook page as an all-new store specializing in remainders, which makes it a discount stop rather than a secondhand one.
Do not drive out of the county expecting a chain. Half Price Books shows two Georgia branches on its own state page, in Decatur and at East Cobb in Marietta, 54 and 61 miles from here, and the same pair is all that its nationwide finder files under Georgia. 2nd & Charles shows four Georgia shops — Augusta, Columbus, Kennesaw and Roswell — none of them in Athens, while the next Walls of Books beyond this guide stands at Banks Crossing in Commerce, some 21 miles north and just outside the area covered here.
