Where to buy used books in Amherstburg

Updated 10/16/2026

Amherstburg, Ontario, sits at the mouth of the Detroit River in the southwest corner of Essex County, and this page reaches past the town line into the Town of Essex communities of Harrow, McGregor and Colchester, which lie closer to Amherstburg than to Windsor. The shoreline you see across the water is Michigan, which is another country's book trade. What the area offers a book scout is modest: two non-profit thrift shops, one run by Saint Vincent de Paul in a plaza on Sandwich Street South and the other by volunteers in downtown Harrow, each selling donated books alongside furniture and household goods.

LaSalle, the town between Amherstburg and Windsor, has its library branch and its shops closer to Windsor's centre than to Amherstburg's, so they belong to the Windsor guide, the next stop for anyone after a bookshop's shelves. Book sales do turn up here: the town's library branch held a week-long one in August 2025, and the Marsh Historical Collection has raised money with three secondhand sales since September 2025, the latest over the weekend of April 18 and 19, 2026. Neither had set another date by mid-October 2026, so both sit in the tips with the town's other leads.

Saint Vincent de Paul thrift store

Society Shoppe Amherstburg (Society of Saint Vincent de Paul)

400 Sandwich St S, Amherstburg, ON N9V 3L4

In the shopping plaza at 400 Sandwich Street South, about 600 m south-southwest of the town hall, Saint Vincent de Paul's Windsor-Essex council runs the Amherstburg branch of its Society Shoppe resale stores, one of four on its locations page with two in Windsor and one in Essex Centre. The shelves include books on the society's own word: its Society Shoppe Facebook page posted on October 10, 2026 a book blow-out sale for all four stores from Thursday, October 15 through Saturday, October 17, listing this Sandwich Street address and promising a fresh delivery. Donations are accepted Monday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm, and the society says the goods it collects also go to neighbours in need across Windsor-Essex.

Full Circle Thrift Shop

71 King St W, Harrow, ON N0R 1G0

In Harrow, a community of the Town of Essex about 17 km east-southeast of Amherstburg's town hall, this non-profit shop staffed entirely by volunteers sells donated goods from the corner of King Street West and Victoria Street, in a building 211 Ontario identifies as the former Shep's Restaurant or Langford's Dairy Bar. That 211 Ontario listing, last updated on January 28, 2026, names books among the antiques, collectibles, jewellery, toys and furniture on sale, says no clothing or footwear is carried, and gives opening times of 1pm to 5pm Monday to Wednesday and 9am to 5pm Thursday to Saturday. Its volunteers warned on Facebook on October 6, 2026 that the doors would stay shut over the Thanksgiving weekend, then spent the following days setting up a Christmas pop-up shop, in what its posts call the Tin Shed, to open on Saturday, October 17, so look at its latest posts before making the drive.

Local sourcing tips

  • The Amherstburg branch of Essex County Library, about 160 m from the town hall on Sandwich Street South, put used books from picture books to adult non-fiction on sale for a week in mid-August 2025. The library's events calendar listed no Amherstburg sale for 2026 as of October 16, 2026, while the LaSalle sales it lists, at the Bill Varga branch on Malden Road, are nearer Windsor.
  • The Marsh Historical Collection, the community archive on Richmond Street, held a secondhand book sale on Saturday, September 27, 2025, announced on its Facebook page three days earlier with mystery, fiction, local history and gardening titles, and another at GL Heritage Brewing Co. on Sunday, November 9, 2025. Its March 28, 2026 post brought Books & Brews back to the brewery for Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, where, as the River Town Times reported on April 21, the books carried no price tags and readers were asked to make a donation. No later sale had been posted as of October 16, 2026.
  • Three Amherstburg names that turn up when you look for books won't fill a bag. River Bookshop on Richmond Street sells new books and gifts, Vintage & Vinyl on Murray Street deals in records and vintage items, and The Dusty Loft, out on Concession 5 North, is an antiques and collectibles dealer whose Facebook posts from late September to October 11, 2026 say nothing about books.
  • Essex Centre's Society Shoppe on Talbot Street North took part in the same October 2026 book blow-out, though it's about 25 km from Amherstburg and nearer to Windsor. Kingsville and Leamington lie farther east along Lake Erie, more than 30 km away.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find cheap used books in Amherstburg?

Start at the Society Shoppe on Sandwich Street South, which keeps the longer week of the two, then drive out to Full Circle in Harrow from Thursday on, when its listed hours start in the morning. Whatever turns up on either book shelf came in as a donation, so a second visit a few weeks later can look quite different.

Where do I sell used books in Amherstburg?

Both shops here are stocked with donated goods, so selling means going online, on eBay.ca, Kijiji, AbeBooks, Amazon.ca or Facebook Marketplace. One pass of BiblioScan over the shelf sorts the box quickly, because the app matches each spine it can recognize and returns a resale estimate per book; the handful that clear your bar get listed, and the rest can ride back to the Society Shoppe's drop-off.

When is the big library book sale in Amherstburg?

The last one on record ran from Monday, August 11 through Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Essex County Library branch at 232 Sandwich Street South, according to the library's calendar. That week was posted day by day on the Essex County Library events calendar under the Amherstburg branch's name, which is where to look for the next one.
